I'm a newb to music, and i'd like it if you guys could help me find the best songs by the best bands. I don't really care which ones, and, if anyone knows of a good, free download site, that would be helpful aswell.Limewire isn't doing so good anymore :(

Sign up to www.albumbase.com to download entire albums' worth of material. For individual songs I don't know.

As for my own personal recommendations (for individual songs), I'd say:
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Opeth - Moonlapse Vertigo
Opeth - Serenity Painted Death
Opeth - The Leper Affinity
Opeth - Demon of the Fall

None of these are pure rock songs though, it's mainly all Progressive Death Metal, but they do go soft with some of the most beautiful soft interludes I've ever heard. Also, Opeth's songs/albums in general are very rewarding bringing in a mixture of a lot of different styles and time signatures.

That's fine. I don't really know what the different genres are. I'm downloading those Opeth things now.

Word of warning, it may take a while to get into them but there is a reason why their fan base is getting bigger and bigger at an increasing rate.

Swedish Fish
11-18-2006, 09:14 PM
I'm with dr.tchoky about album base. But about the songs I'd recommend:

Disturbed - Get Psycho
Godsmack - Awake
Anything by Lamb Of God
The stuff dr.tchocky put for Opeth plus the Grand Conjuration and Ghost of Perdition
Children Of Bodom - Sixpounder
Fear Factory - Archetype

All of these songs/bands are either Nu, Heavy, Industrial, or Death Metal of varying levels.

EDIT: You might wanna check out Korn's Let's Do this Now and Twisted Transistor. Also:
Slayer - Here Comes The Pain, Payback, Dead Skin Mask
Lots of stuff by Samael too

Psycho_Cyan

Some more suggestions, because I'm just self-centered enough to think I might matter. Yeah, these should be from a nice variety of genres, so you can get a feel for what you like. Most of these are personal faves, so don't take my list as authoritative at all.

Black Sabbath-Iron Man
Metallica--Master Of Puppets, One, The Memory Remains
Living Sacrifice--Symbiotic
Blindside--Pitiful

I'll probably think of others once I click that "post" button, LoL.

Sweet, I really like Opeth now, I'm downloading the stuff Kailas recommended. Next will be ChunkyMunky :D
btw whats the deal with the way the guys in Opeth talk? Are they trying to be scary? I think it's the stupidest thing i've ever heard.

Hex Omega
11-18-2006, 11:08 PM
Its Death Metal, and its fantastic. Also, try 'Deliverence' by Opeth. My personal favourite bands would be:

Bloc Party
The Mars Volta
Dream Theater
Pink Floyd
The Pixies

check those guys out~~~

If you want individual songs, or any other bands, drop me a PM. I could go on all day.

Dr. Lucien Sanchez
11-18-2006, 11:11 PM
Well, yes and no to if they're trying to be scary with the death growls. Yes, because that's the sort of effect they're going for, if you go to www.darklyrics.com/o/opeth.html and read some of their lyrics a lot of the lyrics are very bleak (though they are also very beautiful and well thought out) and entail a lot of very evil lyrics. But all so no they're not using the growls to be scary because the growls just seem to flow within the music itself.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy

The Who - My Generation
Black Sabbath - Sweat Leaf
Black Sabbath - Hole in the Sky
Black Sabbath - Symptom of the Universe
Led Zepplin - When the Levee Breaks
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion
Tom Petty - I Won't Back Down

These are actual rock/hardrock songs and while they're fairly well known I think they're classics and you need to check them out if you haven't.

Also check out other songs by those people and bands/artists like Deep Purple, Cream, The Birds, Neil Young, AC/DC, REM, Pink Floyd, The Mars Volta, U2, The Beatles, Stone Temple Pilots, The Clash, Soundgarden, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, etc

As for metal I suggest:

Megadeth - Rust in Peace (original, NOT the remastered one) and Peace Sells But Who's Buying? albums
Metallica - Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All albums
Testament - The Gathering album
Slayer - Reign in Blood & Seasons in the Abyss albums

I could give you plenty more I'm really into but to me those are the only essentials

"The Light that Blinds" by Shadows Fall
"Laid to Rest" by Lamb of God is pretty cool.

Well if you want to go in the complete opposite direction and listen to quirky up beat guitar pop you should check out The Unicorns or Islands, The Lovely Feathers, Dressy Bessy, and Of Montreal. A lot of those bands also implement a great deal of other things in their music and make you smile when you listen to them.

as far as songs go from each band

The Unicorns - Tuff Ghost and Tuff Luff are my personal favorites

Islands - Where There's a Will There's a Whalebone is totally awesome

The Lovely Feathers - Pope John Paul is pretty neat but so is everything else they have recorded

Dressy Bessy - I really like "Stop Foolin' "

Of Montreal - Eros' Entropic Tundra is pretty neat and so is Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games

everyone hates my genre here!
Metal is nothing but crapy guitar riffs over loaded with distortion that make it sound like kittens in a blender. to infise on this! metalica sucks! so called lords of metal, sound like half trained gorillas and and an anteater trying to make nice vocals. im not to fond of iron madian either. all metal sounds like one great big noise, i cant tell an f&ing difference from one song to the next.and i did say i like AC/DC, some peole consider them metal, others dont, but for the ones who do, AC/DC is blues based and each song has at least one or two distinguseable riffs in it. there. my opinion.

There are very apparent differences from one song to the next in almost all decent metal bands. That encompases vocals, basslines, guitar riffs, and drumlines.

Fix'd! :smrt:

I'm not a huge metal fan myself, but I notice signifigant differences between the bands I like and bands I don't. The bands I like generally have guitarists with at least decent tone--almost every last crap band I've heard has this absolutely horrid sound thanks to absurd detuning and distortion pedals (and probably amps, too) that weren't designed to handle those frequencies. The drums are also much more in sync with the guitars. While they do the 1/32-note double-bass thing on occasion, it's not a huge part of the song--It seems like the crappier bands tend to rely on that "beat" for large parts (if not the entirety) of a given song. There's more I listen for, but I'm not going to write an essay, here ;)

They're compilations of some largely good classic and modern rock (a bit of metal too) songs that were featured in the second and third seasons of a show called Supernatural. Decent enough show, I guess, but the music is friggin' great.

Those compilations might also be nice since it covers a wide variety of bands and might lead you to some others that you really like.

The downloads are, of course, free.

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Black Sabbath - Faeries Wear Boots
The Doors - Riders on the Storm
The Doors - People are Strange
Judas - Painkiller
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Metallica - Blackened
Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction
Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod
Misfits - Last Caress
Nirvana - Come As You Are
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
Pantera - Walk
Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall
Pink Floyd - Time
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
The Pixies - Where is My Mind?
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
Radiohead - Idioteque
Radiohead - Karma Police
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea
The Smashing Pumpkins - Here is No Why
The Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With ********* Wings

I can go on and on and on...
*Also I think Radiohead's OK Computer is like an awesome album and so is Kid A.
*Daydream Nation is a wonderful Sonic Youth album too.

Don't worry. I'm pretty sure that it's okay for rock fans to like that one. After all, it's Kansas' one good song.
