You see I don't get how people can list muultiple instances of the same band. I don't think one band can make all that many different radical changes in music.

Zulu
12-05-2006, 01:16 AM
It is possible in some cases. Grace started out in Disco, then turned to Rock, then turned to New Wave, then turned to r'n'b, then turned to Reggae, then turned to Dance Pop.

I'm with Hogan on this one. If youre most influential albums are all the same group, you're probably boring and one dimensional.

9 yo Rush - Exit... Stage Left - first Rush album I heard, and my intro to prog
11 yo Dream Theater - Images and Words - took my progness up a level
15 yo No Use For A Name - Leche Con Carne - first punk I related to
17 yo Thrice - The Illusion Of Safety - culmination of styles I liked at the time
23 yo Protest the Hero - Kezia - expands farther on Punk/Metal/Prog sound

Or perhaps you just enjoy their music to no end? I do listen other music, but Grace is and will always be number #1 in my book. That doesn't make me one dimensional, just passionate.

I can see how they would be your favoritee albums or whatever but I guess it really defines on how you are thinking about the question. I took it as what do you think are the five most important albums to affect the music world. I only put up four because that is a hard question. I can see that other people are taking it differently but still don't really get listing one band five times, if for nothing more than it being kind of boring.

My fault, I meant it on a more personal note. Which five albums are the most important to you.

Square pusher is less a true 'time-tested' musician than a mere novelty artist. I don't think this type of thing is what should be on someone's list. But to each his own.

Michael Jackson: "Thriller"- It was the first record I ever owned.
Metallica: "And Justice For All"- The first "Metal" album I bought.
Nine Inch Nails: "The Downward Spiral"- The first "Angst" album I bought.
Kate Bush: "The Dreaming"- My first fully-realized musical crush, just based on appearances and talent.
Soundtrack: "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night"- My longest sought album I bought. (Must've looked for that one for about two years, until I found it at a local Anime convention. Understand, this was YEARS before I found out about this site. Heh!)

Metallica - Master of Puppets (cemented my love for metal music)

Opeth - Deliverance (my first exposure to the incredible Progressive Death Metal monsters from Sweden. Incredible...)

Honorable Mentions:

Thrice - The Illusion of Safety
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

Slipknot, their first album. As much as I can't stand them now, it was what got me into metal. For a little while I was listening to rap in gr10. I am quite ashamed.

Tristanias Beyond the Veil album, as it introduced me to a more gothic type of metal.

Pink Floyds Wish You Were Here. No Explanation needed. Its just good.

Iron Maidens Rock in Rio album. They're an excellent live band and this CD has alot of their good songs on it.

Draconian has two albums I started listening to at the same time. Where Lovers Mourn and The Burning Halo. I just added these because its my most recent love.

It was hard narrowing this down to 5, well, 6.

Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways or Deadwing. Can't decide right now.

I thought Deadwing was average at best, nowhere near In Absentia or Lightbulb Sun in terms of creativity and lyrics, though lyrics have never been a strong point for Steven Wilson, some of his lyrics are embarrasingly bad.
