The perfect band. Discuss.

TK
07-24-2005, 03:05 PM
Well they are a bit of an anomoly in that they got a million times better AFTER they blew up and became popular.

They seem to have decided it would be cool to hop on the "let's make a shitload of money off pretending to be politically motivated and telling thirteen year olds that they should vote" bandwagon, which isn't cool. I've heard a few songs from American Idiot and they were okay, but there was one on the radio that sounded like processed ass.

I dunno, I'm impressed that they've managed to stay around so long and still put out quality stuff fairly consistently, but their days of greatness are over and they're far from perfect. Dookie, Nimrod, and Insomniac are all really classic albums though.

Alice Wonderbra
07-24-2005, 03:09 PM
i was discussing it with someone earlier who thought i wouldnt like them when i realized that everyone likes them enough to listen to them. they are the one band that anyone in the world could listen to. they always put out hits and every sort of person knows atleast one of their songs. theyve been around for a while now too. perfect band imo. its really really hard to make music anyone could listen to.

Two of my closest friends dislike Green Day, as do several people I know from the old Nothing Nice to Say message board that used to exist. Also, in that shitty ass My Chemical Romance thread, some idiots expressed distaste for them.

It's the strange truth.

Alice Wonderbra
07-24-2005, 03:18 PM
they arent real people. they have to be able to listen to them. people tend to exaggerate.

TK
07-24-2005, 03:21 PM
Define "able". Does "able" mean physically capable? Because the people I'm thinking of would ask you to turn it off if you put them on.

Sry! Just accept it!

I actually used to dislike Green Day until I warmed up to his voice. I still think it sounds pretty stupid, but it doesn't bother me like it used to. For like a year after I first got into music, I didn't like listening to them solely because of that.

Dookie was one of the first cds I ever bought. Fun stuff.

Pretty much agreein' with TK here. I can't help thinking they're fantastic, but seeing the band now and listening to half the songs on American Idiot makes me cringe. Still, everything before that was awesome enough for me to forgive them. I really like all their other albums - even Warning, and their pre-Dookie stuff does have its charms.

They were my first "favourite band" that I was really into (Nimrod was one of the first albums I bought; had to buy it twice cos my sister stole it!) and probably the one that started getting me into punk rock and really, into music in general. I've always rather liked Billy Joes voice tho! I see what leeloo means though, all sorts of people with different musical tastes seem to like Green Day...but they are hated by some.

Also, The Weakerthans are pretty much the perfect band, or the closest thing, as far as I'm concerned.

Wattson
07-25-2005, 07:02 AM
I can't think of a single song by Greenday that I like.
Once I said this about Greenday, while discussing what I found bad about the Live8 concert I saw part of on tv "Such as: Green Day playing Queen's 'We are the Champions.' I'm not sure which part ruined it more, the horrendous song or Green Day. I'm going to give Queen the benefit of the doubt."

Anyways, regardless, I wouldn't ask anyone to turn it off if they put it on, because most of the time that happens it's their car or their home, and I'm a guest, and I'm not rude enough to be like "ew turn it off."

But, you know, if you like Greenday, that's cool too.

So are there actually people that dont like Good Riddance? i thought that was like, THE one song that anyone could hear a million times and not be sick of. haha shit. i have honestly never talked to a person that disliked green day =S

Bigfoot
07-25-2005, 12:27 PM
Good Riddance is a good song, but it has been pretty overdone. I think it's funny they always play it as an emotional farewall thingo, partly because it's called Good Riddance (despite the Time of your Life in brackets n chorus) and partly cos there's the quiet part at the start where he messes up the chord and says "fuck". Maybe there's a censored version or something.

TK
07-25-2005, 12:31 PM
Yeah, I definitely got sick of Good Riddance back in the day. Not even remotely close to their best stuff.

There's definitely a censored version though because they played it on the radio practically 24/7.

Alice Wonderbra

most of the time they dont start playing the song until after he starts playing it right so they skip all of that.

Listen to me sir, the problem I have nowadays, is that I have no idea whether people are being sarcastic, so I have no idea whether to praise them on agreeing with my statement.

What I mean is, how can they think they are punk? If you want punk; Dead Kennedys is the answer.

I still think you're hot though =/

TK
07-31-2005, 09:46 PM
The Dead Kennedys aren't punk. By the time they came along, punk had been named, which made it "acceptable" and therefore destroyed the spirit in which it was originally formed. The Dead Kennedys were part of the hardcore movement, which was post-punk and focused on bringing the music to a heavier and more interactive level, with greater emphasis on DIY ethics, and less on shocking fashion.

PUT THAT IN YOUR SEMANTICS PIPE AND SMOKE IT!

P.S. I still think you're hot too.

Haha. I love you as well. I'm just trying to make the point that "punk" is ultimately semantics, and there's little reason not to allow Green Day to fall under the moniker when it already has a highly dubious definition, just because they don't sound like your typical 80s punk band. They're actually a pretty natural progression from the Ramones, if you trace them back musically.

I love the DKs too. They were easily one of the top ten punk bands to ever exist imo. Not that I've ever actually tried to make that list.

I don't like their most recently released single (at least I think it's their most recently released single), "wake me up when september ends," but I like "boulevard of broken dreams."

I like the new political aspect too. I could have cared less about how the country was run when I was younger, but I got into Rage Against the Machine, and even though I didn't know what the hell they were talking about in the songs beyond "political stuff," I liked the music, and the music sounded urgent, so it made me care. I like the thought that some kid could have the same experience with Green Day's new stuff.

Of course, I like their older music about beating off out of boredom as well.

Okay, let's see. A band gets really big and famous doing their thing, then they fall out of the spotlight. Bands who have ridden on their popularity start to get the spotlight instead. All of a sudden Green Day reappears in the spotlight immitating those new bands in terms of musical style, fashion, and subject matter, all of which are a sudden drastic change for them.

You're right, it's totally just a coincidence.

I'd rather see 30 year old guys singing about politics than generally making "party music". Regardless of if it's supposedly just "the cool thing to do" it atleast shows a level of growth and adaptation which is sometimes good. I think it's silly to look down upon any band for wanting to make money. No matter what sort of goofy attitude all the "true underground" types build up about never wanting to "hit it big" I'm sure the vast majority of people start bands hoping to reach some level of success, money in tow. Green Day already had that sort of success and now are simply trying to keep their music heard and reach more and more audiences. I don't see the harm in it, and from what I've heard of their new album I don't see how they really changed their musical style that much either. The songs just sound better arranged to me, a little more complex, and again, that's certainly not a bad thing.

I don't really like Green Day, they make pop music, I consider it pop with guitars that has been labled "Punk" now granted I had an upringing in Rap music so I'm not very learned in the rock spectrum. But their music just doesn't appeal to me. Excuse me while I listen to the Distillers and The Ramones...and other various rap/jpop/and other artists but in this thread no one cares...

So you'll listen to pop if it's in Japanese and you can't understand it but not if it's relevant to you and your life? Durendal
08-04-2005, 10:53 PM
but now you have to back up your claim!

Wasn't aware I had made any claim, was simply making fun of people in general who don't like certain bands simply because they made it big or are mainstream. Not necessarily you, I've met plenty of people in person who share that belief.

Guess the closest thing to a claim I made in here is that you don't know what Green Day's motivation was when they made American Idiot. You said they fell out of the spotlight and came back with this album that immitates musical style, fashion, and subject matter of these new bands.

Maybe I haven't scrutinized every track as much as you have, but as far as musical style goes when I heard their new songs I wasn't reminded of any band other than Green Day, so I said to myself "hey this sounds like green day, they must have put out another album, time to change the station now". I can't comment on fashion since I don't watch music videos or go to any Green Day concert so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt there. I honestly don't know what's wrong about writting songs about a different subject matter than they have in the past, people care about different things when they're 30 than they did when they were 19 and if any of them have kids that's probably changed their outlook on life even more.

Seems like you're saying that Green Day did whatever they could to be popular again completely disregarding what it meant for their music or personal integrity. It had been over two years since they last relased an album, they fell out of the spotlight simply because radiostations don't keep most songs in heavy rotation for that long. Green Day already has a huge fan base, they don't need to try and immitate any other band for people to buy their albums and show up for their concerts. Basically they could have put out nearly any pile of rubbish and people would still buy it, they just chose to put out this particular pile of rubbish, I don't know why they did and unless you're either a friend or relative of someone in the band I highly doubt you know either.

I'm not reading all that! O.O I'll read some, but not all

So you'll listen to pop if it's in Japanese and you can't understand it but not if it's relevant to you and your life?

lol, actually yes believe it or not, I like Russian and Japanese pop, Israeli Hardcore, French old skool (google search Aznavour), and Italian Opera

:D

Japanese pop and American pop aren't the same. I'm not saying that Japanese pop is all awesome and such... it' developed a nice amount cliched styles and images that are recycled quite often... but they're not all the same ones that developed in American pop, and there are artists that are even said to have a more "American style" sound. I can't say anything about Russia.

Yeah you got a point, japanese pop is much better. But there are few american pop songs I like.

I tend to prefer music where I understand the language the lyrics are in, even if I don't understand the lyrics.
