comment on (at least) the previous song. you can comment on more than one if you want to.

then pick a random song you like, upload it to www.rapidshare.de, and post it here. try to pick something somewhat obscure so people won't have already heard it.

<font size=5>EDIT BY TK: Apparently some people have had problems understanding the very simple way this thread is supposed to work. DON'T post just to be like "hey I like this" or "hey I don't like this." If you're posting, keep the chain going by posting a new song as WELL as responding. DON'T just post a link, you have to respond at least to the last person's song or else it's not a chain. The Letter Kills song got turned off after 45 seconds 'cause shit. That guy should stop singing like a pussy. Comparing this band to The Offspring is terrible, Sarah. ;(

Is that Leonard Cohen song in a movie or something? I feel like I've heard it before. It's an alright song. It's not my style, but I like his voice a lot.

This song is by a now-broken up Japanese punk band. If it sounds like it was recorded live, it's because it was. But it was recorded in a studio. They always recorded everything live, studio or not.

It is proper to listen to it very loud. It can't really be appreciated otherwise.

Since I'm feeling like weirdness today, you get a Flipper song! Flipper are just wonderful. They are like a big ball of cheery happiness all rolled up and condensed into a... small ball of cheery happiness. very well!

I've heard a bit of Less Than Jake, but never this song before. Sounds like a different singer from what I've heard. Either that, or he's singing higher, and/or he's had his voice touched up or something. In any case, I think his voice sounds lame. Ska can be fun, but I think this is prty crap. Dull. The chorus sounds like "lean on me" or something. Average lyrics too.

Again, I love the intro, I had my speakers on full accidentally though, so it was quite a surprise! I think he (obviously, not sure who it is) has a great voice too. Out of interest, what are the noises in the background?

Well, it's really hard to upload files that I think everyone will like. My musical taste is narrow enough, but I think this ones pretty neat, I bit of a repetitive intro, but once it gets into it it's a great song. And obviously, if you like Interpol - that helps.

I'm not a big fan of Interpol, but neither do I dislike them. I actually really like that song though! You can definitley sense that they're heavily influenced by The Smiths and Joy Divison who are two of my favourite bands.

Also that background noise I think is when you get a bass near to a pretty decent bass cab and you turn it up to get some decent feedback, you get a helicopter sounding sound. I think that maybe it.

This song was pretty decent. It felt a little bit repetitive, but it was also short, so it never got to the point where it bothered me. It wasn't OMG SUPER AWESOME, but I could see it getting stuck in my head after a few listens.

Whao, this song rocks, Ndi. I was tapping my foot the whole time. It's way fun and not overly bouncy or sugary or anything. I love how they keep that little lick going without ever resorting to any kind of overly complicated interlude that dilutes the focus. Just catchy and rhythmic the whole way through. A+! I will will definitely seek out more of this.

OK! So last time I went and saw Lightning Bolt, this killer Japanese band called Afrirampo opened up for them. I don't think anybody in the crowd knew who the hell they were before they started playing but as soon as they did, everybody went nuts. They are a guitar/drums girl duo who dress up in sparkly red dresses and makeup and then play quirky bizarre experimental punk tunes while making funny noises. Live, they start a lot of their songs with weird chants in Japanese, or by making bird calls or something. At one point the drummer chick put a stuffed cat over her mouth and started meowing into the microphone, and sounded virtually identical to a real cat. In any case, they are primarily a live band, so this recording probably won't be something that will have you listening again and again (unless you're weird like me and you just like stuff that's insanely repetitive), but hopefully it will give you an idea of how cool they are live and you will maybe go see them if they ever tour the US again! This is a live recording from when they played London fairly recently (hence their chanting about eating London at the beginning of the track!)

The original is one of my favorite songs, so I have a hard time not comparing it to that. It's just not as good, or as haunting. Lee Hazelwood's dark cowboy song mixed with Nancy Sinatra's pretty happy song is just so great. It just sounded like an electronic group that happened to be sampling Nancy.

The japanese girl sings it exactly like Nancy Sinatra does. I did think they were just sampling her at first! Anyways, I guess I'll post the original.

Mossy - Weird intro--nice guitar after--generally a nice sounding song, especially when the drums kick in--especially that symbal(sp?) fest--Pretty funky voice, I actually really like it!--simple but great bassline--hope you dont take offence to this, but the vocals remind me a little of Metallica (which I actually like).

My song, I've gone for good old Rush.

You cut me deep with that Metallica jibe Rapture, I really don't like them for some reason and it isn't to do with musical quality as they produce good music, same kind of un-explainable hate I have of Oasis.

Anyway that song reminded me of 15 to 1, At the intro I hated it but when the vocals kicked in it began to grow on me. And what do you know by the end of it, I was enjoying it.

Anyway, another Kyuss one here;

Nice fast intro, get's a tad repetitive, the (I think its fast bass picking) though. I love there love for frequent use of symbals, especially of a band of this genre, as it adds hmm "oomph". Finally got into it...And yeah it really reminds me of Metallica (only vocally).

I liked that song, it really reminded me of a band/artist but I can't think of who. A nice little melody (maybe it's the eagles?) but suffers from repitiveness imo.
Anyway this is my favourite QOTSA song. I know it's not that obscure and I'm sure some of you will probably have heard it but;

Thought it was pretty boring, I'm afraid. It just doesn't move, which isn't to say I don't like anything that isn't fast, I like lots of things that are slow and mellow. This song, I just don't feel like there's anything happening in it. It's like mush. =/

EDIT: CRAP, YOU. YOU'RE TOO FAST. Okay I will comment on Mossy's song as soon as I have downloaded it.

QOTSA-Hangin' Tree (http://rapidshare.de/files/5610415/07_Hangin__Tree.wma.html)

I'm not huge on QOTSA but I find I can get into some of their material. This song is alright. I kind of wish they would turn that lead riff into chords at some point, add some more thickness and power to the song. But it is an interesting tune. Good backup vocals. I doubt I'd come back and listen to it frequently but I can say I enjoyed it.

OKAY! Riverdales song! A post-Screeching Weasel project that existed primarily in the mid-90s and then stopped so Screeching Weasel could start again and then started again when Screeching Weasel stopped again and then promptly stopped so Screeching Weasel could pretend to start again but not actually do anything! Anyway, they do pretty heavily Ramones-based stuff, but more power-popped out. When Ben Weasel was first discussing the band, he described it as "a golden oldies band with a Ramones twist." I think what the band actually became deviated pretty significantly from that concept, though. They are basically centered around heavily rhythmic, melodic guitar fury, so turn the volume up loud.

That song was excellent, reminiscent of Teenage Kicks a little. When it started up I thought it was pretty boring but once I took your advice and turned the volume up, it really blew me away. Considering I don't like the Ramones and this is Ramones based it was especially impressive to me. Anyway this will probably be an unpopular one as I only know one person that likes this band but I love the guitarwork;

The awful rap that was spliced into that song forced me to turn it off in tears. Asides from that I found it extremely boring and the sound quality was poor. Even the recording of it was poor, with the singers voice given much more emphasis than the rappers and the occasionally decent guitarwork was drowned out.

Anyways mine is The Golden Age, the Flaming Lips have covered it (I'm fairly certain from Beck).

the only time I've heard mars volta before this was when cassie sent one of the tracks to me. I think. but I could totally be confusing that with another random band that I tend to confuse with bands like the mars volta !

Well when I first listened to it I thought it was a bit weird but not to my liking. Then I re-read your post so I decided to concentrate on the song more and I turned the volume up(imo, to appreciate it fully, you have to listen to it pretty loud). The second time I liked it a lot. The bit 3 minutes 20 into it, when the song tempo speeds up dramatically is great. Lyrically it's a lot darker than the instruments would suggest with murder and suicide references. The nice melodic tune distracts the listener entirely from the lyrics and it would have been a pity had I not listened to it again. It's probably my second favourite song I have downloaded here, so thanks Sarah.

My own choice is something much less interesting or thought provoking. It's probably my favourite Flaming Lips song pre-Soft Bulletin though;

It's the sort of thing that feels to me like it ought to be a movie score, which basically means I tend to forget it's on and it sinks into the background. Not really bad or good.

BGK stands for Balthasar Gerards Kommando. I have no idea what that means but I think it's one of the coolest-sounding phrases ever.

Not bad. I'm not that keen on the vocals, but it's got a good beat. I wish they'd turn the guitar up more, the song would feel more powerful to me if it wasn't lost in the rest of it so much. I wouldn't come back to it to listen again, but it was worth hearing.

This is my favorite Suzanne Vega song. It is swell.

I didn't like that song in the slightest. It was too much of a distorted mess with barely any melody or rythym and the random occasions of the backing vocals (or should I say screaming?) pretty much killed the song for me.

Neo I couldn get urs 2 work. But mossy I had heard urs before cause of the oc

Really? I really couldn't have imagined that crap having any positives.

Anyway, my choice is off Interpol's first album, Turn On the Bright Lights which I evantually got on Saturday. I ordered it at my local music shop because I don't like buying stuff at HMV and somehow it took 3 months to arrive. Also on a side note, if you have heard and liked Antics you should get this, it's pretty similar but still manages to be better.

And it sounded like some of lyrics might have been neat, but it was hard to tell during the faster parts.

Stop shitting up the thread, guys. Just respond to songs and then post one.

<font size=5>EDIT: From now I am just going to delete any post that isn't participating properly in the thread. Just read the first post, it's REALLY not hard.</font>

I was gonna let somebody else do Ndi's song since I'm already familiar with it, but the thread is falling down too far so I'll have to just say: I love Tilly and the Wall, and that is one of my favorite of their songs! It is superb and I really love their vocalist and the fact that they have a tapdancer for purcussion and the fact that they make fun catchy songs.

Anyway. Here is a song: <a href=http://rapidshare.de/files/8076661/03_bleach_-_canary_teikoku_no_gyakushuu.mp3.html>Bleach: Canary Teikoku no Gyakushuu</a>. Bleach is really awesome, just be careful if you look them up because there is a shitty emo band called Bleach. The good Bleach usually goes by Bleach 03 in the west to avoid the confusion.

I was skeptical initially but once the vocals came in the song was pretty cool with the sort of rymthmic-something-between-spoken-word-and-singing (like Cake) thing going on + some surealistish story.
My roommate initially thought that this Bjork (but quickily figured out it wasn't), I would say as for girls on pianos I would prefer the Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer.

I would like to contribute this song (http://kangarooalliance.com/wraith.html) (actually its a music video) by Of Montreal (http://www.ofmontreal.net/index3.html). Okay! I liked that song and it was pretty reminiscent the Shins. It's extremely simplistic but I guess it's exactly what the band was going for and I might download a few more songs by them, maybe. Oh and btw, I'm glad you posted the video rather than the song on it's own as I'm certain that it would have lost a lot of appeal if it wasn't for the video and it's fun feel. However, it doesn't so much sound like the Shins as it is the Shins. The video is near identical to the Chutes Too Narrow artwork, the singer's voices are almost identical and they have the same style, but I still enjoyed the song.

As for my own song, it's by Fingers-Cut, Megamachine, an acoustic folk/punk band which I have recently started to listen to, thanks to the influence of Pat (Not T.K. Sunglasses). I wasn't sure what song I wanted to post as pretty much all the songs are amazing but I think that this one is my favourite so:
