Listened to Xenosaga Episode II. Fell in love with it, and decided that even though so many people didn't like it, if it had music like that, I'd be sure to find something positive about it. In the end it payed off, because I loved the game and the series as a whole.

It's still better to get the opinion of someone you know and who's played whatever game you are looking at, for a better review. But going by music alone... well sometimes we all get lucky :D

Well, mostly I do the exact opposite and just buy the game before I listen to the music. But that is not so for majority of my recent collectings:

ROCKMAN ZX: ZX tunes is what really what clasped my interest. The remixing was well done. And it gave a new sound to a beloved series. Though I wish capcom would hurry up and make X9 already.

KINGDOM HEARTS 2: Besides from all of the obvious hype and character development, the music is still what really captivated me. Riku, ORG XIII, and Sacred Moon are still my favorites tracks.

If you're looking for an awesome Ace Combat OST, I suggest Ace Combat 5. The final mission song, "The Unsung War" is really epic and gets you pumped about saving the world in the end. And, to top that off, the storyline is unlike any typical flight simulator-ish game; it actually has an in-depth plot that gets you hooked! (Hooray for Namco!)

However, I downloaded the Ace Combat Zero OST, loved it (especially the final track that has a lot of tango/flamenco in it; "Mission ZERO"), and absolutely despised the game. (I mean, really, there's all this hype about this major war in AC5 and you don't see any of the AC5 characters that played a major role in it... AND there's no driving hatred/motivation toward the bad guy at the end...) So really, it's kind of a catch 22...

Ok I'll stop ranting and write a review now... ^_^;;

I just preordered Last Hope LE version, for the Dreamcast, mainly for the soundtrack. I've heard from people, who've played the Neo Geo AES cart, that say it's not that great of a shmup. But the soundtrack, which I've sampled, sounds really good. That's why I preordered the LE versions; it comes with the OST CD.

Jonny Nemesis

I've tried it before, but I prefer to play the game before listening to the soundtrack. It's like it puts the music into a context for me, and makes the music sound that much better because of it.

KairezLightkeeper
01-19-2007, 11:30 PM
I'm in agreement with Jonny Nemesis. Context is a good thing to have, though some songs are definitely good enough to be enjoyed without context. Almost every song from DoC: FFVII didn't interest me until after I played the game, while most of the KHII OST entertained me without any specific memories to attach to the songs (except the crossed-over songs from the first KH).

Definitely agree with the above 2 posters. I really don't enjoy the music if I don't know have an image or idea associated with it. I've tried listening to the Ocarina of Time soundtrack (I've never played the game though), and I couldn't bring myself to enjoy the music at all.

My favourite song from a video game is Stickerbrush Symphony from DKC2. The calm, mellow setting of the bramble levels is what I really remember when I hear that track.

Hahahahahah!! Would you believe me if I said yes?

Absolutely. If the soundtrack blows (and the game is good) I usually just shut the music off if allowed, allow sound effects and voice, and slap on my own choice. Music, without a doubt, influences my decision on purchasing a game.

Wanderer and the Colossus.
I wasn't really motivated about getting the game when I found the soundtrack completely by acident. I got the soundtrack mainly because Kow Otani did alot of the music for it. (Kow did music for Gundam W: Endless Waltz which was another soundtrack that I liked) After being completly blown away by the Epic, Soul Grabbing music of the various Colossi battle tracks I bought the game two hours later and fortunatly I was not dissapointed by the game.
To me if a game appears to look good for me but I can't decide on it, I will judge by the game's soundtrack. Music provides alot of the soul of the game and if I can't get into the music of the game I won't play it even if the game is gorgous and plays like a dream I won't waste my time on it.
Fortunately that hasn't happened yet.

Speaking of DMC, I remember the music from the trailer for the original is what got me interested in the game.(Lock & Load, that song just pumps you up).

Wouldn't you know it? When the very first DMC trailer came out, the music plus the visuals grabbed me really quick. I showed it to my brother, and he reacted the same way. To this day, 'Lock and Load' from the first DMC game is one of my most favorite songs. DMC is also one of my most favorite games, even though I've only briefly played it.

Music does make a big difference. In my case, though, I like the music itself for its aural experience and my delight from it. Even if I haven't played the game, I can usually shape my emotional reaction from it if the songs are extremely well-crafted. For some games, though, playing it first gives it more impact. 'Shadow of the Colossus' was that much more powerful after I played the game, and 'Vagrant Story' was even more true to that standard; same thing with watching 'Xenogears'. But for songs from Ace Combat, Front Mission, and Tsugunai - the beauty and power of the music is all that I need.

every videogame with great music in it are worth the time, imho.

there are a LOT of games I bought based on music, but there was always something else that "helped" me make the decision.

the only exception was Odin Sphere, that I didn't really want to buy because ShitEnix was involved. And since people doing reviews don't understand a shit, I thought Odin Sphere was indeed Square Enix work, while they only made the production on the market (they always do, or should I say ENIX always does, to get the share of a good work that isn't theirs. See Full Metal Alchemist, Mahoujin Guru Guru, The World Ends With You, Mario Slam Basketball and LOTS more for references ._.).

I haven't done this myself, not yet anyway, although I have become interested in trying some games based of their soundtrack, Kingdom Hearts. :)

ye, i quite like to use this method, i think the OST can show the quality of the game, for no regret after i bought a game, it could be a waste of my time and money.

Well, I didn't exactly "buy" it, but after hearing the music from Mega Man X for the SNES, I decided to download the rom and played it. I hated the series, but the music totally blew me away! It's weird how you hate the game/series yet love the soundtrack to it. O_o

that almost sounds insane to me but I'm considering doing it D:

heard some stuff from Ace Combat 04 for the first time. never played any Ace Combat games, not even my genre of game, but I'm tempted to give it a try based on the music ;-;;

Yeah actually...the reason even started the Final Fantasy series all those years back is because of Nobuo's works.

A soundtrack is one of the most important things you can have (entertainment in general).

I'm down with any game Masashi Hamauzu, Motoi Sakuraba, Shoji Meguro, or Hitoshi Sakimoto.

Of course I must include Nobuo Uematsu but he's already hands down sexy genius.

I decided to play Mercenaries 2 based on Chris Tilton's awesome music.

Star Ocean 3. I knew Motoi Sakuraba was composing music for it and I liked his work from previous Tri-Ace games. Music from Sonic games never seem to fail me either.

Yes. I actually got interested in Guilty Gear by listening to the character tracks.

Now I have over 5 versions of Holy Orders(Be Just Or Be Dead) (Ky's Theme), and I still horribly suck at 2D fighting games.

I would go with Dead Space as the most recent game to do that to me. I watched that lullaby trailer for it, and that song just creeped me out enough to be like "damn, I want to play that!"

Definitely. I played Final Fantasy X after purchasing the soundtrack and falling in love with it.

Also, I'd buy Napple Tale, Dew Prism, Angel's Feather, Pixeljunk Monsters and Soukaigi, just because I love the music so much.

Now, but I think I might start doing that. All of the games series I like (Contra, retro-Sonic, Half-Life, Ratchet and Clank, anything by Treasure, Mega Man, Unreal, etc.) all have one thing in common. They have great music. Of course, I'll only do it for budget titles, I'm not going to pay $60 for a new PS3 game (or $40 for a new PC game) until I've played and liked all aspects of the demo.

This one may sound weird, but F-Zero GX initially attracted me because of the music. Good thing too, 'cause it turned out to be an amazing game.

I heard the music from a pc game called Jets 'n' Guns (by an awesome band named Machinae Supremacy), I didn't know it was actually a game at first, but when I saw it, I bought it and loved every second of it.

I bought Sanity and No One Lives Forever because of the interactive soundtracks from a composer I know.

I could definitely see myself checking out some video games based on the soundtrack that come from the game.

I bought tekken 2 about a year ago just because I wanted to play with the music from the game in the back ground...even though I played it to death when it came out years earlier.

Those Ace combat games are calling to me now.

I heard the music from Ace Combat 6, otherwise I'd probably never have picked it up.

Yeah, it didnt work out in my favor too much. Loved the music for Bladestorm, hated the game.

After playing Tempest 2000 for just a few minutes I bought the game, despite not even owning a Jaguar! I thought the music was fantastic; definitely some of the best MOD music I've heard to this day, and even better than the CD version. A few weeks later I bought a Jaguar from my mate's mum's catalogue (not sure you do that kind of thing in the US), having to pay it off in installments for about 2 years. ;-) It was worth it just for Tempest 2000 alone; anyway, just thought I'd share that with you all.

Nice one,

Mike.

A lot of my games come about initially through listening to the soundtrack. Probably the majority.

killer7, Mass Effect, Twilight Princess, Morrowind and Oblivion, Chrono Trigger (a live symphonic version of the theme inspired me), Jade Empire, to name a few.

Ace Combat 6 (well, not just for the music, but it was really good for an arcade "flight-sim"),
Mass Effect 2 (actually, the trailer music from Two Steps from Hell made me curious and I bought the game.
Never regretted it).
Halo games (yeap...really).

Hmm and then some. I can't remember right now.

I remember having a demo disk for the ps1 and after watching a non-playable demo sequence of Chrono Cross and Legend of Mana that I would get these games. The music was fantastic for both as were the style, but the music pulled me in more than anything.
