That's why you can see the wolf in many places where Cloud holds memories and those sorts of feelings--

It appears by Zack's sword, for his regret for not being able to save his friend, and having been saved by him at the cost of his friend's life instead...
It also appears next to Cloud and Tifa after he comes back and finds her lying in the flowerbed...he regretted that he wasn't there earlier for Tifa, and she was injured because of that.
It also appears at the Forgotten City, where his memories of Aeris's passing are, and how he regrets that he couldn't do anything to save her, and just stood there as Sephiroth came down.
All those times, the wolf disappears, and it comes one last time and disappears in the end...
This is supposed to represent Cloud finally being able to let go of his regrets...the "things he's been dragging around."

well... I think Cloud is a pretty archetypal "lone wolf" figure from the start, it could be that people are looking too deep into something that isn't; some symbols are exactly what they look like. The wolf is a wolf, and everything a 'wolf' symbolizes ... the "lone wolf" personality, is one that is, for whatever reason, without a pack, whether exiled, or lost, or the last of, doesn't matter, the 'lone wolf' is different than a solitary, in that they are conciously or subconciously, seeking for a pack to belong to... How this applies to Cloud's character in the story of FF7 is rather obvious to me, and in the movie, the appearances of the wolf all kind of center around the friends he has, the people he fights for, the pack that he has found...

I will totally agree with that because as true as AC was to the game and whatever unreleased manga/doujinshi material related to the game, AC was just as true to the nature of the media: marketing, sales and ratings equal profit. That's probably the only other helpful thing it did toward the fans was be a comparison to Spirits Within, originality vs glitzy glory.

But a representation of Cloud's regrets/personality/subconscoius wouldn't spectate or be in 3rd person to Cloud, it would act out what it represents in that dimension or state of mind Cloud frequently spaced out to with Aeris.

Anyway, in answer: I agree the wolf is an apparition. I really don�t think it�s meant to represent Aerith, though. I'm torn between agreeing with the others who said that the wolf represented Cloud's regret, and saying that it was a manifestation of Zack. It could be as simple as Cloud�s lone wolf tendencies and what-not, but its appearance at Zack�s sword (as if waiting) and its coming to Cloud right before meeting (hearing really) Zack and Aerith, and how it seemed to be guarding Cloud and Tifa after they collapsed lead me to believe that Zack is the wolf. Seeing as both Zack and Aerith were watching over him from the Lifestream, and Aerith appeared as a girl (with representation in the flowers, the rain, and the church), it would make sense for Zack to follow Cloud too.

Seeing as we see the wolf with Cloud at the first scene with him near the buster sword, when he and tifa collapsed in the flowers, and after the part in the forgotten city, and also the part at the end after Cloud if put in the water after hearing Aeris and Zack. But getting back to topic, I have always thought of the wolf being a representation of of his Cloud's guilt, not some otherwordly manifestation of Aeris Gainsborough. From what I've learned myself about symbolism and such (granted it's not much, but it'll do), a animal like a wolf often represents feelings of guilt, dispair, etc.

Even in the game, after Sephiroth killed Aeris, Cloud was portrayed grieving over her death. He more or less stood by and watched Sephiroth's sword impale Aeris from behind, and couldn't move to help her. In a sense he was still blaming himself for allowing her to die, unable to save her.

Of course, that's just my interpretation of the events, and that's why I think the wolf represents Cloud's guilt over Aeris's death.

In regards to the wolf symbolising only one thing, the wolf can symbolise many things, like I said before (True I only gave two examples, but still..). In regards to Shakesphere, I have read some of his works, not many tbh, as I'm not that interested in his style.

Realism doesn't have much to do with symbolism, which is moslty used for poetic or romantic purpose. If you played FFVII, as I think you did, you will have already noticed that they did include symbolism even back then.

The easiest one to notice is near the end of the ending movie. When Red XIII and his kids are at the top of that cliff, looking at Midgar's ruins. Has they roar in homage to their long dead friends, a group of birds pass over them and you can hear children laughing. It cannot be Red's kids because there is too many children's voices at the same time, way more than 2.

In symbology, kids laughing symbolize "renewer", beginning anew, a continuity started over...

Although it is not realistic to hear the kids laugh like that when all we could see on screen was birds and Red XIII's family, the meaning still had a strong meaning and gave the final answer to the player that the planet really had healed itself and that life could take back it's normal course through the lifestream. (Of course, all this would be anihilated by Nomura's obtination to ruin the story that Sakaguchi had first thought about, expecting to milk it and turn it into a MTV commercial, like all that he has touched ever since.
