Squall - he's the same as Cloud.

A far as "girly" goes, the heroes really don't look so much like girly men, but more like wimpy boys.

Cloud- a little blond (in more ways than one) for my taste; too many issues.
Squall- pretty good hero, actually succeeded in rescuing the woman he loved, single-handedly and more than once
Zidane- haven't finished IX yet, but so far he hasn't impressed me.
Tidus- is a little girly.

The villains are the ones who are girly (even though I wouldn't want to mess with 'em)

I really can't see why male characters have to be either Alpha male to not be 'girly'.

Cloud lack personality but is obviously interested in Aeris and is very good friends with Tifa.

Squall is much the same, he hides any personality he may have then ends up with Rinoa, so male again (and is much more masculine i supose)

Zidane is after Garnet for the entire game so I can't see how anybody would mistake him for a girl? He looks like a young boy, and does nothing to suggest he anything other than a male.

Tidus looks like a pretty boy, he looks more japanese than any other ff character before (perhaps moreso than the other ffx cast too maybe bar Rikku) He whines a bit and has an annoying voice but he is clearly a young man.

I'd also like to learn how FF has been "Americanized." A little help, dearest Kuro? :-)
I've actually only played FF9 and FF10 in Japanese. Well, and FFX-2, too, but I kinda shoved it out of my head. I've got the rest of them in Japanese, and played them partially, but whether or not I'll ever have the time and inclination to actually play them fully is another question... ;)

My personal opinion is that FF9 was actually very well-balanced between staying very true to its Japanese nuances and Westernizing it enough so that it would still feel natural in English. A few things were lost in translation, but in the end there wasn't much that bothered me at all.

A few differences I can think of offhand are:

1. Freya uses a distinct Japanese dialect, which is different from the other characters.

2. Vivi's relationship with characters like Freya and Dagger came across in Japanese (to me) as a little more endearing, as he addresses them as "nee-chan" (meaning "big sister"), almost like a respectful nickname, I guess. Despite how close they are, he doesn't do the same for Zidane.

3. A few lines were changed, yes. Some that might not make sense in English, or just had nuances that needed to be changed. (Zidane's "should I sleep with you?" line comes to mind... :P)

4. Necron's whole "fear leads to anger... anger leads to hate..." line wasn't in the Japanese script. XD

In the end, I don't think there was anything truly lost in localization. Maybe a few places that I can think of where I realized that in Japanese, the meanings became clearer or it seemed to be more "powerful" in Japanese. A few situations made a little more sense, but maybe that's from just having played it one more time. Though there were situations like when I read Amarant's character phrase, which, when I saw it in Japanese, gave me another perspective on him that didn't quite get presented in English. ;)


My opinion of how well the Japanese --> English translation of FF10 were are about the same. It's been almost four years since I've played the Japanese version, though, so I can't quite think of anything that hit me as odd or different in the translation offhand. I should probably play it again sometime. Heh-heh.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call that characterization an "exlusively Westernized" one. ^^ Anime, manga (and Japanese storytelling as a whole) has its share of tall, dark, rugged "hero" figures used as leads. I just think that Final Fantasy's heros tended to fall towards the "we are do-gooders!!" type. And even then, lead characters can be emotionally constipated but at the core, they're "good" people. I still think Squall falls under that cateogry. Sure he's an asshat, but he's an asshat with a fundamentally good heart.

Tall, dark, and rugged is probably a universal archetype for 'heroes.' Granted, I'm far from being an expert in Japanese storytelling, but it seems to me, at least, that America's made an art of it.

Good point, I did overlook those characters, but a good amount of the ones do look like women. I didn't name people like barret, cid, or rude because they actually look like men.

Cloud has a effeminate body structure (although he still is kind of muscular). And his face and hair is similiar to my math teacher (who is a chick). If you gave Cloud boobs, he would fool me in a second. Also his face is similiar to women in the game such as tifa and yuffie

Cait Sith = Male (well, the kitty is a robot, and the person behind the robot is Reeve, who is a man)
Quina = You could consider Qu's as asexual, but ofcourse everything is open for interpretation, as it's not certain they're asexual as well.

And for Zidane and Kuja: I guess the thing with Genomes would be somewhat the same for Black Mages: when looking at the Genomes on Terra, those without a soul, they look as good as identical twins. Kuja is the older brother of Zidane, and these two have received souls, which gave them personality, and therefore a character with a personal change of appearance.
This however isn't as clear with the Black Mages. It's certain that there are male and female Genomes, but since they are like genetic clones, they look very much alike, even though there's a difference in sex.
I'm just assuming that there's also a difference in sex with the Black Mages, as for those who became aware of their existence also grew in personal treits and characteristics.

Hip thing and lace? I see guys stand with their hands on their hips all the time, and he sure looks like he's in a perfectly natural pose to me, that has nothing to do with his gender.

As for the lace... take a look at Colonial "buccaneer" (pirate) uniforms, costumes, and the like. Yep, you got it, the men would often wear ruffled/lace collars.

The other in-game and FMV images of Zidane certainly make him look very much like a guy to me.

Cloud is clearly a man, even in the ingame character model you can tell, he has large shoulders and arms which would look weird on a female character. Someone like Aeris has small arms (although their hands are all largish)

Zidane's personality was awesome. If it came down to it, I'd want someone like him fighting alongside me any day of the week, over people like Squall, Cloud, or Tidus.
