They have a red mage by the name of Alexis. You have to sacrifice Eiko and Dagger at the beginning of the fourth disc in order to get her. She's able to equip swords like Steiner and excels in ever statistical category, except maybe speed.

They actually have red mages all over the world especially in Daguerro. Although not playable they are there: white hair, seemingly donned in artifact armor from XI, black journey-style mage steeples, almost look like Burmecians/Cleyrans.

Yes, you're specifying why not playable but after putting out examples that there are any at all, it would just complicate the story more I think. The game was revolving around the wars started by Brahne which lead to the source Kuja and eventually Terra and the conclusional bond between all the characters. And character development in a more narrative final fantasy vs the classic ones where you used almost all job classes, and had less of a story to compromise such a battle system, would split your game-play concentration just a tad. Because fighting with so many classes isn't optional like the Chocograph questing.

I suppose in terms in abilities, you could kind of call Beatrix a Red Mage, by virtue of the fact that she can use White Magic as well as knight sword attacks. But that is stretching it a little.

And the NPC Red Mages were definetely Burmecian - you could even see their tails if you looked close enough. But I digress..

Now that i recall it, at the very start of the game when you have Vivi, if you enter the pub in alexandria there is a guy called "Red Mage". He is the guy that teaches you how to play cards :)

Amarant cannot be considered Red Mage?

Arcanine
11-03-2006, 09:07 PM
I think that's Alleyway Jack you're talking about with the first set of Tetra Master tutorials.

And Amarant's more of a non-elementalist with Demi and Return Magic if he's going to be any type of spell-caster. Altough Aura and Chakra are healing based it's more characteristic to a monk, which is what he is.

haha I laughed a little at that

Why would you ever need a red mage? Red mage has always been one of the least interesting job classes to me. Jack of both magics, master of neither.

Arcanine
11-04-2006, 06:04 AM
That's a good question. I think FFXI helps it out a bit with all the passive abilities and whatnot that textures the job classes in XI, but the major idea is there that it's greatest function is independence and second greatest is support/interdependence which is what puts Red Mages into question why when most classes if not all are not this way..

Hrm. I'm only on 56K dialup and also don't fancy paying a monthly fee, so I've never played FFXI. But that sounds neat.

Yeah I stopped playing unwillingly but as far as I got it's just awesome, but probably not too healthy if one can't fit it into their schedule/life.

beatrix is a holy knight

final fantasy 9 character making was so everyone was differant and had there own talent. Since the red mage use's the sword white and black magic it would chang the whole concept of what squaresoft made.

he first 2 don't really matter since i put htem on diferant lines.
I'm sure the first word on that line wihtout any thing on the above it exept an empty space shows it's a start of a sentance. theres 2 sentaces up there and i see 2 peroids...

First, dont quote yourself its redundent.

Second, dragon knights are called Dragoons.

On topic, The two white mages you are complaining about, are not just white mages, Eiko and Dagger are both summoners. Besides, with Vivi's kick ass black magic and Dagger's awsome support/offensive capabilities there is no need for a red mage in FF9.

Side note: please Ruin_sword spell things correctly, realy all you have to do is pay attention. I dont care if you dont use correct capitalization and punctuation, but realy if you try to spell correctly you will make fewer enemies.

I was thinking the same thing Agent-that he might be sain in disguise.

Just look the post where he said "he hasn't respawned to my pm's".

Hmmmmm.

EDIT: Actually, you might not know what that was in reference to. So here's the quote:

ruin_sword --- assuming that you're not sain, how would I know why you would or wouldn't do that? I don't claim to understand the workings of the minds of crackpots and weirdos, I just know that they're out there.

LOL. Why sain, what an unexpected and pleasant surprise!

sain ---- have you acquired the tangerine chocobo yet? You'll need to acquire the tangerine chocobo before you can follow those steps Garamond posted. I'm surprised he forgot.

kurohime

You can also equip her with special armor. What you have to do, though, is be sure to steal from Kuja 100 times, at which point you'll steal the "purple thong" item from him. Then when you get to Hades, you take the hammer, the dark matter, and synth them together, then you get the special gysahl greens to get the tangerine chocobo.

Then you go back to Hades and he'll have a new option in his inventory called, "Kuja's chainmail thong." But I won't tell you how to get that. You just have to do it yourself.

:P

ROKI

And there is a new ability with the tangerine chocobo. Now you can also ente towns with the chocobo, and dick around to find treasures that you may have forgot to get in previous discs and that are not able to get in normal visits. You can also get the Treno card, if you visit Dali with the tangerine chocobo. But first you have to finish that Coffee quest for that old man, and go where you get the last coffee and use a gysahl on Choco.

Agent0042
11-16-2006, 10:54 PM

ROKI --- that's mostly right, but you forgot to mention that the Tangerine chocobo needs to be regenerated regularly at the Chocobo's Lagoon or it loses its powers.

Doesn't Mene also say something about there being an ultimate tangerine chocobo ability, too? Something about being able to go into Alexandria with it, and going over to the grave so it can resurrect Dagger's mom in a special scene in the end, kind of like the end of Return of the Jedi?

I've never gotten that part, though. I hear that you have to have gotten Marcus, Blank, and Beatrix all up to level 99 for that.

I also think that if you can do that, you learn that it's the tangerine chocobo that brought Zidane back to Alexandria in the end of the game.

Damn, I didn't know that. Maybe that's why I couldn't get Beatrix over 99 in my game. Does this have to be the online version of FF9, then? Because I have to go and get it if so.

Agent0042
11-18-2006, 05:52 AM
No, it's actually accessible for both versions, although the online version does give you access to some other important bonus features that aren't normally available. I thought all serious Final Fantasy IX fans had the online version by now. Guess I was mistaken.

Arcanine
11-18-2006, 06:28 AM
It's also easier to get Level 99 versions of Blank, Marcus, AND Beatrix by going to Chocobo's Paradise and asking Fat Chocobo to drain the waterslide revealing a Monster Chamber where you can scan random music CD's in the console drive like in Monster Rancher.
