Wow, here's some interesting news for the few PS3 fans like myself...

PS3 Accepts Any Third-Party HDD
By Jason Bayer on Nov 12, 2006

Maybe the most interesting and cool feature of the PS3 is its removable and upgradable Hard Drive. Well if 20GB or 60GB doesn't float your boat, then how bout 120GB? or 200GB?

According to the PlayStation 3's included Safety and Support manual, the system will accept any 2.5" Serial ATA hard disc drive, and not only officially licensed Sony products. This opens up the possibility of installing a much larger drive than what the system comes with. The manual does note that "Proper operation is not guaranteed for all models" of hard drives, but obviously this is Sony's "just in case" small print.

But remember that your 3rd party Hard Drive must be 2.5" and must be a Serial SATA for it to fit in the drive and work properly.

oh, more news...

PS3 Compatible With Bluetooth Headsets
By Jason Bayer on Nov 12, 2006

An official headset for trash-talking during online play on PS3 is in the pipeline, but before it arrives Sony has told CVG that you'll be able to configure Blutooth mobile phone headsets to work with PS3 in much the same way.

In the PS3 firmware is a Blutooth Settings menu where, as on-screen text explains, you will be able to configure link-ups with headsets, microphones and headphones that are Blutooth compatible.

This means that instead of waiting for official peripherals, you can get your PS3 talking online, among other things, using products already available.

It is not yet known when official Sony PS3 headsets will arrive, but we'd expect not too long after US launch.

These are features which Sony should have been touting months ago, instead of letting Ken go crazy saying "IT'S A COMPUTER! ONLY REALLY RICH PEOPLE WILL HAVE ONE!"

I'm really glad about the HDD thing, because that means that anyone who wants to spend the extra cash can get not only a bigger HD, but potentially a faster one. And Bluetooth support is a really smart idea; I wonder if it will work the other way around, and the PS3 bluetooth headset will work with my RAZR V3x?

On a slightly related note, I absolutely demand a PSP upgrade with an iPod-esque internal HD (available in different flavours; 20GB and 60GB seem to be Sony's norm, so we'll go with that) and Bluetooth support. A headset for my PS3, PSP and phone would be brilliant. I realise that putting an internal HD in would up the price significantly (most of the iPod's price tag is the internal flash drive), but it would be nice, especially with the new PlayStation Network functionality. I'd like the space to keep multiple 600MB+ games, thank you.

Lovely! Now if only they could release a firmware upgrade that lets you download in the background and possibly...a truely wireless controller. :P

What's not wireless about the Sixaxis? It uses 2.4 Ghz wireless technology, same as the Xbox 360 Controller and the Wii Remote.

Also: damn Sony for coming up with a neat controller name. It really rolls off the tongue... 'sixaxis'.

Well, it's RUMOR that they are redesigning the PSP with a hard drive and camera. As for price, flash memory is coming down in price.

According to this source, you'd still have to plug something (Whatever the fuck that device is) to the PS3 for it to be recognized.

That is still "truly wireless" because there are no wires involved.

Does it actually matter ?_?

My friend read in a magazine that they're planning on releasing a PSP with these kinds of features. He plans on getting one. I'm happy with my PSP because I can't remember if he said that they will be coming in white. But I like the black and silver look. I think it's sexy!

Dude. You have to plug it in to charge the battery.

Hey, that looks like Best Buy. The only thing I don't like about the controllers and PS3 is that it's see through. Especially under the wrong light.

Raidenex
11-25-2006, 10:42 AM
Just to clarify; the controller probably doesn't come pre-charged, so like ixnine said, the first time you use it you have to plug it in.

After that, you can just turn on the power and the PS3 picks it up automatically.

Also: Sony has NOT announced a PSP with an inbuilt 4 GB flash drive, as the rumour goes. That was based on an analyst report that said they should, but Sony has denied this is happening.

It would be pretty stupid of them if they're not redesigning the hardware, though.

Well what I already new was confermed: Stores got there PS3's in yesterday afternoon and I did not sick around to wait. If I would have waited at Best Buy for about 3 hours I could be playing one right now. :notgood:

Wow, what a great OPINION of your very own.

Seriously, though. If any of the PlayStation 3 launch titles had been PS2 games, would you have honestly bought any of them?

The only one that looks semi-decent is Resistance, but paying $600+ for it is a bit much.

what's funny is did the same thing with my PS2
threw a 300 gig HDD in there and ripped my games onto it to keep my discs in primo condition

Raidenex
11-26-2006, 03:11 AM
That's a bit of a different situation though, because the HDD in the PS2 wasn't used by the OS like the PS3 one is.

but it was more similar than you think, there was a pseudo-OS (loader) that you had to install before you could run .iso files from the hard drive...cracking and creating an installer from the original OS isn't all that hard...it's getting my hands on the OS in the first place that'd be difficult...
that's what third-party installers are for =P

Actualy I got my PS2 on launch. My first game was Madden. And I would have gotten Tony Hawk and Ridge Racer.

Yeah, all the 360 controllers come charged. That's the only down side of the PS3 I can think of.

Gilthanos
11-26-2006, 05:05 AM
wow... they really don't come precharged?

As if not having enough units at launch wasn't enough... ...better come with a charge cable. Or I'd be miffed.

If I had gotten a PS3 at launch I would have gotten Untold Legends, but mainly because I loved the PSP games and I love the button mashing type dungeon crawlers.

You would have bought Project 8 and Ridge Racer 7 if they were for the PS2? Fair enough. I'd just like to note though that Project 8 is the same as the 360 version, and Ridge Racer 7 is a slight upgrade from Ridge Racer 6, available on the 360.

my 360 controller came charged.

None of the 360 Controllers boxed with the Premium set come charged. They come with batteries included; there's a difference. If you want a rechargeable battery, you actually have to buy the Play and Charge Kit.

Untold Legends on the PSP was broken, and simply not as good as the PS2's similarly themed games.

Compared to Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath, it fails.
