I would have to agree with you on that. I think you can tell after you play the game for the first time when you can't even finish the first level >_<

Another I'd like to add: Legendary Wings for the NES, hard as **** shoot'em up by Capcom. Enemies will fly onto the screen in a split second and you can't really react fast enough to kill them and dodge their bullets.

Kinda reminds me of Darius Twin on the SNES too, but at least that was a little more bearable.

wonder if "OoT" means Ocarina of Time (Zelda)....

That Naruto game for the GC. In the final mission, you have to play some ungodly number of battles. I think it's like 99 of every character vs. every other character. Okay I beat Super Ghosts N' Goblins and Super Ghouls N' Ghosts in one day, but this challenge absolutely takes weeks of constant playing to beat.

So ridiculously hard

LOL, I had to get this one just because I couldn't finish the normal version. But now this one has an even harder mode added to it. My problem with DMC3 for me is the controls because I was so use to playing DMC, which was a big difference when I picked this game up.

That one is mostly easy if you dodge and use Trickster a lot, or just play the first level until you get enough orbs to max your stuff out. Otherwise it ranks in toughness with God Mode God of War.

Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne, the dungeon are long, random fights are numerous (3x compared to the average FF), ailments and death speals are numerous and some of the bosses are horrible, especially the fight against the Matador which is the hardest boss fight I have ever faced (and my list includes DMC3 in DMD, Sephiroth in KH and KH2, FEAR, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, FF6). If the game didn't have a newgame +, I would never have the courage to restart it.

Undead Line for Genesis was a monster of a game. it's tough

Most of the Contra games can kick your face in too if you

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory.
The abilities you gained weren't permanent and you lost them if you died, so if you had a good collection you had to save frequently. Saving wasn't free and it was like 100 coins or something which wasn't cheap. The save points were only in the hub parts and you couldn't save during levels. So if you died and lost your abilities you had to either reload which was probably awhile ago, or just suffer with less abilities. Some of the abilities were quite essential like Maximo couldn't swing his sword twice in succession without the corresponding ability. Also the game had a lot of difficult platforming which was a major cause of death and losing your abilities. It also created a situation where you would die fighting a boss and lose your abilities, but since you still had more lives you would have to keep fighting the boss without your abilities. The game for some reason assuming that if you couldn't defeat it with a full arsenal that you would somehow do better without it. Frustration was my traveling companion.

The Killzones were ridiculously difficult for me, and aside from them being awful games in the first place (why they are popular is beyond me) they were confirmedly designed to expect you to die all over the place, and that irritated me beyond belief.

KOTOR the Original had the 3 puzzles that were ridiculously annoying that made me buy a strategy guide almost immediately, stupid Korriban and Manaan puzzles...

Aside from that... pretty much every RTS because I hate how it's about Micromanagement and not Tactics, sigh... <_>.

Racing, Role Playing Gaming, & Vehicle Simulation. Even those whom are exceptional in a Platform/Action Adventure Game like Devil
May Cry 4 will still struggle with some levels, & attaining criteria's, as every new challenge pushes the Gamer to give all to achieve
a certain status. E.g. Beating Bosses, without being heavily inflicted with attacks.
As far as Dragonball Z: Budokai 3 goes, I can still hold my ground. I once used Gogeta (Super Saiyan 4) against Omega Shenron, &
it took a lot of concentration from me to overcome the battle, in both offense, & defense. And it was damn hard.

Yeah Contra 2 for the NES was very hard but the Arcade version is even worse. You will die in that game, and you have to be a contra god to beat the game without cheating and without using a continue.

After finishing the game, there is somewhat of a side storyline (I assume added for re-play value). I simply could not finish it... I think I made it to the last area of it, but I kept getting killed by the Gnosis there and I simply gave up. To this day, I have no idea what happens after that although I'm curious... but yeah... that game was hard at times.

As for my personal choice for this thread, I'd have to say Zelda II. That is the only Zelda game I have never finished and I will never go back to attempt to. The development for that game was utterly retarded. I mean, who makes you start the whole game over again if you forgot something within the first five minutes of the game? That game was utter FAIL.

one time, i had to use a guid just to see WTF i was supposed to do.

Un modded STALKER - Clear Sky, purely due to the absolute tedium of the beginning and end part of the game.

Forst few hours you roam around a swam, out gunned, vastly out numbered and have to pick off people one at a time untill you can scrape together enough for a real gun and some body armor.

The game then gets deceptively easy for the next 30 hours or so. Then, unless you've spoiled yourself, you enter the end area of the game....and find out you can't go back for any of your stuff. From this point on, it's purely a war of attrition. Enemies are thrown at you in stupid scripted events for the next few hours, and unless you've brought everything you've amassed with you, you are fucked. About 20 medkits, 40 bandages, and 3,000 rounds of ammo into the end game, I was spent, going from quick save to quick load, trying to take out people in power armor with a knife.

If I ever play the game again, I'll know to bring 60 med kits, 100 bandages, and at least 6,000 rounds of ammo.

For me, its gotta be Ikaruga on the DC. Its a great game but I just find it so difficult. I generally think modern games have generally become far more 'easier' than the old skool 2D games of the 90s

oh definately, games are much easier now with the endless checkpoints, respawn points, basically infinite lives, and so freakin many powerups. that's why i occasionally break out my NES still.

You just have to know where to look...but, yeah, games do seem to get easier.

Have you tried 'Elemental Gearbolt' for the PS2?
It's pretty hard...

Also, while not 'hard', but fun and creative is 'Blast Works' for the Wii.

The Dark Spire (DS) - Dying a ton when you first play, and then having to get money (and dying in the process) to revive your fallen comrades makes this game really tough. I love it though. :)

Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom - On Hard mode, it's really hard to stay alive because of all the status effects that you get.

A game that requires me to have coherence and be focused? Any RTS, metal gear solid 2/3 were pretty difficult, especially Boss in MGS 3 even on the last difficulty setting.

Not many hard RPGs, if you keep armor and levels to a decent sufficiency then you should have a smooth ride through most of them.

Dead or Alive 4. Button reaction AI is a known horrible design choice. Hit punch BOOM counter throw. Start to press throw, BOOM counter throw your throw. Then theres the last boss, hmm lets make a clone of the best character, make her do a nonstop 19 hit combo thats unblockable, oh and why not throws that do 50% damage!

Ninja Gaiden 1, hard but kinda fair most of the time.

Ninja Gaiden 2, cheap. wonky camera compliled with monsters who only throw/suicide attack/explosive attacks lol.

Armored Core 4 Answer. Easy on normal, but the missions "Spirit of Mother Will" and "Base Destruction" on Hard were rediculous. Mother Will is the thing on the game cover as well as in the trailers the city size mech, having to fight it and a Armored Core while Mother will cover fires it was crazy. "Base Destruction" was worse though. After you pick the bad ending where you kill 10million people (creepy mission by the way, the guy was enjoying it waaaayyyy to much) you have to fight off 5 enemy Armored Core's all at once.

Xenogears had alot of hard moments but its still my fav game of all time. Like Calamity in the begining of the game, or Redrum in the sewers ect.

Front Mission (ALL OF THEM) the series is pretty hard lol, at least for me. Love the 3rd one though.

Killzone 2 on modes above normal, holy crap is this game difficult. Epic single player though.

Disgaea 3, kinda hard, you really have to think outside the box in this series.

(This spot is reserved for Demons Souls )

The hardest game i ever played would have to be Chakan The Forever Man for the Sega Genesis, it's hailed as the hardest game ever made and they never bothered putting in an ending because they assume nobody would ever beat it lol and after that i'll say The Immortal for the Genesis and X-Men 1 and 2 for the Genesis and Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters on the hardest difficulty on the Genesis once again lol those are my top 5.

As stated on Wikipedia
Upon defeating this second set of levels, Chakan is treated to an ending in which his curse is not lifted. After the credits roll for some time, he is allowed to fight an extremely difficult enemy boss (consisting of an H.R. Giger looking creature on a throne carried by what appear to be midgets). The player only gets one try. Doing this without the aid of an emulator with the ability to save and load game states is virtually impossible.

If the player succeeds at this task, they receive the "real ending" which was unfortunately not implemented by the game developers. It consists of the hourglass background used in the plot exposition screens but without any text.

A sequel was planned and developed somewhat by Ed Annunziata's studio AndNow, but no new information about the project has been released since 2001. It was planned to be released for as many current platforms as possible, according to Ed Annunziata himself in an interview with SegaFans during May 2001.

Much of the work on the Chakan sequel was later absorbed into the 2002 game Blood Omen 2, as discovered by fans of the series.

Chakan the Forever Man... gods, I remember that game. I also remember getting extremely frustrated with it as well. Believe it or not, I still possess my copy of this game... sitting next to my Alisia Dragoon and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Games.

Agree with CHC; game is prob the hardest of the Contra series.

Sheesh. This topic brings back unpleasant memories...
Oh well. Here's my list:

Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES): The first video game I ever played that really tried my patience.

Gradius III (SNES): The North American version was watered down but it's still frustrating as hell.

Gradius V (PS2): I've lost track of the number of times I cursed at my TV while playing this. It doesn't help that the game taunts you every time you lose all of your lives.

Contra: Hard Corps (GEN): It still makes me mad that the Japanese version had a health bar that was removed for the North American release...

Double Dragon II (GB): The bosses in this game were ridiculously cheap. It almost feels like the programmers were playing a prank on you.

Fail design doesn't count for me.

There's a LOT of games that control like crap or just suck so they're hard to beat.

Unless it's something game breaking, like a camera on PCP or a shoot-em-up with bad lag.
