I know it's a late review of the gig, but I haven't been able to get my hands on any photos since the show until now (I was too stoned to the bring the camera, though I think I recall leaving the camera in favour for bringing more spliffs).

Anyway, me and four other friends left where we live at 1pm in a car, which my mate Dave was driving. I took us 2 hours to finally reach Exeter (we stopped off at a services on the way to sneak in a quick spliff and get refreshments). We got to Exeter at about 3pm and had to trudge around Exeter for a few hours, and arrived to line-up at The Great Hall at about 6:30pm (the doors open in one hour).

People were lining up past the tour bus which was parked out front, and we all managed to get a quick look inside (Jurassic Park was playing on a small monitor).

Eventually 7:30pm arrived, and them doors opened. When I walked inside to the foyer my first sight I see is a table selling milk, tea and cookies, they were quite nice surprisingly. Next I headed to the merchandise table, which was tended by a very grumpy Scottish lady, and bought myself an Opeth flag (whilst at the same time not trying to get my hands bitten off).

Eventually we made our way inside the main hall to wait a bit more, but soon enough the support band, Paradise Lost came on stage. They were pretty good, I hadn't heard much of their stuff before the gig, but they were pretty darn good. Very loud, as expected of course. After what may have been about 30 minutes. Paradise Lost said their goodbyes and left the stage.

During the break between the two bands I managed to get a couple of spliffs in, readying myself for Opeth. I have to say I was kind of nervous. Anyway after about 10 minutes of waiting on came their intro music (what I would say as a kind of medieval festival music) and on came the band to a massive roar and proceeded straight into 'Ghost of Perdition' which was just so heavy and loud, Opeth were infinitely heavier and louder than Paradise Lost. My, the atmosphere through out the gig was amazing. When it was heavy you felt really angry, you could feel the adrenaline pumping through your body, and when they went mellow everything seemed so ethereal. I'm trying kind of hard to describe this to you, but every time I try to describe the emotions and feelings of the concert I feel pretty stupid because it's just impossible really.

Mikael (the vocalist and lead/rythym guitarist) is an amazing front man, he's funny and very witty, he talked quite a lot as well, but not too much to feel that he's just wasting precious time the he could be using to play more songs. Opeth as a whole were on top form, Martin 'Axe' Axenrot has taken over from Martin Lopez's drum duties superbly, and Martin Mendez (bass), Peter Lindgren (2nd guitar) and Per Wiberg (keyboards) were fantastic.

Anyway, in a nutshell, Opeth were fantastic and are the best band I've seen live (just so many emotions at the same time). The only downers on the night were some shitty 12 year old trendies/goths/emos who tried to start a Wall of Death, which I stopped by walking into the middle of their would-be wall of death and shouting that they should all grow-up and that Opeth ain't the sort of concert they should do it at (leave it at your shitty Trivium and Lamb of God concerts). But even they really weren't anything to stop the shear awesomeness emanating from the band.

As for pictures, as I explained I took no camera, some friends took some pictures but I haven't been able to get my hands on those yet, so I found a website where someone has uploaded pictures from the gig (though they've got the websites' logo right in the middle of them, cunts).

Mikael Åkerfeldt

Martin Mendez

Peter Lindgren

Unfortunately the website doesn't have any pictures of Martin Axenrot and Per Wiberg, also it would have been cool if they had some shots from further back, but oh well.

The set-list was:
Ghost of Perdition
When
Under the Weeping Moon
The Night and the Silent Water
Windowpane
Face of Melinda
The Grand Conjuration
Blackwater Park
Encore:
Demon of the Fall

The set is very well rounded over all of their albums only leaving off anything from the Deliverance album, and they played Blackwater Park and Demon of the Fall which was just the icing on the cake for for me.

Words of wisdom: Go see them when they're playing near you, even if you don't think you're up for all of the growls I'm sure, 100% positive you'll have a fantastic time. My mate Brian, who listens to emo shit, went to the concert having barely heard a single song of theirs, he came out saying they were fucking fantastic and probably the best band he'll ever see.

The End.

Yeah, something from Deliverance would have been awesome, but the last two tracks they played were just face melting. I was head-banging so much that I could feel the pain in my neck and back but just had to keep that head-banging up, it was as if I needed to.

Wow. That sounds like an awesome set list. I've been a big fan of Opeth for a long time now. I seen them in September in Detroit at Gigantour. Luckily their encore was Deliverance =) Seen them twice now, and they kick ass.
