I'm just wondering, did I start to late? I'm at the part just before you enter Midgar and I have a Blue and Green Chocobo, but it won't let me breed them because they are "too young", both are S-Class.

The story has not been advanced since they were born. I started the sidequest (capturing the first chocobos) right after the story told me to go to Midgar to fight Hojo. The only other ingame sidequest I have done is the Wutai one. Will defeating the Weapons/Sunken Gelenka "age" my chocobos?

Wow, I never had this problem.... I guess you could just wait till your more father in the game.

try speaking to the chocobo sage, which you may not be able to get to yet. Maybe you need his info before breeding them further?

otherwise just wait, because it's not connected to the story at all.

I'm on disc three now, when I first got on the disc I mated my blue and green for a black, but now I can't mate my black with anything.

Go to icicle area(Or whatever that snowy place is) and catch a wonderful chocobo. Race it and the Black one to rank S then breed them with a zeio nut. You can find zeio nuts on goblin island to the north east of the map.

Yes I have that. I was meaning that my black one is considered too "young". I can't really advance the story much further.

You basically have to do something else in the meantime and wait for the chocobo to 'grow up'

It will grow up if you wander around for a while. Im not so sure how long it takes. An hour? Half an hour?

Well...try racing them at the gold saucer or complete another part of the story or something. Take them out for a ride or feed them more greens.

I always have this problem when it comes to Chocobo's age.

I usually just sit outside the Chocobo Ranch and leave my PlayStation on and go watch TV for an hour.
Or go level up in N. Crater. Anything works, as long as your gameplay time is still running.
You don't need to do any sidequests or anything.

i don't know the inner workings of the game, but since you can completel the quest after reaching disk 3, i'd say that it's just a matter of waiting or doing something else until the game decides they can be bred.
I'm sure it's as simple as a timer that has to be a certain value before they can be bred. Possibly attached to the 'playtime timer' or 'steps counter' if there is one in ff7
