I find that if I like the game, the music - whether good or bad - grows on me.

I think the same applies to music in general. Even if I don't like a particular band, if I listen to them long enough, the music grows on me.

I'd have to throw my lot in with... almost about every game that EA makes. This is the only reason why I'm grateful for the Xbox's generally-ignored feature of custom soundtracks.

I was mildly annoyed by some of the music in the first Drakengard, even though I loved the game. I'm so happy that they improved it in the second installment.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this one, but I hate the music in both Halo games. Also, I really hated the music in Ghost in the Shell: SAC for the PS2.

I'm certain that there's more, but I can't remember...

A few of the Bomberman Hero soundtracks are too bizarre for me. Namely, Realtor, (Which sounds like an apt theme music for becoming high. Lol.) Oropharynx, and Spiral. However, and overall, I eventually adapt to repetitive game music through constant exposure to it.

Oh. I just remembered. Captain Quazar's music is very bizarre in it's own right. Tracks 03, 05, and 09, respectively.

I fail to see how one can hum that song. O_o

I think it's an alright song, though I've over-listened it and don't listen to it much anymore. xD The orchestrated version is excellent, but the original in-game version makes my ears bleed.

So does a lot of 8-bit music, really. I can't listen to it casually like a lot of people can. In-game? Fine. But never on my playlist.

The game that drove me to music-induced tears was Wild Arms 3.

AUGH. That screeching MIDI violin! Just thinking about it makes my brain fill wil red foam.

Yeah, so? Should all the songs be good just because they sound good? Most of the greatest video game songs I've ever heard are connected with a memorable game moment. I like the fact that by listening to the songs I can go back to those places and memories.

phazonmasher, you need to revive your topics in the Requests section, Sarah has been touching them without YOUR permission! Yes, I'm aware of the rule, but that rule is ludicrous. After all, if some of the big name soundtracks that are on the site are posted here as megaupload links(in paticular, large soundtracks such as Wind Waker, Shadow the Hedgehog, and the complete rips of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie), it could save Sarah a lot of bandwidth, and thus a lot of money.

because they butcher the melodic symphonic style of western VGM's. they sound childish and whats most annoying are all the american fans pretending they are japanese and follow this shitty trends and devote themselves to it. Uh, no shit its different from western VGM's, ITS JAPANESE STUFF. I think games of stuff from JAPAN that's made in JAPAN are going to have the symphonic styles from, you guessed it, JAPAN, not western styles.

And way to generalize the entire anime fanbase. Only the worst of the worst 'dedicate their lives to it'. And being on a forums that's dedicated to a goddamn video game series (that's also made in Japan), you should hold your tongue when making a statement like that, because its very likely that not only are you making yourself look like a jerk, you're being hypocritical.

Look, i like anime. I know most of the games suck and their music is mediocre. But i'm not like "ZOMG ITZ AWESOME GIVE ME FANSUB TORRENT NAO!!!!!" So don't come on here and say "LMAO ALL U DRONEZ WATCHIN THIS SHIT PATHETIC LOLOLOLOL" and think that you're any better.

Altered Beast for Genesis had okay music in my view, but there are plenty of worse music tracks out there. Like "Labyrinth Zone" from Sonic 1... my ears!!! Most Sonic music (except for the Knuckles Rap songs) I like, but that zone I just...didn't.

I really hate Licenced music in Video games, like some new age rap/hip-hop/RNB we hear in many EA games... its just crap!
The only games i can remember with licenced music, that are enjoyable to the ears, are the GTA games. Thats because the music is supposed to come from the car's radio you drive and it was a great idea, plus you could hear many differend stations...

Oh that, and i absolutely hate all that crappy techno/rap (with lyrics cometimes) music that most new generation sonic games have.... Megadrive sonic games had great music style, the new musicians in Sonic Team need to be fired :p

Donkey Kong 64, from the AWFUL rap to all of the voices of DK's Relatives, to the dull stage music, yep the N64s death sentence right there, lol well not really but it was still pretty bad, "Cmon cranky, take it to the fridge!" that sums it up right there. Hope that wasnt too bad for a first post.
While a lot of the music was horrible (some that come to mind are Candy's place, the DK Rap, and OrangSprint), some of it was sheer brilliance. Some of the level music wasn't too good (Gloomy Galleon? No thanks.), but others (Fungi Forest, Hideout Helm, Crystal Caves) were great.

Though, it's all about opinion.

Also, XyCkO, I recently downloaded the Yoshi's Story soundtrack. I know it's horrible, but it's grown on me. It's not that bad after a while.

I loved that theme XD

I find the bgms in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire a bit obnoxious at times. Over half the time I would play, I'd just turn the volume all the way down.

There's a game I once played that had extremely repetitive tracks, I can't remember now but it stunk. Another one is Morrowind. Yeah it's a badass RPG and all, but the bgms get tiresome. =\
Last but not least, Streets of Rage for Sega Game Gear. I still have it, and it still sucks arse. )=

Omg NOOOOOOO!!!! Can't believe that... but it's understandable, yet those are some of my favorite soundtracks for nostalgic reasons. but shame on u for cursing them, the theming of the composition is awesome!! :(

Haha, that's hilarious. I don't like the original version, but I'm a fan of The Black Mages' arrangement that was in Advent Children. But if I knew someone that hummed that, I don't think I would like it either.

I would have to say Rygar on the (Nes) every song was horrible.
Save for one track (the one that's used in the caves), I'm with you on that. I remebered reading something stating that Rygar music was critically acclaimed, and the first thought that popped into my mind was "...uhm, why?"

LOLOLOL Friday The 13th was one of the dumbest games. Is there any way to beat that game?
Surprisingly, yes. I saw a tool-assisted speedrun of it, and long story short, you find the fire, run into Jason, and kill him again. And again. And again. After the third time, he'll stay dead.

... Or will he?! :O

I don't think there's any specific strategies to follow for that game though. Reading the author's notes for the TAS, the game is one of the most random games ever. Where the counselors are, the items that you get, even where Jason pops up are all completely random, so it's not surprising that most people haven't even killed Jason the first time around.

I'm sure someone will agree with me when I say all of the Knuckles levels music in Sonic Adventure 2 was really bad. Seriously, Sonic + any kind of rap = really bad game music.
I don't particularly care for the lyrics — then again, that can be said for most of the song lyrics in the Sonic series — but I like the melodies of the Knuckles tracks, especially Aquatic Mine and his remixed theme. But then again...

Cool topic, but I think "Birthday Cake" from Jet Set Radio Future HAS to be considered one of the most painfully annoying tracks off all time. [...] For a game with such great music, it seems an odd choice of track.
...I like this song. :P I agree with the fact that it sounds out of place in JSRF though; compared to "Fly Like a Butterfly" and "Teknopathetic", it really sounds like crap.

And now, for my contribution:

Most of the music in Phantasy Star III make me want to hurt something. It's odd too, because the title screen music is one of the best tracks that I've ever heard in a video game.

Edit: Also, whoever made the lone track for Hydlide needs a boot to the face. Battletoads style.

Ok I'll admit it, the opening song to "A boy and his Blob" is kind of cute.
However, that's really the only real music the game ever had! The rest
of the 'songs' consisted of random clicks, beeps, and whistles.
What's ironic is the fact that from this game came one of my favorite remixes from OCR: Cyborg Blobby OCRemix by Mazedude. The guy managed to take all those annoying clicks, beeps, etc and mixing it with the opening
theme create on of the most creative and amusing remixes I have ever heard.

I'm surprised to see some great soundtracks mentioned here. Diddy Kong Racing? Silent Hill 3? Banjo-Kazooie?! Those soundtracks were awesome!

Anyway, the soundtrack to Friday the 13th can drive anyone crazy. The game itself has like three different songs, one of which repeats as you play.

Over.

And over.

And over.

And over again.

However, there's a remix at OverClocked that's pretty awesome.

Other soundtracks I hated:

Yoshi's Island DS - I didn't HATE this soundtrack, exactly. However, compared to how awesome the soundtrack to the original Yoshi's Island was, Yoshi's Island DS was a HUGE let-down.

Donkey Kong Country 3 - Compared to the first two DKC games, this was just pitiful. Not nearly as memorable.

Sonic Spinball - Most of the soundtrack is great. There is one track, though, that makes me want to tear off my ears: the options menu.

There are probably more, but that's all I can think of right now.

Lord Brimstone

I agree with that bit about the cusom soundtracks. It's a widely ignored and great feature. Other systems should learn from it.

I think I appreciated it most when playing Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. I hardly like hip hop, and that game had an endless amount of it.

The most annoying soundtrack (off the top of my head) is half of Jet Set Radio Future. I say half because half of it is excellent, but the latter half is completely absurd.

I love FFX's music, but "Cloister of Trials" can burn in hell.

Dunno if anyone's ever played The Hunt for Red October for the NES, but that is quite possibly the worst "music" ever put in a game. Here, I found someone playing it on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCAG1ilw_sM

Wait till you get by the intro to the actual game. If you thought the music in the intro was bad, just wait. The music is so bad, there is actually a way to turn it off with the NES controller(hit pause and A). Try to watch the whole video without turning your speakers off. I had a headache by the time 3 minutes rolls around.

90% of the music from FFX-2, and all of the music of FFXII ,except the remade Nobuo tracks and kiss me goodbye

I absolutley agree, although I like the piano theme opening of X-2 very much. It kinda gives false hope, right?

I also wanted to add something else... I apologieze in advance for what I'm going to say, but... Although Chrono Cross is my favorite soundtrack ever, there is one tiny black spot in it.... and it happens to be the random encounter (which is not so random at all, actually). Is it just me, or is that the most annoyng mellody ever? I know there is a whole lot of annoying stuff, but this... this is just like somebody is playing a violin with my nerves instead of wires.

But you must admit that the music was fair in the better and more important parts of the game. It kinda matches the annoyance of the levels it plays on.

I think the same applies to music in general. Even if I don't like a particular band, if I listen to them long enough, the music grows on me.

It's a bit of a challenge to come up with a piece of music that genuinely annoys me, let a alone an entire soundtrack as others have done. Although if repetition is the case, I can certainly go with a few of the earlier FFs.

Oh. Persona 3's soundtrack impresses me not at all with it's mixture of J-pop and Hip-hop. It's terrible.

Meh... Sonic isn't what he used to be, and neither is the franchise. A Tragic fate to be following Crash, Alex Kidd, Bonk, and so many others... On the bright side, he ain't Bubsy.

One game soundtrack I hated had to be three stooges for the NES. And it's bloody obvious why... they had only one track throughout the entire game!

however, sotn was just an extra in dracula X, whereas the main game is the remastered rondo of blood, of which im criticizing its score.

Ghostbusters on NES, same tune over and over again!

Yeah I agree with Sonic tunes. I'll usually find the odd track I like in the newer games but it isn't the same as the older games.

Sonic CD (Japanese Soundtrack) is one of my favorite soundtracks from any video games. The Levels Past and Future remixes were well executed and then Sega of America decided to make a shit soundtrack in comparison which didn't sound like a 16 bit Sonic game whatsoever.

As a Final Fantasy XI player, I find the Campaign track very irritating as it is now scarred into my head!

I use to listen to VG Music almost every single day of the week while running in my basement but it was almost driving me insane so my dad had turn off the music for a little awhile. It helps me a lot that I am taking a break from video game music but I still want to listen to some more if I get the chance and repeat the experience that I had in the game in real life (Not that I will start something like Columbine now). I got get my mind in focus because it is almost difficult for me to forget some themes and also my dad say that video game music isn't real music. I don't really agree with this! Ontarama OST. Well, it's not so bad for a cute japanese game, but for a music game SUCKS! I don' understand how can this game have size 131 MB when it uses crappy midi songs. Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan was 64 MB which has songs with vocals, so how does this happens with Ontarama? And by the way, the game is good only for an hour. After that it gets boring. Maybe because it's not as challenging as other music games.
