I've been dropping in here for a while now to pick up hints and answers so I figured now that I'm far enough along I can contribute a little so I joined up. I've noticed quite a few of you have finished the game, so can one of you tell me where and when you picked up scathe, ardor, flare, etc... basically the high-level spells. I'm not sure the exact level I'm at, but approximately low 50's. I just picked up Reddas as a party guest and I wanted to cheat and hunt as much as I can with the extra help. Going to the Ridorana Cataract is next in my storyline. Do I just need to finish more of the story maybe? Thanks again for the help.

Hrm. I haven't played that far yet (man, I can't imagine how many hours you've logged) but have you shopped at the Clan Centurio shop in the Muthru Bazaar in Rabanastre recently? It's easy to miss, but I discovered several excellent spells there recently I would have missed if I hadn't checked it.

I'm not that far myself, but a friend of mine says he got Flare and Scourge in Balfonheim - if they're not available to you there yet, you may have to progress further in the storyline first.

Can't help you with Ardor and Scathe, sorry.

Id like to know where/when these spells are as well. Im at about the same point as you (in the ridorana catoract with reddas) and im in my mid-late 50's. Still no sign of the spells. They are not in the clan shop (not yet at least) and im a knight of the round rank. Its possible i missed them in a normal shop somewhere, but i dont think so.

Damn this is the longest FF i have ever played lol. 95 hours and im only in my mid 50's. I assume its going to be well over 100 hours by the time i finish the game. Every other FF from 7 on up can be beaten in 30-50% of that time, even if you hunt for the secrets. o_O

Yeah, I'm just past the 100-hour mark.... Paragon of Justice rank, and now routinely getting my ass whipped by a Hunt Club mark called Disma. If you hunt down the ancient man of mystery, it looks like you'll have to face this thing, and be ready for it when it comes. He hits hard and has high HP. But I'm babbling. Thanks for the help guys....

I think this game is beatable in a normal Final Fantasy length of time or close to it if you skip scenes and proceed only through the main plot generally. Thing is, I don't think most of us are doing that.

I believe you can't get the higher level black magic spells until you actually complete the Pharos, as they won't be on sale before that. The level 6 black magic spells and Flare should be sold at Balfonhim. Scathe or whatever should be at the secret item shop in the Necrohol of Nabudis. Ardor or whatever should be in the Barheim passage item shop. Hastega is at the item shop in South Bank Village or whatever and Renew should be the item seller once you teleport to Dalmasca Westersand. Other high level magic should be sold at either Balfonheim and maybe some at Archades. Something like whatever.

That's a huge help... thing is, I don't wanna lose Reddas as a party member when I go to finish the rest of the hunts. Does he hang around after the Pharos?
