What is a good Free MMORPG besides WoW on a private server?

TK
07-05-2006, 04:20 PM
Well WoW isn't free, so I don't know why you are saying besides WoW.

There are no good free MMORPGs. Creating and maintaining something that huge takes a hell of a lot of money, and the only way it's possible really is if the the players are all paying for it. Any free one you find is likely to be garbage, I'd wager.

I don't know why you'd want to play those things anyway though. They will suck the hours of life away into oblivion and you will be dead to everything else. =(

Well WoW isn't free, so I don't know why you are saying besides WoW.
I remember some weird guy added me to MSN or AIM and was talking about WoW and how he was 1337 at it, to which I replied that I didn't like the idea of continually paying for a game even after I have paid the initial 40 or something along those lines. Then he said that you could play it on private servers for free, which is what I guess Alvinz is talking about. Here is a list of them IN CASE YOU ARE INTERESTED: http://www.wowstatus.net/serverlist.php

I`d say Guild Wars but it only held my attention for a week. Still, MMORPGs are very tedious and repetitive for me anyway.

Guild Wars isn't an MMORPG... But lets not talk about definitions about genre.

RO has a bunch of private servers. Try that.

really? O_o please explain. i'm a total noob if i coudln't see the diffrence of that. :p

here are my "ideas" of what an mmo is

basically, its like an rpg, where you make your own character, get to choose between jobs, and lvl up. all done online only.

you could probably IMAGINE diablo II as an mmo, but since you CAN play offline, it doesn't count.

gw CANNOT be played offline. also, nearly every mmo source/authority categorizes it as an mmo. (like g4/techtv lol) so what are you smoking, mog?

Alvinz

well silk is technially a MMO not an MMORPG because they say they are a MMO. Im currently playing it'

Yea ive tried RO playing on a private server. It was really fun coz i played with my brother and a couple of friends. Until the server thing got scrwed and the backupfiles didn't work and i lost my character :(

Prak

Tact, most of Guild Wars is played in instances. You only see other people in the central areas, so "massively multiplayer" just doesn't seem very applicable. On top of that, the ability to hire NPCs to work with you further degrades the multiplayer aspect.

Also, Diablo II could NEVER be counted as an MMORPG because the number of players it can support in a single game is far too low.

Hours of life away into oblivion? Thats only for computer geeks. Playing maybe 1 or 2 hours a week is a-ok!

Prak

But if you play that little, you don't really get your money's worth out of it, so it's pointless.

One or two hours a week? Are you serious? Nobody plays Warcraft one or two hours a week. You might resolve to do that, and that will crumble as soon as you realize that all you have to do to go up another level is kill fifty more of some green things or whatever and that will only take until 3 A.M.

As Prak said, if by some miracle you can regulate yourself so well that you only play one or two hours a week, you'd be ripping yourself off. If that's all you want to do, just get Neverwinter Nights or something and play online with people occasionally. There's no reason to play an MMORPG unless you are going to spend hours on end at it.

Very true. I tried it and hated it almost immediately.

Still, it might make a decent enough introduction to MMORPGs, even if it isn't very good. I'd recommend City of Heroes over GW as a jumping-on point, but it carries a monthly fee.

Okay. Guild Wars is for a fact online only. How does that make it an MMORPG though? Adventure Quest, I believe you've heard of that game, is online only as well. Would you count that as an MMORPG? Granted you don't play with anyone else in Adventure Quest (thus removing the MM part), it is an online RPG.

Second, a MMORPG would be defined as a game where everything takes place in one world. By one world, I mean one playing field. This is not to be confused with the various servers that WoW or FFXI host btw. Diablo and Guild Wars work almost exactly the same way: Central Hub -> P2P Hosted Game (though I think Blizzard actually hosts the server for the game.)

What I mean by Central Hub is that Guild Wars will have a server with an instance of the said town or outpost (Lion's Arch for example). Players connect to Lion's Arch and thus will be connected to every single person who is connected to that central hub. However, it is simply a central hub and no real player interaction can be done except for trading, partying up and chatting.

Once you form a party and leave town, you are no longer connected to a server hosted by Guild Wars. Instead, you will still be connected to the Guild Wars network but only for transmitting data such as EXP, inventory, friend's list, etc etc. Now this becomes more like Diablo, you're now connected to a party member's server OR you're the host of the server itself. You have no real connection to anyone outside of that instance area, only by whisper functions and that's it. Your friend, who is in the same zone but because of separate instances, does not exist. It's not an MMORPG because there's nothing massively multiplayer about it. If you want to define this game as an MMORPG, you can describe Halo 2 as an MMOFPS or Burnout Revenge as an MMO-Arcade Style Racer and so on.

And if you want to consider other things that would not make this game an MMO (though it's more of an opinion or anything).

1. This game does not have the detailed stats of a character that would make it an MMORPG.

2. The longevitiy of this game is very short and features little to no end game. An RP character can only be leveled up for so long before he can no longer advance in any part of the game any more.

3. The game is based on earning skills for your account and not for your character in general. This cannot make it an MMORPG due to the fact that you're not leveling up a character (which is the basis of an MMORPG) but rather upgrading your account as a whole to take part in PvP.

4. The game is heavily based on PvP. The PvP system is not based on your character advancement through the story at all. In fact, you can create a PvP character which instantly makes him or her level 20 from the get go. No penalities from doing this either.

5. The makers of Guild Wars, while saying that it shares similar aspects to an MMORPG, perfers to label it as a CORPG or (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Which, with the nature of how Guild Wars is, is all true. (Source (http://www.guildwars.com/support/faq/default.php#details))

:( Since when was that Odin quality? ; ;

Anyways, it's not free if it's illegal... and for all intents and purposes, I relinquish my previous post about jumping on a private server with RO. <.<

To further extend the whole Guild Wars thing. No, you cannot use the same access code twice. So asking your friend (who probably spent the 50 bucks getting the game, lets hope lets hope) for his code isn't going to help and looking for an access code that someone that released on the net (for some stupid reason, lets hope lets hope) isn't going to help either when thousands of "Lionheart Reborns" are trying to input the same access code.

Then again, if one didn't know squat about how to hack their own Guild Wars account... they probably wouldn't do that. :3 Thus, stfu.

Needless to say... Guild Wars is not an MMORPG <.< Thus, go play Maple Story or something.

You can buy marijuana from dealers on the street. That's not legal. Same principle, except it's probably worse because the company that made the game is getting ripped off, thus there is a victim involved.
