Eric Clapton, as good as he is/was, has now definitley passed it. If you ever see him live he just plays some 12 Bar Blues stuff, and I've heard his cover of 'Layla' more than enough for one lifetime.

As for Jonny Greenwood, my favourite guitarist. I don't know anyone who is more versatile, he can solo, it may no sound amazingly technical, but it is. He also comes up with some of the greatest riffs in the history of music. And to round it all off.......he's a bloody mutli-instrumentalist.

MossY
08-05-2005, 08:37 PM
Jonny Greenwood is an amazing guitarist theres no doubt about it. In your standard song you have one major riff, two max and a solo. With Paranoid Android theres four(I think) and in Street Spirit there is three but they are pretty similar. Also credit has to go to Thom Yorke as he writes a lot of the music too but as I said my favourite guitarist is Tom Morello

Rodrigo Y Gabriela have amazing ability with acoutic guitars. Unfortunately, they're not very well known.

I'm not going to say any one favorite guitarist or who I think is best. I think that when you say something like that you're generalizing and overlooking too much. For instance, players like Rhandy Rhodes are highly praised, and yet he had really, really bad rhythms and horrible sound, all he could do was solo. You have to consider all aspects when determining if a guitarist is a truly "good". To me, a guitarist is no good unless he just comes up with decent music in a "round about" way. This means catchy guitar riffs, pleasant tone, and moving, inspired melodic work are essential. There is no real perfect player, but there are those out there who are definitely more inspiring than others. It all comes down to personal opinion, really, but in my mind, only those "well rounded" guitarists, that just plainly come up with great music, are the closest to what I could consider the "best."

Yngwie Malmsteem
Steve Vai
Ry Cooder (Awesome Slide Guitarist!)
Mark Knopfler
Joe Satriani (sp?)
Tommy Emmanuelle

The best guitarist ever was clearly Greg Ginn from Black Flag.

08-23-2005, 12:59 PM
Omar Rodriguez, coz he can do allsorts. He's a master with the pedals, and the versatility is amazing, he sounds great on latin guitars, spanish guitars etc. Really impressive.

Slash, dont really need a reason.

Jimi, again, awesome dont really need a reason.

Led Zep is ok too, I spose.

And Wayne Coyne, for rhythm too, his stuff is fucking great.

Kirk Hammett is over rated by many, but his sense of melody is really impressive. His live solos, the ones of old anyway, also show that he's really got a lot of technical skill. The current ones, which are really just small instrumentals more so than solos, showcase his more melodic work. I think based on his playing in Metallica's songs, he's too often considered "the best ever," but I definitely respect his playing and wouldn't have ever picked up a guitar without his influence.

tom morello of rage (not audioslave)

As much as I like Tom Morello, I'd like to point out that he isn't excessively inventive, is he? His guitar playing is basically the same in both bands and imo, what you are saying is you don't like Chris Cornell, so you can't listen to Audioslave and due to this Tom Morello's guitar playing must have changed style so that you have absolutely no reason to listen to Audioslave. If you did listen to them you'd find that the guitar playing is indistinguishable, except for perhaps some of the effects aren't used as much.

jonjon
10-20-2005, 07:37 PM
just not as cutting edge.
take rage s song "maria" listen to the riff, listen to the solo- can you find that in audioslave

MossY
10-20-2005, 08:04 PM
I find that solo annoying tbh, but I take your point about losing a bit of cutting edge. Although, as I said in my previous post, Audioslave use less effects and I'd put it down to that.

Eric Clapton

MICHAEL ANGELO BATIO OWNZ ANY GUITARIST OUT THERE

Michael Angelo Baito is very technically skilled, but his playing is sort of ridiculous to me. It's purely for show off. I really haven't heard him play anything that sounds too profound. Guys like David Gilmour are way better players for the fact that you actually feel something from the playing, and it's memorable, it's not just a whirlwind of notes. There's a sort of middle ground I feel that should be focused on, a compromise between technicality and feeling. Players that have both and successfully blend them are probably the best, depending on your point of view. Some people focus only on how fast someone can play, while others tend to focus only on how good their vibrato and melodies are. It's all purely opinion.

Just to say, to me, Baito's V shaped double neck guitar is pretty stupid looking

Other good ones include Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple, Larry Carlton of Steely Dan, Trey Anastasio of Phish, Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, Robert Fripp of King Crimson, Gary Moore, Frank Zappa, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival, and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd.

Okay hold on. I'm just curious: Why would anyone list Kurt Cobain here? What stands out about his guitar playing, exactly? I mean this has nothing to do with the fact that I just don't like Nirvana, I really don't get this at all. As far as I know everybody and their dog can play every Nirvana song ever exactly the way Cobain played them.

iconoclastic pastry
07-08-2006, 08:11 AM
I guess it depends on what criteria you're using. "Best" is a pretty vauge term. Your observation that his guitar playing isn't difficult might not mean much to someone who doesn't place any particular value on how difficult something is to play. I haven't heard Nirvana in quite a while, so I can't really answer your question directly. He wouldn't be on my list, but that's just me.

TK
07-08-2006, 10:46 PM
My comment was mainly about that I think anybody can play his songs the way he did, not just that anybody can play them. It's one thing if people think he's a good songwriter, but his guitar playing isn't special in any way. =/

Six pages in a "best guitarist ever" thread.

Not one mention of Jason Becker.

I can't believe it.

A speed metal pioneer, neoclassical legend, technical god, incomparable in melody and technique. Then considering the fact that unlike a lot of the technical speed guys, he was always having so much fun with what he played, he always tops out my list. If anyone hasn't checked him out yet, I seriously suggest it.

Too much Malmsteen and Vai these days, not enough Becker. Although they were all quite good in their own right.

Kurt Cobain
Jimi Hendrix
Thom Yorke
Jonny Greenwood
Brian May
John Lennon

John from chili peppers is by far the best for me, I've been playing for 7 years now and realy those neo-classical have tons and tons of talent but thats not enough (for me), aside from John there is Hendrix, Page, Rhoads, Mustaine (yea Mustaine dont flame me for it) and Iommi.

My only problem with Mustaine is that he's a giant cunt personality wise, and that his solos aren't too interesting. They're skillful, but there's too many repeated phrases and such. He does deserve mention for his riffs though. He's heavily overlooked as a rhythm guitarist.
