Do you like Sci-Fi RPGs like Xenosaga or Star Ocean 3, fuedalism RPGs like Legend of the Dragoon or Lord of the Rings, or a gentle Sci-Fi mixture with fuedalism such as FF 7,8 and 10?

Modern setting. Fantastic elements not emphasized.

The relative time period isn't really much of an issue to me. I mostly care about how creative it is. I like settings that feel as if they have their own very distinct history, culture, and inhabitants, and I hate ones that feel like they're just relying on some already created mythology.

But in any case, this should be in the RPG forum, since it is about RPGs, and in addition, you shouldn't double post just to add something. Edit it into your original post.

For one thing, none of those were RPGs. RPGs are defined by one big characteristic, that being what you do in the game effects what happens in the game. Take KotOR and KotOR 2 as examples. What you do defines your character, how other characters react to you, events in the game, dialogue, etc. Those games you mentioned have a set storyline, set dialogue, and NO role-playing aspects.

But I like the medieval RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn.

We know. (Thread 29666)

edit to answer the question: I personally like fantasy-steampunk settings. But settings like Star Ocean's "Our universe in about a thousand years" setting is pretty neat, too.

I don't know it's sort of like the futuristic Sci-Fi RPGs are more action based, like the enemy firing at you so you dodge them by doing aerial acrobatics and going to hyperspace. I mean that seems ore entertaining. Than some king sending you off on a mission.

Fuedalism is a system of government far more than a time period. It could easily exist in a far-future setting.

I'm more into games that don't even try to replicate a particular time period, but do things in a way that is consistent a plausible, relative to how that specific world/setting works. Wether this is superfically sci-fi/futuristic, modern, or resembling of earth's past, it is secondary.

I'm really not so picky with settings as far as that goes. What I'm more looking for is storyline elements and how they enteract with the characters in the setting. I have to honestly admit, I'll play any setting of RPG that you throw at me, if it's good enough to make me play for hours on end (Star Ocean the Second Story, Wild Arms, Thousand Arms...)....yeah. I'm a nerdy roleplayer like that and proud of it!!! RPGers unite ^^

^You could pretty much say the same for me only I dont get RPG's chucked at me. I have to search it myself.... Time consuming.... HOwever... the story line should be recognised within the playing of the game. Sometimes... some RPG's get a bit carried away and you end up not knowing what the RPG story line is trying to say. Take for example an old rpg... Breath of fire... You dont know what you are doing until around the end or even half way... That is what I dont like. the Elder Scroll series were worse. I was completely clueless on how to even win the game. It dragged on and on.... But the Majority these days dont drag. They all have a bisic plot and you can choose which to take. simple. They also end. not like Morrowind...

I prefer medieval RPG games because the scenery and creativity is much better, for example you can use all sorts of mythical creatures/beats and modern times only humans really. The plot is a big thing in any computer game and especially ofr an RPG because you are being a character and he has a story to tell. Generally these days the plots are simple but i like a bit more than simple, a b it more complex with more choices.

How good are the storylines on the FF games guys? I've never played a FF game so can someone just inform me about them plz...thanks

Only a good few of the FF games have good storylines. Other then that they are a bit repetative.

A mixture of Medieval stuff and Sci-fi like what they did in FFIV and FFX where the world for the most part is Medieval but then you run across Advanced Ruins or Fortress so far out there its like whoa. It looks like they plan to do that with FFXIII from what I have seen and read only time will tell on it though.

I'd say fudalism for the most part, but I do like sci-fi as well. Heres what I mean take a look at a list of RPG's I own and like:
Lord of the rings battle for middle earth
Lord of the rings the third age gamecube and GBA versions
Dungeon siege
Dungeon siege II
Final Fantasy 1-6
Pokemon
Fire Emblem
Tales of Symphonia
The legend of zelda series
Yu-gi-oh GX spirit caller
Lost Magic
Advance Wars
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Baten Kaiton Eternal wings and the lost ocean
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Medabots Infinity

Zelda? Yugioh? Advance Wars? You have absolutely no idea what an RPG is.

C'mon Prak we get it, it's just hard to correctly name it when Gamespot says it's a rpg, or an ARPG.

You miss the point. Only a complete idiot would ever list Advance Wars as an RPG. Same with Lost In Blue, as well as several others on that list. Even by the loosest standards, they cannot be called RPGs.

I'm only called barretboy because I liked the ring to it, and I'm sure there was a guy called something similar in the incredibles. I always thought Barret's gun arm was to far-fetched.

I suppose I would prefer the feudalism setting with a slight bit of sci-fi and some mythos. My favorite games are FF8, FF10, and ChronoCross by far. I'm not sure the plot setting is responsible for that though...

I don't exactly have a preferred setting for an RPG. However I do tend to like games with a darker theme to it such as the Shin Megami Tensei series and the first two Shadow Hearts game.
