Name one of your favorite bands or artists that are not as widely known as others, or an artist or band that you thinks deserves more recognition.

I have to say Flogging Molly for a band, they are a Irish rock band that I've seen at several of these Irish fests by my house. They are very good and have catchy tunes. I also like how they use more unique instruments like that bag-pipe and flutes in their rock songs.

There are also 2 solo artists I really like, they are Ronnie Day and Secondhand Serenade. They both sing very great acoustic songs. They're songs have very emotional lyrics. They both sound like John Mayer in a way.

I don't know if Flogging Molly qualify as an unknown artist they have been kicking around for about ten years and have played some pretty big places. (Also they are from LA)

but yeah some people I think are neat that others may not have listened to

Thunderbirds Are Now! (http://www.thunderbirdsarenow.com/)
pretty much a band that is just super fun to listen to

Mason Jennings (http://www.masonjennings.com/)
he is kind of singer/songwritery but his lyrics are pretty clever and he has a pretty awesome voice not really sure how popular he is outside of Minnesota but he did recently sign to a major label so I wouldn't be suprised if he was getting quite a bit more exposure now

Subtitle (http://www.giovannimarks.com/)
is a really awesome rapper. He's from LA and pretty big in the underground hip hop scene. He seems like a really cool smart guy and is a pretty darn excellent rapper.

edit: none of these bands are like OMG OBSCURE INDIE CRED but are all totally worth checking out

I thought the same. I hear about them all the time, they're actually pretty well known.

Anyway, I doubt any of the crap I listen to is any way unknown. Not all of it is super mainstream or anything but there's nothing I listen to that's mostly underground or what have you.

jackie leven - scottish folk singer-songwriter, although that doesn't pay justice to his songs which contain some excellent lyrics and a mixture of folk and synthesised musicianship.

mercy machine - excellent group, sort of similar to dead can dance, highly recommend them.

Holly Throsby (http://www.hollythrosby.com/) is like the most gorgeous person ever and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1lpsu-PRyA) is my favourite song by her.

Edit: hahahahahahaha holy shit what the fuck was I thinking when I wrote that?

Holly Throsby has the worst voice in the world and she should go into exile for a few decades :)

Lupe Fiasco is the most lyrical new rapper to come up in the underground in a long time, and he's pretty much unknown since he's not talking about mainstream crap like cars or money.

I guess some of the metal and electronic stuff I listen to is actually unknown to an extent, but in those actual "communities" not sooooo much so I guess I'm still just a mainstream whore :(

He's actually pretty well known these days and has made numerous appearances on certain nationally broadcast programs, in addition to his videos getting airtime on such over the past few months.

Still amazing, though.

My "unknowns" deserving of recognition as of this post:

Fortunado (http://www.myspace.com/Fortunado) - An absolutely amazing upbeat third wave ska and reggae (With some jazz/blues influence even in some songs) band out of Connecticut. They've been around for a little bit now (Few years) but only less than a year have really been getting their name out there. Very smooth horn lines, great vocalist, good package overall.

R.A.M.B.O. (http://rambo.computershateme.org/index.php) - Thrashcore at its finest, these guys bring enough distorted, raw energy to get virtually anyone wanting to pump their fist. Unbelievable work on their second release, although they're generally considered an acquired taste for the casual music fan.

The Flashbulb (http://theflashbulb.net/index2.html) - A bit more known than the others mentioned, but this one definitely fits into the "deserves more recognition" category. I recommend for fans of breakcore or fans of music in general, really. A nice selection of unique and fresh tracks that don't get the respect they deserve.

Ensiferum (http://www.ensiferum.com/) - Amazing Scandanavian melo-death/Viking metal band.

Machinae Supremacy (http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/) - Hopefully someone does know these guys, and if anyone doesn't, they should. They bring a somewhat unique power metal sound to the table by incorporating a synthesizer using a Commodore 64 SID chip into their music, which creates a nice refreshing blend.

Probably more to come soon.

You guys should also check out "The Living End." One of my dad's friends works with a record company and they are rather new and he gave me their cd State of Emergency for free. It's pretty good.

They might just be new to where-ever you're from but they've been on the Australian charts since I was in primary school so that's what... 8 years?

The Living End came to our little town this year for the one night stand and everyone thought they were really good but I seem to be crazy in thinking an energetic live act is somewhat wasted when the material is shite.

Ari Hest is another up and coming artist. My guitar teacher showed me his music. He has a great song out now called "Strangers Again." Check it out on Limewire or itunes or something. He's a great acoustic artist.

Also some girl I saw on VH1 You Oughta Know Artists is Regina Spektor. She's ok but has some very catchy songs. Check out her song "Fedility."

Also the VH1 you ought to know thing really annoys me because I think they only change like once a month. (plus I remember seeing an add for The Fray for weeks on end. I got angry everytime I saw because The Fray are not very entertaining.)

HEY VH1 THERE ARE ENOUGH GOOD BANDS OUT THERE TO STEP UP PRODUCTION A BIT OK

Novembre. They're an Italian band and sound kind of like old Opeth, but there are more prog moments than there are death metal moments, though the death metal moments aren't that heavy and it all sounds quite dream-like.

Well, I think INXS. I don't know if you guys know them or not, but their songs are great. I like My Chemical Romance too, especially their song Helena. You should watch the video, it's really creepy. . For solo artists, I'd like Kelly Clarkson. She won the American Idol the very first time. Her songs are great too.

They had some decent exposure about 4 years ago or so but then just kinda dissapeared. They're back playing now and unsigned so aren't likely to get back into the mainstream anytime soon. Plus you've gotta be entertained by a band who's lead singer will do a 68 foot stage dive.

When Day Descends, an excellent band from Australia that plays instrumental dark folk mixed with a bit of progressive metal.

www.whendaydescends.com, you can download an entire album (which is one song) from the Downloads section, it's called 'Ascension'.

I've actually seen them twice in concert incidentally, and I also saw him jump off the stage at one of the shows too, lol. I had no idea if he was ok or not, but when I didn't see ambulances, I just assumed all was fine... Anyways, with that said, BHC aren't bad, but, again, nothing incredibly great there...

I tried putting this up in reviews and recommendations, but it didnt quite work. this is a more suitable thread for it anyway.

theres this french band I found, its called symphonia, and theyre releasing an album january I think they use a mix of things in their music, and although I listen to this stuff all the time I dont know how to classify it.

Have a listen and tell me what you think.

Mad Caddies; I don't know many if any people that have heard of them. They got some really good unique tunes and take advantage of many different types of instruments. Very good listen.

Also,

Say Anything; Some weird stuff, but also some really good songs in my opinion.
