This may be common knowledge by now, but since I have not been around the final fantasy community for long I don't know.

It is possible to get across the marsh without a chocobo, you need to wait for a while, try to find the closest possible part of grass to the other side and wait for the midgar zolom (snake) to go to the very furthest left, (assuming you are facing the entrance)

the last time i played FF7 i actually waited for so long i gave up and made a mad dash across, i didn't make it and got into a fight about half way across, but then I ran away and tried again. I did this about 3 times until eventually he couldn't catch me up. After a battle he will restart in a random spot.

On my first game of VII I actually crossed without a chocobo, by pure luck. I completely missed the Choco Farm. When I later learned the correct way was to catch a chocobo to cross, I was disappointed.

lol cool dude ^^

Well anyway, you need to get a chocbo to cross that, you might try it on foot, if you are lucky, you will make it, but your bets bet is a chocobo ^^

I always find peace in slaughtering the zolom when I get the airship and go back to the swamp...

I go back after I get the Fire Ring to get Beta, that gets me through most of the game.

It's usefull for speed runs.
You can get chocobo lure on the floor at the chocobo ranch later on. So it doesn't affect your game much apart from speed. (and money because chocobo lure cost 2000 gil)

If you walk across until the Midgar Zolom is right next to you, then Save your game, when you come out he is over the other side of the marsh (if you walk across the left hand side) and you can make it across.

Heck, I just battle my way over, Midgar Zolom is extremely weak, 4000 HP my a$$. I got Beta first time I crossed, and I lived to tell the tale.

But if I were to die to it, I could not forgive myself! Lol

You can live or die and still get Beta.

You engage in battle (this is if you wanna live), cast Big Guard (if you have it), battle his HP down physically, he'll cast Beta (hopefully you have Big Guard effects still running, and Enemy Skill materia equiped), the dmg will be reduced, and you get the skill, then you just kill him, save the game, and continue your journy thru the marsh.

This is how to do it and die: DO NOT CAST BIG GUARD, engage battle, battle his HP down with physical attacks, he'll cast Beta, you learn it, die, and appear at the edge of the marsh, use a Tent (if you have one), or Pheonix Downs, Potions/Hi-Potions/X-Potions, Megalixers, Elixers. Then save the game.

I didn't know you still got beta even if you die, Thats very usefull.

I could'nt beat him because I don't spend hours leveling up, Although on one playthrough fought until level 30 or so where you get yuffie. Popping in and out of fort condor to restock on tents.

Although you can't buy form there until after you fight their battle.

Nope. If you get beta and die or escape your character doesn`t have it.

Where can you get mythril? Wasn't that just a rumor that you could bring it to the sword maker?

Everytime I try crossing the damned marshes I always get caught ONE STEP before the otherside. Quite aggrevating, yes, but as most say, the Midgar Zolom is a cake walk. I mainly fight it and wait for it to knock out two of my characters, because it's funny to see  as far as E.Skills go, Big Guard was the main one I used... IF I used the materia at all.

Enemy Skill was nice though. Frog song works well at putting people to sleep so you could steal easier. Bad breath was good at handicaping the enemy with a number of statuses. Being that most of them are immune to some but not all, it always caught them with something. Trine and Beta were some of the best none elemental damagers 2.

Aqualung makes like too easy though, Even if it does cost a fair bit of mp.

Aqualung... bleh... I prefer nonelemental Summons/spells. It removes that whole, absorb/double/half/no damage complications that you gotta memorize. Me, I just hit em with Ultima XD
