(http://www.imagebam.com/image/8bd3ca1250601954) Hey there fellow shriners, back with another Renegade Edit, today I want to share to you what has probably been my passion project for the last month or so (started planning this project last November) to create the newly improved version of the soundtrack to one of my favorite films Zodiac.
About 16 out of 20 of these songs are from other better quality albums, not like the songs used in the original album. If you have the original album, look at the waveform of Soul Sacrifice, it is literally nothing but an over 6 minute long brick wall, plus the sound quality was not that good to begin with.
My main goal was to use songs from the most memorable moments of the film, while using other songs to fit the time period between the late 60s to mid 80s, capture both the moments and time of the story. The only songs that were omitted from the original album were Mary's Blues and Solar, as I just felt those songs halted the overall flow I was going for this version of the album.
While I couldn't use David Shire's score, there were a few musical pieces I used such as Lalo Schifrin's theme for Dirty Harry, Main Titles from The Most Dangerous Game by Max Steiner, and Charles Ives' The Unanswered Question. I'm not gonna mention why they are used, but if you know the film and know the tracks, you'll understand why these are perfect for this album.
Most of these songs are in there original form, but there were a few of them that had to be heavily edit in order to fit the soundtrack under the 80 minute mark. Here are the the changes to those songs:
1. For Sky Pilot, I cut most of the war sounds and shortened the ending.
2. For Soul Sacrifice it was pretty simple, I edited exactly as heard from the film (around the title sequence). The original version is great (as well as the extended Woodstock version), but the film version just sounds more edgy and right to the point.
3. For Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic, I cut most of the mid part down. Even though I'm a huge fan of Isaac Hayes, I just felt that the song kept going on and on.
4. For Baker Street, I condensed the song, similar to the single version, but used the original version with the correct pitch and the right sound to get the best of both worlds.
Also, the songs are in chronological order, except for the musical pieces.
This is an absolute must have for anyone who loves the film, or anyone in general who loves songs from that time period, it is hands down one of the best soundtracks for a film.
