Well, i'm not the RPG fan, and i decided to buy FF X seeing as it was a 'platinum' and going for cheap so i thought i'd give it ago.
A good choice that was; (although the battle system is sh*ting me)
I'm 24 hrs into the game and enjoying every part of it. And i've had this game for about 3 months now., which is taken me ages to complete (unlike adventure games which are short-er :P)
Its taking forever to get through this game and im wondering how long on average does it take you to finish a FF game? I'm thinking of getting FF X-2 when i eventually finish this but then i hear FF VII is not a miss..
Well the main thing i love is the music - can't get any better

FF's music (from all of the games), in all of their synthesized and loopified glory, are also among my favorite soundtracks, too. ^^ You might also want to check out the symphonic/piano collections one day if you ever get so interested. :)

Speaking for myself...

On average, it takes me anywhere from 40 to 60 hours to finish a game, over the course of three weeks to a month --- or longer, depending on how busy life gets during the time. Right now I'm playing FF6, about 25 hours in, and it's taken me about 16 days to get that far. The first FF I finished was FF9, which took me 60 hours over about 2 1/2 weeks to finish. FF10 was about 45 hours over a month to finish.

If you do end up liking FF10 a lot, yeah, go ahead and give FFX-2 a try just for the whole "continuing adventure" thing. You might find its style a little more akin to what you like, actually. I personally didn't care for X-2 (sold the game back to the store a few months later), but I know a lot of people liked it for whatever reason... ;)

As for FF7, I actually do reccommend giving it a try. I love that game. I know they say graphics don't make the game, but sometimes it does take a little while to get past the transition from the smooth, fancy graphics of FF10 and jump back 10 years to FF7's blocky graphics. As a whole, in terms of gameplay and characters, now that I think of it, I actually do like FF10 more than FF7, too. But really, I like them both. ^^

Actually... I like them ALL. XD

If you want to choose another FF game to play, just read the summaries and look at the images and styles of each game. Each of them is different, so there might be a style that you lean towards. Personally, my favorite of all is FF9, followed closely by FF6.

At the last save point I was about sixty-three hours in. I had done most of the side quests (not on the international version) and done a signifigant amount of toughening up. You'll notice that almost all Final Fantasies take much more time than the average action/adventure game, so make sure you have time to devote to the game, or it won't be nearly as fun as it should be.

I'll say that as long as you have nothing against a storyline with female characters X-2 will be just fine. It's a pretty good way to get introduced to the series, even it's radically different than its predecessors.

but then i hear FF VII is not a miss..

Well it depends what you want in a Final Fantasy game. I strongly recommend you to look elsewhere when it comes to VII. VII can either be a perfect hit or a complete miss. If you just play it and don't think about the plot or the characters you'll have a great time, but if you look at it critically, than you won't have much fun past the first city. It's up to you, but I strongly suggest moving on to VI or IX.

The music is great, especially on VIII and VI. Those two step out beyond the other games in that respect.

That actually sums it up perfectly.

I highly recommend that one. One of the most addictive games in the series IMO. It's fast become one of my favourites, despite the fact that when I first tried it out I wasn't sure if I was going to be keen on it or not =)

the sprites don't mean nothing.... i think life & death is a more serious subject than both VIII & VII's emo plots

9 is my favourite but ive never clocked up a large playtime on it (40 hours max?)

now on my 2nd FF10 playthrough, i clocked up 80+ hours which is way more than any other FF.

the last time i played 7, i spent a few hours getting clouds str stat to 255 and still bested it in under 20 hours. (obviously the strength of my attack helped me get through fights quicker after that)
