Though it's not a series, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem was pretty crazy on the Gamecube. During some parts the game would use blackouts and video screens to make you think your TV was broken, then when you get up it fixes and zombies fill the room and monsters are chasing you. That game was pretty badass.

Silent Hill for runner up.

Yes but this type of threads actually never end.

I have not played a lot of horror games, mostly because i do not own any console of the ps2 generation and because my ps1 is not in a good condition on reading cds anymore. I have to say though, that iam 99.9% sure i will never find a scariest game then the original Silent Hill on the ps1. SH was a new expirience for the gamers, it was based on psychological fear of the uknown, and it really scared the hell out of me. The radio idea was original, the appearance of the "otherworld" was really amazing. Silent Hill overrates a lot of survival horror games on the later consoles. The graphics and FMVs were pretty good for its time. The music in the game is excellent, especially the SH theme.

I would say the Silent Hill series are the scariest games ever. No other game can beat those games. And don't anybody say the Resident Evil series is scary because it is not.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; Resident Evil is the best horror series in video gaming. But Silent Hill is a close second that has a scarier atmosphere.

All other horror game series; like Alone In The Dark, Clock Tower, Forbidden Siren, Project Zero and any other one you can think of and name, simply pale in comparison to both the ones I mentioned above.

Yeah. Silent Hill. I refuse to play that game when I'm alone at night. Then again, sometimes it's even worse when there's others home, when they KNOW that I'm all freaked out at the game and use it to scare the crap outta me. XP

Yup, everybody who said Silent Hill was the scariest series ever is right no doubt. Silent Hill might have been the scariest but the story wasn't all that, it was just plain weird. Now Resident Evil , now that game had a great story, it would scare you a few times but not as much as playing Silent Hill. Also, I would like to add something about the movies, Silent Hill The Movie Kicked ASS & so did Resident Evil one and 2, i can't wait for more coming soon! "BETTER NOT SCREW IT UP MOFO'S"

Though I've got to give this one to Project Zero (II), Silent Hill does come a very close second. I was playing number 3 the other day and that had me sweating a few times. It seemed a lot less scary whilst on speed though, you just rush through everything and barely notice anything.

Silent Hill WAS the scariest game ever, until Resident Evil 4 came out. Anyone who thinks that Silent hill is scarier than Resident Evil 4 is silly. Sure it has a scarier atmosphere, and it is CREEPIER than RE4, but changing the view to an over the shoulder camera completely changed how scary the game is. Seeing something from a fixed third person camera angle is basically nothing now.

Project Zero was quite scary from what I remember playing of it. Wish I had it now. But, yeah, out of those particular three, Silent Hill is definitely the winner.

RE4 wasn't scary at all. Even the developers admitted that it was more an action game than horror. I used to find Silent Hill the scariest when I was younger, but it's not as scary as it used to be growing up. So I'm going to have to say Project Zero is number 1 with Silent Hill as runner-up.

I've never played this "Project Zero" game you all say is so scary... but I'd have to cast my vote for the Fatal Frame series. Silent Hill wasn't all that scary (still great games, just not very scary), and Resident Evil never really was.

No way, that is insane. The Resident Evil movies are absolute utter rubbish, and I hate them. What Anderson did to the Resident Evil series was five steps in the wrong direction; because almost everything in them completely contradicts the main story arcs of the games. The first Resident Evil movie was bad enough; piss-poor special effects, new (and stereotyped) characters which no one gave half a shit about, and a completely improvised story that was down-right incorrect. But then he goes ahead and makes a second... trying to mesh it together with one of the games and take improvisation and idiotic story-telling to a new level. The only ass either of those Resident Evil movies kicked was their own, and god help us, because TWO MORE are due out. Anderson won't stop until he has pounded Capcom's story into the friggin' ground.

*agrees with Mr. Bunniesworth*

Those movies almost made me hate the Resident Evil Franchise. They turned "Survival Horror" into "Kung-Fu with Zombies".

Not the most subtle of changes.

Exactly. Resident Evil was "scary" only in that every now and then something would pop out at you and make you go "HOLYSHIT"... but that'd be it. Silent Hill had the atmosphere, but the enemies weren't so much scary as just plain weird. Fatal Frame had it all.

I have played Silent hill, Resident Evil, and Fatal Frame series. Out of them all Fatal Frame is still the scariest.

The atmosphere is just plain creepy, the ghost are well done and the TALK to you as you fight them, they pop up in random places and not all the time do they attack so you get twitchy as hell, and add to it you can help but feel for the ghost or at least most of them anyway.

I mean come on you go into a sleeping room and the futons have Human shaped lumps in them. Or messages get write in blood. The ones I hate is when you are walking by and either a ghost shows up in a different place and creeps you out then goes away or something moves that isn't suppouse to move such as a doll or a chest something like that. When I was playing Fatal Frame I I was walking up a porch steps to get on to a walk way when right next to my feet a ghost girl shows up hisses at me then vanishes before I can snap a pick of her. Scaried the living crap out of me. Also there is a Bloody hand screen saver when you pause the game I was doing a chore real quick maybe 20 mins or so came back and my screen was covered in handprints add to the fact it was night and I got creeped.

Fatal frame I think is the most scariest period.

 OMG. Scary=very yes.

As for me, I don't play horror games (I really am not the kind that enjoys getting mindfucked). But I agree that from all the reviews I read, I guess I'll also put in a vote for Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, even if it's for a console I don't own. Getting BSOD'ed on a game console game is just plain wicked.

:rolleyes::laugh: Surprised that no one mentioned Barney's Hide and Seek for the Megadrive/Genesis. Just thinking of that game makes me not only reluctant to admit that I own a Megadrive (I don't own a copy of the game btw. I have a serious dislike for the wretched magenta ugly), but also from all the reviews about it that I've read, makes me shiver in fear.

Silent Hill games have always made me want to know more about what was going on, and I wasn't particularly scared by anything. Grossed out, yes, but not really scared.

Resident Evil 1-3 and CV aren't quite scary. They're frightening when you're running and you're short on ammo, but that's not a real scare. Resident Evil 4 isn't so much about scaring you, nothing really made me jump in that game, but that's because RE4 gave you so much firepower.

Siren/Forbidden Siren are scary, if for no reason than the fact you can't really see your enemies and that the game really restricts your resources and your ability to fight back.

Eternal Darkness starts to mess with your head when that sanity meter gets low, and when it's 4am and you're character's head explodes or the room you enter is upside down, it's a bit disturbing.

Ok, this may sound a little different to previous suggestions but one of the few games that scared me was Manhunt. With its superb soundtrack and creepy atmosphere it gave me many a jump. I usually don't find games that scary to be honest.

Yes. The feeling of utter defenselessness unless you obtain a power pellet is truly terrifying.

On another note, The Simpsons games are pretty execrable in quality, that they could be relegated under the horror genre of Video Games. Especially, The Simpsons: Tree house of Horror for Game Boy Color. :-P

Silent Hill is my favorite. I really enjoyed 2. However I will agree with the post that Resident Evil offers the best game play. Seriously Silent Hill 1 is in sore need of a remake. Its hard to play that after playing the others.

Although not my favorite of these type of games I did enjoy them and felt they were worth mentioning are the Alone In The Dark games.
