Strategic minds? Ummm... Dynasty Warriors barely has more strategy to it than Pong. It's a hack & slash game. Not to say it isn't fun, at least for a little while, but it certainly lacks in the strategy department.

Firstly, I love Dynasty Warriors, with Dynasty Warriors 3/Xtreme Legends being my favourites in the series (the less said about the godawful PSX/arcade original though the better), but, although the DW games are essentially hack-n-slash games at heart, they do also involve a little strategy, in that you have to plan how you proceed through the battle (why else do you have the 'battle briefing' screen before each battle?).

Yes, that does involve slaying hundreds, or even thousands, of enemy soldiers in the process, and laying waste to pretty much the entire enemy army almost single-handedly, but often you also have to fulfil certain goals in order to proceed through the battle besides mindless slaughter (Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires and Dynasty Warriors 5 are examples of this).

Such goals could be as simple as 'seal the the enemy gate before the enemy reinforcements arrive', or 'destroy the carriage carrying Lu Bu's daughter before she can escape though the troop gate', or 'lure Zhang Ren into Zhuge Liang's trap', or they can simply involve taking out a certain enemy officer or officers in a certain order.

Often battles will also have multiple goals appear at once, meaning you have to use good judgement and prioritise your objectives, as choosing foolishly (and/or being too slow) can prove disasterous, often giving you the 'game over' screen as your only reward (the famous Battle of Chi-Bi and the climatic Battle of Whu Zhang Plains are just two examples of battles where you will have multiple tasks to accomplish).

Currently, I am mid way though playing Dynasty Warriors 5 on the PS2, and I'm really enjoying it. Although I have mixed feelings about the change to just a single bodyguard assisting you rather than an entire troop as in the earlier games, and I'm annoyed the officer edit mode from Dynasty Warriors 4, Dynasty Warriors 4 Xtreme Legends, and Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires has been scrapped, as I really enjoyed creating my own character to lay waste to the forces of Wei, Wu and Shu, it is still a great game that I am enjoying tremendously.

And for the record, my favourite Dynasty Warriors character is Nanman queen (and self-proclaimed 'goddess of fire') Zhu Rong - man, with her lvl 4 weapon 'Inferno' in hand, and the right items equipped, she absolutely burns the enemy to dust! :p

I don't like Zhu Rong's default outfit this time around though (but at least you can unlock her much better DW4 costume ;) )

Dynasty warriors wasn't all that!
if you like strategy I recommend Command and Conquer: Generals, or Art Of War

Orignally posted by chorns :

The original Dynasty Warriors was and still is awesome.

If you're talking about the first Dynasty Warriors on the PS2 (Dynasty Warriors 2 (Shin Sangoku Musou)), then I'd agree with you. But if you're talking about the one on the PSX, which was co-developed by CAPCOM (Hence why Zhang He looks like a distant relative of Vega), then I'm afraid I have to disagree.

The original Dynasty Warriors was a beat 'em up, similar to games like Streetfighter II and King of Fighters (Just two as an example.).

Anywayz, back to the topic at hand. I'm a huge fan of the Dynasty Warriors games (Hell, I was the one responsible for getting Enkidoh hooked on them, amongst other games.), and even enjoy going back and playing the earlier versions of them as well.

Currently in DW5, I've managed to do just about everything (Unlocked all 48 characters, gained all 48 movies and all 48 level 4 weapons.), and even with the earlier DW games, I've got just about everything... EXCEPT Dynasty Warriors Empires. Still need to get a bit more from that.

Another good game, which the DW games where (I suppose in a sense) spun off from, are the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games. Good strategy games them, and if you like the DW and ROTK games, track down the novel, ironically called 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms'. It's a great read, if I do say so myself.

So we disagree eh? I think Sangoku Musou was awesome, I like fighting games though.

If you want the stategic side of DW, I'd suggest playing Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It's the same characters, but a very strategic game.

strategy? dynasty warriors? If you want strategy try Rome Total War. As for is it a good game, no not really. It's dull and repetitive and is just another simplistic hack n slash but then again its got its fans

Romance of the Three Kingdoms has no hack and slash, but it has all of the characters from DW. But it's a very detailed strategy game.

Fuck strategy!Dynasty Warriors is a kick ass game!My first one was 4 and Ive got em all from that up.Nearly got all the characters. The Wu are probably the best although two of my fav characters are Ma Chao and Zhao Yun of Shu.
Theres some strategy involved in the game. The things you are ordered to do dont have to always be done but make the level easier(like the all powerful fire attack). If you are lookin for a brilliant and extremly fun game(Espically on chaos mode) then you'll like it.The thing I like most about it is the fact that its never over til its over.Even if its you and the commander, with practicaly no health, against an entire army, led by Lu Bu,theres still a chance of victory.

All they do, in each new installment, is basically add 10 more characters to play as.

[edit] - I'm not saying it's a bad game, it just need more than characters every time they make a new one.

I've been playing since 3 now, that one still being my favourite purely on stress relief value. It may be repetitive it has it's draw points, plus, who doesn't like the thought of mercilesly slaying 2000 people single handedly? unless you're a fucking pacifist....

Dynasty Warriors 3 kicks but i prefer Dynasty Warriors Tactics 2 it may be turn based but is a lot more strategic. There are so many ways to win each scenario. Does anyone else agree??

D.T. is fun but it can drag out a bit if you ask me.When I'm about to tear up the enemy with 3 or 4 good armies I don't want to be interrupted every second turn by one officer and a squad leader.
Kessen 2 is a better game if you ask me, although Kessen 3 is even better again, I guess I just prefer the sengoku setting.

DW4 still remains as my favorite among the series. I just finished DW5. It hasn't improved that much - the costumes are almost similar to the ones in 4, most of the new characters sucked except for Zuo Ci, you can only have one bodyguard and they removed my favorite 'taunt' move (I miss hearing Zhang He's 'beauty come to me' and 'beauuutifuul' lines). But I like the fact that you can have a tiger accompany you in battle.

Dynasty Warriors is an awsome game. However I'm stuck on 5 because I don't understand some of the objectives. I'm supposed to hold a postition then help others, then the brigde gets taken over, then I'm supposed to kill the boss, then I lose the game becasue the brigde never fell and I'm over run. What the? Any clues or suggestions.
I also don't think it's the most stragetic game. It maybe to some, but...not really. Then again, I can't figure it out? Wjhat does that tell you?

The objectives hardly ever change, the only occasion I can think of is on Tian Shui. If you find that your army or your commander is taking a severe beating then just chib the enemy commander to end the battle, unless it's an escape level in which case you're buggered. Having Red Hare helps of course.

Now how the hell is TWR repetitive!? You need to explain this one! There are several factions to play lots of countrys to conquer, missons from the senate I could go on about this one for hours! Seriously what the hell did you mean by that!?

Oh and Dynasty Warrior is an OK game though I think it lacks strategy I've only tried the ones from three and on though

There was so many things i wanted to write when i saw the thread( im sorry if my english is bad, im from norway:P), but Enkidoh said it all

so i will just say: Love the games, love the characters, love the story(even read the book, Romance of the trhee kingdoms, and i think that everyone could read it;) And since i love heavy metal, and most other rock, i LOVE THE MUSIC!! I know that the games are a bit like one another( i dont know if you can say that i english:P) but its one of my favourite game series, but still not better than The Sims, Command & Conquer and Knights of the old republic

Denne siden er r, elsker den;), this was norwegian for: This web site is awesome, i love it!!

I hopped on the Samurai Warriors bandwagon before playing Dynasty Warriors. If there is any strategy in that game at all, I guess it would be which officer to attack first before the story goes into play..besides that, hack and slash and pressing buttons does better than trying to coordinate your buddy into executing a pincer.

Diao Qiao rox my sox, and that's the end of it.

Oh, and don't forget to purchase Gundam Musou for the PS3! :shameless plug:

Dynasty Warriors is good but like all these type of games, they get repetitive

Washuaddict
06-17-2007, 09:09 PM
If they ever were to include somewhat of a variety, I think they should go out on a limb like they're doing with Gundam Musou. Maybe include warriors from the European continent or even like the Indians...heck...but as stated above, it'd be quite repetitive...
