Well I have never ever played a second of Final Fantasy IX. For some reason or another, I never got swept up in the hype and it followed the coat tails of Final Fantasy VIII so closely that I ended up missing the boat altogether and never really thinking twice about.

But, as usual, the first of the month means the princess and I order up a new game and some new DVDs to watch, and Final Fantasy IX is on the list this time around. I'm actually quite excited, because hindsight allows me to see where the Final Fantasy series has gone beyond this particular title, so I'm looking forward to some old-fashioned Final Fantasy roots (I'm told and have read that this game is a fine example of that).

I was actually just wondering if many people out there like me are late comers to this title??

Oh I am so jealous of you for two reasons.

1. You get to experience FFIX with a fresh mind of playing it.

2. You have a FFIX that doesn't have a fatal scratch on Disk 3. =[

I payed quite a lot for it actually. Its in very very low supply in Australia, because I forked out $69.99AUD for it. There are quite a lot of PlayStation 2 games out for much much cheaper then that :).

yeah, the beginning might seem somewhat lame. But trust me, this game gets intense and keeps you playing for hours.

I'd say the beginning is one of the best in the series imho. The kidnap really sets the mood. And yeah, I envy you, because you'll get to see places like Dali and such, and discover things for the very first time.

Well not necessarily the beginning.

(Going to keep this spoiler free)

But the second disc, if I remember correctly, was the most boring part. But then, the game really heats up.

This really recalls my love for the game. Just beautiful sceneries, like the first view you get on the enormous city-in-a-castle Lindblum. <3

In my opinion, the first few hours are the best, it gets a little boring when you leave the first continent.

however it's all good.

Oh, Mr. Bunniesworth, welcome to the club.

Here's a tip --- be sure to poke around in all sorts of places for treasure. Unlike something like a Final Fantasy X/X-2, treasure is all around in this game, and not necessarily in treasure chests. The good thing is that the ! icon will guide your way to treasure. You'll want as much treasure as possible to get a certain bonus later on. (It's not really anything major, but it's nice to have.)

I'm a really late bloomer to this game as well, only have gave it the first go a month or so ago. I played through once and got up to the final boss and didn't really do much except breeze through in just under 36 hours. But on my second playthrough, I'm at about 70 hours and almost at the middle of Disc 3. I've already completed a great chunk of the side-quests and goodies, and I have to say that this is still rising up the list of my favorite Final Fantasy games.

Also, I've got a used copy, and a brand new one. Someone want it? For money of course.

I must say, even though it doesn't have the awesome storyline like FFVII and VIII, the game has a certain feel to it. It just makes everything comfortable around you. I once had a friend (who indeed was kinda geekish) who said: ''Playing FFIX is like using relaxation drugs'' Ofcourse a bit overkill, but I know what he means. Great game for hollidays and stuff, cuz once you start playing it'll be no smooth sailing to stop. Very much worth the buying.

Good to hear, it was and still is my favorite FF.

Overall i thought it was a joy to play. It gets away from the FFVII/FFVIII teen angst characters and includes characters and designs that may be familiar with fans of the older games.

Enjoy :)

It is one of the most enjoyable games I've played, with a terrific storyline and memorable characters. =) To say it in a nutshell.

And although I personally enjoyed FFVII and VIII on the PC, I have to agree, they did have some major problems associated with the controls, the save system and the performance in general. And the MIDI music soundtracks mentioned on that page.

I must say, I noticed that. God through-out the first scene with Vivi and his phoney ticket there were cards, gil and items everywhere, and you can't see the buggers either!! Enjoying it thus far though.

The pace of, at least the battles seems really sluggish though, even when you vamp the speed up to its fastest. That's kind of annoying, but its adjustment I suppose I'll just have to get used to.

I also started playing these games late. My first FF was 10 and I started that about a year after it came out :-P. Then I played 9 (and I must say, after the first 10 minutes I turned the PS2 off) but if you stick with it it gets very good in my opinion. Then my friends introduced me to 7 and thats possibly my favorite game of all time :-P. But back on topic, I'm also a latecomer to this game and other FFs but I don't think it matters since the games are so much fun :-).
