I hadn't played FFVII in years until recently. I recon I last played it 4 years ago.

Anyway, I recently quit World of Warcraft after reaching rank 14 and decided to play through the Final Fantasy games again. I love the pace of the games and how much you can achieve in such a short space of time!.. anyway, the point of my post is a different strategy I have adopted since last playing the game -

Previously i'd balance my 3 characters out with materia as I progress.. lets use Cloud, Barret and Aeris as the example 3 characters. Cloud would have lightning linked with all, Barret would have fire linked with all, Aeris would have ice and restore linked to all. I'd even most things out equally like spreading the summon materias out fairly between all the characters etc.

This time around though im doing it different, and it is a great fun and very efficient way of playing. I have currently just got the Tiny Bronco and my next objective is The Temple of the Ancients. This is my battle strategy -

Barret is my tank. He takes all the damage. He has no magic and no summon materia equiped at all, afterall, if I want him to take as much damage as possible, I do not want the -% hp debuff that comes with magic and summon materias! Yup, Barret is my tank and he has only independant and command materia equipped. 'Cover' is one of the most important, along with 'hp+' materia to boost his hp. He has random command + independant materia for the bonuses to dexterity, vitality, luck etc. I shove him on the back row and give him 'Long Range' materia and 'Counter'. He also has one of my Enemy Skill materia complete with key skills - Big Guard, White Wind, Aqualung, Trine and Beta which is just for emergency situations where Cloud and Aeris both died.

lvl 37 -
HP: 3480
MP - 228
Defence - 120
Accessory - +10 vitality

Aeris is my mage. She can dish out serious damage! I have the staff that gives 7 slots and I fill her up with as much magic materia as possible and nothing else but one Enemy Skill materia. Support materia? NO THX! Support materia would be a waste of a slot since they offer no bonus to magic or max MP. Especially important are Destruct, Time, Revive and Barrier since these all grant +2 to magic and +5% extra MP. The way Aeris works is that since she is fully stocked up with lots of magic materia (no summons) and 1 enemy skill matera, her magic power and mana is very high. She has many of the support magic materia like silence and esuna and she can heal, but also has extremely powerful attacks against both multi and single targets. Multi targets suffer Trine, Aqualung and Beta, and single targets Quake3, Bolt3, Ice3 etc etc.

Lvl 37 -
HP - 1324
MP - 448
Magic attack - 99
Accessory - +10 magic

Cloud is my warrior. My physical damage dealer, my summoner! I have stocked him full up with all the summons I have (because unlike magic materia, they do not reduce strength when equipped, yet still increase magic attack and mana), so currently he has choco mog, shiva, ifrit, ramuh, titan and odin. He has a single Lightning materia linked to 'all' and the rest is stat increasing command and independant materia. His job in any normal fight is just attack, in a tought fight though he can make use of bolt 3 and the summon materia.

Lvl 37
HP - 1986
MP - 321
attack power - 117
magic attack - 74
Accessory - +10 strength

What I like is this way I have started playing builds the characters into specific roles... is it dangerous having Aeris and Cloud under 2000 hp? Not really, only in AoE situations, then I have white wind to fall back on. In a normal encounter, Barret will cover a high % of attacks.

No.

Its a pity that everyone that comes into the FFVII threads don't actually play FFVII. Doesn't make sense to me.

The word you were looking for is 'like'; FFVII and RPGs in general aren't games that you continue playing after you complete them. There are a myriad of reasons as to why someone who doesn't like FFVII would go to an FFVII forum. The most prevailing one is that many people derive just as much enjoyment from expressing their opinion on a game they dislike as much as they do a game they genuinely enjoy (myself included, although not this particular game). I believe you’ll find that a great deal of the members that regularly post in the FFVII section do so for this reason.

Ok, that isn't the main reason, but I'm sure someone else can explain that one to you...

@ Tayste : I didnt think the game was that good first time around. I left it for a while and played the other FF's. I only really started liking it after I played it again.

I've beaten FFVII lots of times because I had nothing better to do and Suikoden just owns. Seriously, nothing beats Suikoden. Nothing. Well, maybe Suikoden, but that's it.

Seriously, Suikoden > EVERYTHING

You don't convince me. What is everything? You give no one any reason to take what you say seriously.

After quitting WoW I feel like playing single player rpgs, so im going back over the old ones I haven't played in years to play through them again and refresh my memory. Im also playing through Chrono Trigger as I play FFVII.. once I finished FFVII i'll move onto VI and VIII. These games are quick to finish, like, 20 hours. Chrono Trigger is nice, might even play Secret of Mana again, although the story kinda blows.

Word I am looking for is not 'like'.. it is 'play'. RPG is the kind of game people play again after completion... this one in particular has been out almost 10 years, people complete them, then a few years later feel like playing them again. I do not relate to wanting to visit / post / be part of a community of games I do not play. Again, its a shame that no one who actually plays (currently), has visit the thread.

Is it really? I don't remember ever seeing "The kind of game people replay" in the definition of a role-playing game. There is absolutely no reason to replay VII unless you have a hanker for seeing seizures or men in bikini briefs.

Where are the facts? If the game is bad enough, all it merits is one play through.

As ThroneofOminous said, a lot of us find pleasure in ridiculing fanboys and their crazy reasons for deifying VII.

We have all played it once or twice, and there is no need to replay it. With the number of decent games coming out nowadays it's difficult to find time to play even the best of the old games. And if I remember correctly, CyanCyde was replaying the game before the data loss and telling us just how much he loved it.

I'm playing FFVII again, partly so I can yakk about it on this forum, partly because I have a friend who adores FFVII. I'm in disc 3 and I'm getting all the cool stuff (racing my new gold chocobo, a female named Boca as I type). [edit: love the sarcasm, Kailas] It's not that great. It's not that bad, but it surely isn't anywhere near what the majority of fans say it is. At any rate, by Tayste's line of reasoning, since all I'm currently playing is FFVII, I shouldn't be posting in say, the FFIX forum, even though it's one of my favorites. Whatever.

Anyway, my group, without all the stats, LoL. I'm not all set up, seeing as I've had Cloud in the Gold Saucer battle arena, but I can give the gist of what I'm doing.

Cloud--Supertank! I usually give him Cover, Counter, Double-Cut, Restore-All (or Enemy Skill), and HP and/or Speed-boosting Materia.

Yuff Yuff--Nuke!! She's usually got Quadra-Magic-Contain and Restore-All, maybe a summon or two, and HP/MP/Magic/Speed-boosting Materia. I also plan to experiment with W-Summon, since I just got it.

Vincent--Mage. He's my setup guy in the beginning of big fights, with Barrier-All, Time-All, and Restore-All. Once the set-up part is done, he'll either be my summon-nuke, or he'll just mime whatever Yuff Yuff does.

The whole idea is (obviously) for Cloud to soak up all the physical damage--Vincent and Yuff Yuff have enough magic defense to get by. I almost always have Regen on, too, so defense isn't a problem at all. With Cloud's Ultima Weapon, he's dealing 20k a turn, and my nukes aren't slackers, either.

I did not state anything as being the definition of a RPG. But how about this? - ALL games are the kind of games that get replayed. People replay games. Games get replayed.

this one in particular has been out almost 10 years, people complete them, then a few years later feel like playing them again.

Where are the facts? If the game is bad enough, all it merits is one play through.

Eh? Facts? How about 'I' am replaying the game? I never once stated that EVERYONE replays a certain game. Since I know quite a few people that have played the game many times, it is fair to use the word 'people'. I never said anything about the game being good or bad, so you are the one who needs to think about the word 'facts' and learn the word 'opinion'.

Again, its a shame that no one who actually plays (currently), has visit the thread.

You speak for everyone when you say there is no need to replay it? I am speaking for myself, that I WANT to play through again. Thats not my problem if you or anyone else don't have time to play these games again. All I said was it is a shame no one who is currently playing had posted.

I never said you shouldn't, just that I don't relate to it.

Finally, I never said anything about this game being great, or the best, or anything like that. I am just a guy who is playing through again, finding new ideas with my battle plans and sharing to see some responses. What do I think of the game? It is okay. Not amazing or anything, but then again I never said that it was.

Sounds like a cool set up you got CyanCyde mate, I am hoping to get into some chocobo breeding after I get back to the main map. I am currently at the whirlwind maze before Jenova Death. I did the whole of Geias Cliff including the 2 headed monster boss at the top using only Tifa and Cid, because Cloud was too high lvl and I wanted the other 2 to catch up levels so I killed poor cloud :)... Now that Cid has caught up, should be interesting fighting Jenova Death with only Tifa, who I replaced Aeris as my mage :)

Edit: It was dissapointingly easy. With fire absorb armor, the only annoying thing was having to throw echo screens when I got silenced.. the boss was a joke though, it was impossible for him to inflict damage. :(
