I let my brother borrow my PSP charger yesterday. Simple enough matter. He borrows, I get it back later in the day. During the day, I ran down the battery in my own PSP, so I was kind of looking forward to getting it back.

Now here's the problem. When his unit ran out of juice, he hooked it up to the charger and the light came on as usual. He turned it back on and it quickly turned back off for no apparent reason. The charge light also went off. From that point on, he couldn't get it to turn on at all.

I figured it was more than likely a problem with his PSP since he didn't describe the problem to me very well at the beginning. I planned to test my battery in his PSP to see if it was a problem with his battery. Before I could do that, I had to get a little bit of a charge on my own battery, so I hooked it up to the charger.

Oops.

Now mine's in exactly the same boat. Maybe it's just that the charger just fried the battery somehow, but I have a feeling my PSP got totally bricked by it.

Now here's where the real fun comes in. I went to check out the warranty information of the PSP and found this:

THIS WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY IF THIS PRODUCT: (a) IS USED WITH PRODUCTS NOT SOLD OR LICENSED BY SCEA (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, NON-LICENSED GAME ENHANCEMENT DEVICES, CONTROLLERS, ADAPTORS AND POWER SUPPLY DEVICES) OR OTHERWISE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THIS PRODUCT; (b) IS USED FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES (INCLUDING RENTAL) OR IS MODIFIED OR TAMPERED WITH; (c) IS DAMAGED BY ACTS OF GOD, MISUSE, ABUSE, NEGLIGENCE, ACCIDENT, WEAR AND TEAR, UNREASONABLE USE, OR BY OTHER CAUSES UNRELATED TO DEFECTIVE MATERIALS OR WORKMANSHIP; (d) HAS HAD THE SERIAL NUMBER ALTERED, DEFACED OR REMOVED; OR (e) HAS HAD THE WARRANTY SEAL ON THE SYSTEM ALTERED, DEFACED OR REMOVED. THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER PRODUCTS SOLD AS IS OR WITH ALL FAULTS, OR CONSUMABLES (SUCH AS BATTERIES). PROOF OF PURCHASE IN THE FORM OF A BILL OF SALE OR RECEIPTED INVOICE WHICH IS EVIDENCE THAT THE UNIT IS WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD MUST BE PRESENTED TO OBTAIN WARRANTY SERVICE.

Acts of God? What the fuck? How do they define what constitutes an act of God? They could call almost anything an act of God to weasel out of their warranty obligations. :(

Sure, I'm not a fan of Sony by any means because it's well-known that they treat their customers like shit. This, however, has convinced me that they must be utterly destroyed.

That`s insane :(

Also, there are ways of un-bricking your PSP if it is indeed bricked. But i wouldn`t be an expert.

Come on Prak, insurance companies have been getting away with that one for years upon years, surely that mustn't come as a surprise to you. Will they come good on your warranty though? Or are they chalking this one up to the almighty?

Every warranty for just about every product on the planet has an "Acts of God" clause in it.

Also: Sounds like the AC Adapter itself was faulty. New Battery + new adapter = PSP working again.

Just for the record, I went through the warranty information for practically every electronic device I have. The only one with an "Acts of God" clause was my Sony DVD player.

Acts of God clause... I've never heard of it. But how would one say something was an act of god? What the impossible happening to you're PSP like a monkey grabbing it, dropping it in an elephant cage at the zoo so that it gets crushed into millions of pieces at the Zoo. Or you slipping on a toothpick at a baseball game and send it flying down onto the field at a 100 foot drop... Are those acts of god?
Can Someone please define this for me.

Acts of God is just for stuff like natural disasters. If there was a hurricane, or something like that. You should be a-okay!

I'm positive I'm not the only one who noticed that it was another Sony product with the "acts of God" clause...

Acts of God? What the fuck?

If they really meant "Natural disasters" then they should put THAT in there, not that God bullshit.

roflmao @ tchocky

acts of god is definately in things like home insurance and things like that. didn't know it'd be in electronic products. i'd say it'd mostly be in anything having to do with warranties/insurance.

here's an example of it.

ACT OF GOD [act of God] in law, an accident caused by the operation of extraordinary natural force. The effect of ordinary natural causes (e.g., that rain will leak through a defective roof) may be foreseen and avoided by the exercise of human care; failure to take the necessary precautions constitutes negligence , and the party injured in the accident may be entitled to damages. An act of God, however, is so extraordinary and devoid of human agency that reasonable care would not avoid the consequences; hence, the injured party has no right to damages. Accidents caused by tornadoes, perils of the sea, extraordinary floods, and severe ice storms are usually considered acts of God, but fires are not so considered unless they are caused by lightning.

The point is, you are really straining to find something wrong with anything Sony puts on the market.

Stop buying their stuff if you hate them so much.

The same thing happened to my friend when he tried to charge his PSP. He was all freaked out because it wouldn't turn on. He just used my charger and it worked. So basically you could try just using/buying a new charger?

That's interesting. I'll give it a try.

Also, Odin, you're really overrating my Sony hatred. I don't have a problem with most of their products. My problems are with their shitty business practices.

Bet it sucked that not only did Dell have a recall of Sony brand batteries, but Apple just did as well.

There's a Billy Connoly movie in which the insurance company pulls the "Act of God" clause on him;

So he sues God for damages (via God's 'mortal emissaries', the good old Catholic Church).

It's great.
