The Ballad of the Windfish with lyrics isn't actually in the game itself? That's tragic. I'll be bummed out if there isn't actually a full version of the song...

Anyway, thanks for this rip! The music is fantastic in this game...

Thanks for the upload. Actually I haven't downloaded it, but I came here to see if there was a release after getting the actual stream files from the game.

Obviously this has nothing to do with youor work ripping and releasing this, but I needed to say somewhere that I'm not liking this soundtrack as much as I had hoped. It suffers from some of the stupid tendencies some musicians/arrangers seem to have nowadays about removing/downplaying emphasis and highlight from the original that really punctuated the music with a satisfactory punch, and, on the other hand, adding colorful embellishment in other places where it's completelly counterproductive. Sadly, some of these affect some of the main themes from the game.
I'm not going to say that it's a complete failure, but my enthusiasm I had for this from the first impression when the game was revealed has deflated significantly after finally listening to the finished product!
Yes, I'm rather disappointed. There's plenty of good there, but these "little" things here and there where it matters the most are making a serious dent on the whole. What a pity.

I'm out of the loop, what's the story with this guy? EDIT: Nevermind, got it- he reposts people's work with ads, and then plops his website into the tracks's comment metadata. Yea, fuck that guy.

I'm only about halfway through, but do a bunch of the songs just abruptly cut out halfway through and then hang there for a few seconds before proceeding to the next one for anyone else? Both versions of Tal Tal Heights, the color dungeon, and a few others have so far.

@radorn, yeah after hearing richard's theme, im with you on that, the hell was that...

To be honest, there are many tracks in the original game that are all just quirky in their own right, and not that much of a melody, so I can agree to disagree with the arranger on his choices there, as it's more debatable whether they betray the spirit of original material. In others he seems to make a first half that is rather faithful to the original and then adds a second loop that departs further stylistically, like the file select BGM, to name one, which adds a second loop in a style that reminds me 100% of Paper Mario 2. That's OK I guess. I don't necesarily like the result, but I can live with it. But even there he's already doing the silly thing of omitting a note in the reply the tuba makes to the flute, for no good reason.
Also in the main overworld theme, there's this first phrase that loops twice, first with a tame transition that leads to the second loop and then a more climactic transition that leads into a different new phrase. In the original this is punctuated with a very satisfying high note contrasting with the main melody. In the remake, he plays the main melody with cellos, and completely removes the highlights, which, could well have been done with a violin. This anticlimax really puts me off, and I don't understand why he did that.
He also does this in the village theme. The original is very short, just a barely 30 second loop, so he extended it to four loops each one with a different arrangement of instruments. The last phrase of the loop slows down highlighted by high notes. In the remake, he either removes these entirely or subdues them so much, playing them so softly that it's like a feather. In the third loop of the remake he even plays a high pitched flute or ocarina to lead the melody, and it would seems like this time he'll do it right, but no, come the last phrase, it all crumbles down, deflating the climax completely. Seriously, what's wrong with this guy?

Then there are cases like the BGM for when you are in a house, which now sounds like some fever induced hallucination for some reason :|

I could continue but... I don't know, sometimes it seems to me that arrangers want to be "avant garde" or whatever, and they do nonsense like this thinking it's high brow, or that it spices things up, or that it's so emotional and delicate... but it just ends being disappointing and off-putting, like pouring salt in your tea.

Now, I'm not saying that changes and twists like those can't be done well. In fact there are plenty of examples arround with excellent arrangements that demonstrate just that, and I've enjoyed many of them greatly. But but as many as there are that are really good, there are just as many, or more, that are bafflingly nonsensical and terrible, and I just can't come up with any good excuse for them.

What were they thinking!?

On a positive note, I think he did a very good job with Tal Tal Mountains. No missing hihglights, no butchered climaxes... there's even plenty of spice wisely added to great effect, which my ears like a lot. There's just one instance, in the small inflection between the final climax of the loop and the fade into the next loop, where he overplays his hand with his silly embellishments, overemphasizing what in the original is a subdued little background climb contrasting with the main melody going down after the climax, he instead brings it to the forefront, reinforcing it with an orchestra hit. It's kind of annoying, but I can tolerate it, since it's surrounded with so much goodness.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I don't want to derail this too much.

I'll look into it, but as far as I'm concerned none have issues with playblack. I did notice some issue with the looping, though, but nothing severe.

Full version of the Japanese song is on the Japanese website now that the game has gone on sale.
Wonder if someone can extract it?

I expect the English version will be up on the US site tomorrow (maybe?).

For me it was the Terraria overworld day theme.

But yeah, I agree with a lot of your comments. I still like the OST but I think a few odd decisions keep it from being great.
