Why does Zidane have a double ended sword? In ff7 and ff8 the main character has a proper sword but Zidane got given a strange double ended on. Its just not right.

Same reason he has a tail.

***Is This A Spoiler? Mark it anyways...***

Zidane's character was that of a thief, and thieves are more skilled with daggers and such like. At the start of the game, Zidane carried twin daggers in both hands. You could upgrade these daggers to form a twin bladed weapon. It's just an extension from the norm. Besides, things get more interesting if the main character doesn't carry a huge sword (Steiner is the main swordsman of the group in the game.)

It is the same weapon that Serge has in Chrono Cross and in that game the call it a Swallow.

Probably square wanted the main character to be different from the past FF's so they made the sword look different, and of course added the tail.
