Amarant: "The only dependable thing about the future is uncertainty."

Eiko: "I don't wanna be alone anymore..."

Freya: "To be forgotten is worse than death."

Garnet: "Someday I will be Queen, but I will always be myself."

Quina: "I do what I want! You have problem!?"

Steiner: "Having sworn fealty, must I live my life in servitude?"

Vivi: "How do you prove that you exist...? Maybe we don't exist...."

Zidane: "You don't need a reason to help people."

Which one of these quotes do you think captures the essence of the character the most? Or which one of these quotes do you think describes the character the best?

I'm finding it difficult to choose who I think has the quote with the best representation. Many of them do justice to the character, but if I had to chose one above all, I'd have to say Quina's. I find this quote to be the most straight forward of all the others. Just like Quina's character, it's very in-your-face with a humorous twist. It also reveals that Quina has no shame, something which she/he consistently proved throughout the game. While the quote could be misconstrued as "fighting words", I never took it like that at all. I believe what Quina is really trying to show is that she/he doesn't judge others, so don't judge her/him.

Personally, it's not my favorite quote though. My favorite has always been Freya's. It's so true.

I actually agree with you on that one. Her/his quote fits her character completely. I also like Steiner's a lot, even though he's very loyal to the Queen and Garnet, he still questions his own identity and life. The boat scene from Treno comes to mind when I read his quote.

I liked Vivi's it shows he is unsure whether he exists or not and shows how little he knows about his origins.

Steiners easily. It shows he's not some idiot who just follows orders blindly. he questions his future and himself. Freya's is a very close second.

I like the threads your making Zulu :) Keep it up.

The one quote that bothers me the most is Garnet's. It annoys me, mainly because the title as a princess IS all is she has known throughout her entire life.

"Someday I will be Queen, but I will always be myself."

Her real Self? But she's never known anything other than being a princess, so this quote is slightly out of place if you ask me.

Her's has always been my least favorite as well. I also think it really fails to capture anything about her actual personality. I felt Garnet was an extremely observant person who had the ability to break away from her upbringing and eventually make her own decisions. While her quote tries to portray that, I believe SE could've come up with a much better way of saying it.

I've never really liked Armarant's either, but that might just be because I couldn't connect with his character at all.

Amarant's quote sounds like something Doctor Tot would say.

I guess since amarant doesn't really say much they coudn't come up with anything good.

That's the thing, though. At certain points she questions whether or not it was truly her place to be a princess, or a queen. Plus she goes through the game and finds out that she has a whole heritage behind her that she never knew or understood until she found Madain Sari, and that's part of "who she really is," too. She said that all her life she was afriad of using the powers that she knew she had but didn't understand why, and it was only through the desire to help other people and stop her mother, and understanding how and where she came from, that she finally learned not to be afraid ofher natural summon magic. Plus she learned not to be such a prude and to follow her heart, and to be more sure of herself, all of which I think is part of "being herself," too.

She accepted her responsibility to become the queen, but all of those lessons that she learned about herself and how to handle herself as she became the queen had to be part of it. So I actually never thought it was that misplaced. ^^

I'm surprised no one said Zidane's "You don't need a reason to help people."

I think his was the most obvious and easiest to point out throughout the game. From the beginning, he goes with Garnet not just because he had this huge crush on her (which I'm sure made his decision a lot easier) but because it was the right thing to do. He helped people like Vivi and Eiko just because it was in his nature to take people under his wing. He helped Amarant because he just couldn't walk away from someone in trouble. And in the end...? That's the most obvious thing of all. He went back to save Kuja just because it was the right thing to do. He didn't have a reason to go other than that. I don't know why this was changed in the English version, but in the Japanese version, when Kuja asks Zidane why he came back, Zidane tells him, "Do I need a reason to help someone?" So I think Zidane's summed up his character the most.

Oh, I love Zidane's too and I think it's a great fit for him. I just thought that Quina's was the bluntest.

I also think that Eiko's really works with her character. After all, she is just a young child who has been scraping by on her own for years with no real human interaction. Although she had the moogles to keep her company, it clearly wasn't what she needed. This is shown when she automatically clings to Zidane, mistaking her admiration for love. A child that has been alone for so many years is very likely to develop strong feelings for the first person that gives them the time of day. "I don't want to be alone anymore..." is a very simple, clear-cut representation of what drives Eiko's character.

I liked Amarant's because it's, you know, true. It's not deep or with too much to think about. It's not my favourite and I actually disliked the character but I like the quote for its simplicity.

I've actually changed my mind concerning Freya's quote. I think it's trying way too hard to somehow describe her desperation. I get that she's destroyed because of Sir. Fratley, but since their story never really reveals itself, her quote becomes irrelevant to some extend. In the end you see them get together, but the game never reveals how or why they do. I don't know, I guess I still feel a little blas because I never got to know their entire story.

Nah, maybe I'm the only one who feels this way.

I actually think Freya's is the Most deep quote out of them all. Humans seek immortality through History we each seek to leave our mark on the world through actions Kids and other ways. To be forgotten is worse then death because it is like you never exisited.
But I do agree on that it lacks the power it could have had behind it but it is not powerless. We know freya has gone to Heck and Back for Fraterly to find him after all that and he doesn't even know you is beyond Hard it would be destructive to you. While with out the backstory it losses much of the Pointed loss and hurt that quote defiently contains we to understand Freya's pain don't need it we just need to see how it affected her to know it.

I'd say Freya too. Pretty much her whole world is centred on Sir Fratley, she's been searching for him for years-that is her life. When she finds out he doesn't remember her, life is just not worth living anymore.

Amarant was one of my favorite characters, and I think his quote fits him. In the begining he was a guard in Treno then Zidane came and took that from him and ever since he was a bounty hunter looking to get Zidane. In the end he joined the group because he was fascinated by him and wanted to know what made him tick, why he did what he did, and towards the end of the game on Terra, he thanked Zidane for showing him there was more to life. So, "the only dependable thing about the future is uncertainty" fits him well imo, he went from hating and wanting to destroy someone to not neccessarily liking him but to having learned or understood there was more to that person and to life itself thanks to him.

I agree. Her quote has more realism then the rest. I mean, you search for your true love for many many years, then find out he doesn't remember you or the things you've shared, and it shatters your heart to a million pieces. I actually choked up when I saw that scene in-game for the first time. Freya FTW.

Not worth living anymore? If anything Freya resolves to make herself a strong Dragon Knight by A) helping Beatrix guard Alexandria and B) ultimately joining up with Zidane and the gang for the survival of the planet.

I mean, I love her quote, but I don't think it's the best one out of all of them.

I'd say Vivi's quote really embodies his quest in the game. He spends the entire game it seems like trying to find himself and who he is. He doesn't know if he's real or somebody else or some failed monster. His quote definitely shows his struggle and self doubt that seems to be apparent in almost everybody, but Vivi is just one of the only people to show it strongly on the outside and discuss it.

For the phrases, Freya's is by far the best. As for the emotions, Steiner's "Dilemma" is a solid contender, followed closely by Amarant's "Arrogance".

I think I get overly philosophical when i really need to sleep...

With Amarant, what he's saying is that you can't completely decide your future. There are other forces at work that no one ever sees.

Freya knows and accepts that it is hard to lose someone but when you find them again and they don't remember, sometimes it feels like that person is dead. It just feels so much worse.

With Garnet, I realized that no matter what role you have in life, no one can change who you are as a person. My mother gave me practically the same advice and she's never played the game.

Steiner seems to be questioning his decision on what he swore to do. He makes up for it in the game by constently making sure that Garnet has someone close to a father figure. He also becomes the father figure for Vivi.

Vivi's seemed to hit the nail on the head for me at the moment. Where do souls come from? Do they get recycled? Things like that. Maybe this is something that is all a big dream.

Even before the game was out, I was ready to live Zidane's quote. I give my hair to Locks of Love all because of a memory. That's my only reason adn even then, it's not very logical. You help people because you want to, not because you need to.

I didn't really get anything out of Eiko's or Quina's quotes.
