I believe that Ashe is the Main Character of this game... What about you guys??? I wonder why they made Vaan as the main character?

They didn't make Vaan the main character. Unless you consider someone who you just use in towns a main character. And I'd have to agree that Ashe is probably the one the story revolves around the most.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. It's not really Vaan's story, contrary to what I thought before I played it. I think the main character is either Ashe or Basch. We learn a lot about both and they both realize their destinies in the end.

The only real way that Vaan is related to the thing is because he is still mourning over his dead brother, Reks.
I really thought Balthier was a major role, because of his connections with the Empire.
Yet, main character is easily Ashe.

i think he means the story focuses on all 6 characters rather than just one main one

It is hard to tell, but there are characters that heavily stand out.

Reminds me a bit of FFX, where Tidus narrated and was the avatar that walked around, but it was Yuna's story, primarily (despite what Tidus may have said about it being his story and all).

wait a minute, there's enough of a story in this gam efor there to be a main character, none of the characters have enough development for me to be able to say that anyone is the main character. But Ashe is def the closest thing to. (relax I'm just screwing around) (sorta)

and I disagree I think Tidus or Yuna could be considered the main character of X, what would the story be without Tidus trying to figure his whole "thing" out?

Vaan is the main character, there is no denying it. He is the male protaganist out to save the world. Yes he is the only character that you can run around to stores and he's listed first in the instruction maneul, party list, status list liscense board and gambits. He is the only character that is present through out the entire game and does not fade in and out of the story. His starting weapon even leads us to conclude that he is the sword weilding main character. VAAN IS THE MAIN CHARACTER!!!

Just because he is in EVERY cutscene and he wields a sword in no way does not make him a main character.

SPOILERS

It is arguable that either Ashe or Balthier are the main characters. You find the most about Balthier through the course of the game (he was once a judge, his relation to Cid, and he has the most major tie to the empire. Also ever notice that he basically chooses what the party will do next?) and every character is somehow tied to him.

Also, the ending when he disappers leaves the door wide open for any possibilty.

I'm just asking this for a "yes" or "no" answer, but is their any love story at all in this because the game really doesn't focus on Vaan much

The story is more revolved around the whole war between the countries, not the actual people.

I agree w/ Joey, the story is mainly based on the war, but if a main char. was decided, Ashe would easily take the spot.

I don't think there really is a main character..

There obviously is a protagonist vs antagonist.

Or else there would be no plot.

What you could say that makes sense is that Dalmasca is the protagonist while Archades stands as the antagonist.

I love it how people in here bitch and moan about there being no love here. I'm glad this game doesn't have one, since you know, it makes for a much more unique and mature story, which is why I loved it.

I'd say "maybe" or depends how you look at it.

Without getting into specific spoilers, I would argue that there is some implied romance. Though if you want some stupid scene in a pond like FFX you'll be disappointed. After the ending, I was left wondering about what might happen relationship wise between many of the characters... there's definitely room for romance to happen in the future. It's just that the middle of such an epic conflict isn't exactly the right time for that kind of thing, and unlike other FF games the characters realized that a pushed through before getting all kissy with the kind of ridiculous stuff like in FFX and FFVIII.

Unlike what some have said, I think Character was a very strong part of this game. The characters were VERY close and every character cared deeply about everyone else. I loved how there were such a variety of interactions. Just because the connections weren't lovey-dovey doesn't mean that character wasn't important...

Oh and Ashe is pretty clearly the main Character. Baltheir is also important for spoilery reasons, but I think he realizes his "Leading Man" comments are facetious. :) Vaan's just along for the ride. Which is fine! I like Vaan a lot. But he's not the force behind any of the events that are happening so he's not THE main character.

"Main character" doesn't have to be equal to hero or heroine. He/she is typically someone who leads us through the story.

I think it was their intention to portray Vaan as the main character because we see the story through his eyes. Unfortunately, because he is not the leader, Square Enix really couldn't just focus on his view point. Thus, we'll see him in the distance while Ashe and Basch plot the next move, or Fran relays some important info to Ashe, etc. Just because Vaan isn't the one making the plans, doesn't mean he's not the main character. I believe he is because in the very beginning of the game, when you begin to run into the other characters and create your party, the only one you constantly have control of is Vaan. Afterall, who knows what Basch was up to between the time from when they entered Rabanastre, to when Vaan delivered the sword. Or what Balthier and Fran might've discussed while hanging out in the Sandsea?

As far as importance, I definitely think Ashe and Balthier seem to be the most important.
