I just finished reading IGN's stance on the year of 2006, so I'd like to throw out this:

What was the top game(s) to hit the shelves this year? What was the biggest disappointment/surprise? What was the biggest news of the year?

Basically, just give your final synopsis of how the gaming industry did this year.

Probably my favorite game to come out this year had to be FFXII or Gears of War. I don't pay attention to game news enough to know of any surprises or disappointments.

definitly Gears of War and Metal Gear Subsistence
Viva Pinata is also great and to me Rare's first decent outting that reaches back to their quality on the Ninty consoles even tho it lacks a decent online mode and is goin for fucking retarded downloads sofar
and i just bought Disgaea 2 today so i'm guessing that will end up on my favo list aswell as i loved the first one

and do have to mention i'm especially content with my 360 sofar, tought i would regret it after a week but its allready the system i play the most on

dissapointments.. maybe Wii and its crappy online system
especially seeing games with enormous potential getting the low budget treatment and just ignore the entire possibility of a great online expierence(Excitetruck)

hell 2006 has been a crappy years for racegames in general

Biggest disappointment - World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade being delayed until January 16th 2007.

One could argue that the PS3 launch was a large disappointment. There were issues with the console itself, and the launch library was pitifully small. Then again, quite a few people saw that coming.

The 360's growing marketshare in markets not called the USA is a largish surprise, but not entirely unforseeable, considering the work done with Xbox Live and the fact that M$ had several months up on Ninty and Sony.

All in all, the three "new" systems are probably what will wind up defining 2006, but only in hindsight.

This isn't me just taking another stab at Sony, but I really think the biggest news for this year was all the trouble they had with the PS3. They really kicked themselves in the nuts, hard, for it's launch. And we'll see if the sting of the kick wears off in a few months, or has a long lingering effect.

Ninty renaming the Revolution was pretty big news, too.

Wii is so much cuter anyway.

If they hadn't changed their name I may have been able to get one without my brother making fun of me but since he will I just won't bother man.

I like it too. Revolution seemed so pretentious to me.

At least they know no one can sue them for copyright ifringement. Lol Sony got sued for dual shock controllers, like how desperate can you be? If copyright infringement lived in the artist world, oh man would some people be so rich.

I can honestly say I now prefer the name Wii to Revolution.

Maybe you like Wii better because you hear it so much more often. Its like how you get used to names, and if you add a random last name to your surname, it sounds kind of weird because your not used to it yet.

That was probably the thing I was paying most attention to mself, since, well... I'm in the country that's not the US that you're probably talking about. XD And it was quite exciting and pretty big news to see the Xbox getting some attention garnered over in this little island nation.

Blue Dragon was definitely one of the most anticipated games to hit the shelves here this year. At least on this side of the pond.

Biggest news was of course the relese of the PS3 and Wii, and even the Nintendo DS Lite. :P Biggest surprise was actually Ookami, rather than Blue Dragon. I had high expectations for BD when it came out (and no disappointment whatsoever), but Ookami was the one that was completely and unexpectedly brilliant.

I though Ookami was a big surprise, too, but I didn't have the stones to say it first, LoL.

I have a second one just sitting in my closet. It's my brother's birthday gift, but I'll totally sell it to you.

Actually, both Sony and Microsoft were sued...Microsoft got out of it by buying some shares in the plaintiff company and Sony tried to go head-to-head in court and lost miserably ^_^

What issue arose from the dual shock or w/e controller that would get them sued?

nintendo were sued too iirc. it was a stupid patent issue, some guys patented the idea first without ever implementing it and the lazy cunts now make money off the backs of people who actually work, yay. =D

Man I'm gonna patent every single idea I can think of now, and in like 20 years time, oh what's that? Some homeless orphan who's hungry has created something resembling one of my ideas? What's that? Sue! Sue! Sue! :) Sue is also a name.

i don't think you finished your setence there.

... all the games now suck... so badly that everyone's trying to go back in time to re-experience the old games all over again... and failing at it. -_-

(failing in that it's still just not the same as the first time, not in that everyones trying to cash in on the re-release market)
