I like certain bands from almost all the different styles of metal except "power metal", "glam metal", and the infamous "nu-metal."

I hate how overly sub-categorized the genre gets.

Sepultura, Nailbomb, and later Soulfly, all have one thing in common, Max Cavalera is a fucking god!

Agreed, I do like older Fear Factory, Ill Nino, Chimera, but thats about as main stream metal as I like to go.

Chimera kick ass mate. I think slipknot, Lamb of God and Killswitch are great aswell no matter what anyone says but I can see why you guys dont like them, its a pretty good opinion. Mega Death are probably my favorite old metal band. But yea pantera "Walk" is one of my favorite songs in the mosh pit by far. Also soulfly "back to the primative", oh mate, I fell in love with that song the first time I heard it. I like Trivium as well, but the only album I like really is Acendancy.

Got to agree. Most drummers for death/black metal bands are far better than Joey Jordinson, it's only because Slipknot are so mainstream and Joey, for a mainstream drummer, is pretty good, but compared to most other metal drummers he is pretty damn average.

Well, Dany Carey from Tool, is one of the top notch drummers, up there with Neil Pert (or whatever) from Rush, Paul Mazurkiewicz from Cannibal Corpse is fucking untouchable, his grinds are more than perfection, tempo changes are flawless.

The only mainstream metal I like is probably Unearth and Norma Jean.
I basically listen to all these Arizona bands, because there is a lot of good music here.

In Flames, and Shadows Fall is also good 'mainstream' metal.

As far as Joey Jordison being an "awesome" drummer, is completely laughable. Listen to some real metal.

(However, I like System of a Down quite a bit... Not sure if I'd classify them as 'real' metal, but, I find them to be a pleasurable listen.)

The only mainstream metal I have really been introduced to is whatever is on Headbanger's Ball.
Which is mostly all crap on there.

I have an incredible new-found respect for System of a Down, tbh, one of the few 'mainstream' metal bands I really like. Just saw them at Ozzfest, and they put on a really great show. I'm not really sure why people have so much against them, and feel they should immediately thrust them into the throes of nu-metal horridness. I think they're one of the most original metal bands out there today.

MEtal is awesome. I like listening to more Progressive Stuff, like Symphony X or DragonForce. But the all-time winner is definately Dream Theater. Their line-up completely ROCKS. Literally.

System is ok, but I don't like all the silly/party/druggie lyrics. Malakian has done some pretty good guitar riffs though. Still, in terms of their current material the Hypnotize/Mesmerize thing (or is that reversed) seemed full of filler songs and could have easily just been compacted down to one, more impactful release.

I listen to metal a bit more sparsely these days. My most recent metal listening has been with Testament, and Lamb of God (I don't care if the rest of you don't like them, I listen to this shit mostly for the guitars and their guitarists are great) and Meshuggah before them. So basically, nothing new.

Also, I recently watched some Guitar World video where the guys from God Forbid were teaching people how to play some riffs off of their current album and they were sounding really awesome so I checked out the album again (I already had it but it was pretty much unlistened to) but I still wasn't impressed with the whole band effort. Cool guitar riffs though for sure.

System of a Down sucks.

I would elaborate but I am already tired of typing.

I just checked out Slayer's upcoming album and I thought it was pretty good. Definitely their best since Divine Intervention in my opinion. It's the same old Slayer though, so if you're the type that hates how they never change too much in terms of lyrical content and riff styles etc don't waste your time checking it out.

People always associate metal with anger, and being pissed off, and in actuality, it's the only genre that doesn't piss me off. I'm tired of talentless bands/artists hopping onto the latest craze of what's "in", and making tons of money they don't deserve by playing off everyone'e idiocy. That's probably why I not only don't watch MTV or VH1, but literally can't.

Anyway, that aside, I used to be into alot of Thrash Metal like Metallica, Pantera, Killswitch: Engage, etc, and while I still dig Metallica, I've grown to other subgenres.

I'm very much into Progressive Metal, and to a lesser extent, Power. Bands like Symphony X, Dream Theatre, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Epica, Kamelot (a couple albums), some Beyond Twilight, Evergrey, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Iron Maiden, Nightwish, Persuader, Savage Circus, and most recently, some of The Black Mages. Also, a couple of amazing local bands that have caught my eye are Outworld and Magistral. Both have amazing talent and potential. And not a local band, but a new one, you should definately check out Dark Empire.

I also dig a few Death/Black Metal bands. Children of Bodom, a few Dimmu Borgir songs/riffs, Insomnium (more Doom Metal), and Kalmah (just got into them).

Thats utter nonsense...Almost all of my favourite metal bands come from scandinavia and similar countries...most of them sing in their native tongue, which i don't understand...but i still love the band.

Love metal as a genre doesn't exist. Troll metal I advise you to listen to Finntroll (album: Jaktens Tid). Viking metal try out Amon Amarth (album: Once From the Golden Hall). As for Christian metal, I wouldn't try it, though I do know of a semi-Christian Black metal band, Arcturus, who have had Hellhammer (of Mayhem fame) drumming for them.

Try Crimson thorn, it's the notorious "white metal" genre i.e Christian black metal lol
