I came across this album listing a few weeks ago, and the title fascinated me. "BEST ANIME MIX" sounded like a full-CD megamix of 40 theme songs from across the Gundam universe, so I ordered it and imagined what it'd end up sounding like. Now that the CD's finally arrived, it's... pretty ok, actually. How's THAT for promotion?
While it is indeed a non-stop "mix" of 40 Gundam songs, it's certainly not any kind of club style, beat-matched affair. If you've ever heard any of the "ayu-mi-x ver. non-stop megamix" albums, this is definitely not that, lol. Some segues do line up pretty nicely, but many others just kind of connect the songs together in the way that a lot of live J-pop "medleys" are performed. Still, it's a pretty fun compilation of many of the "TV-Size" themes, just the thing to kick off your Gunpla session or whatever. God, I hate that word "Gunpla".

-MAY UPDATE-
(not quite) TEN YEARS AFTER... So, after living with this album a bit, I've grown more & more disappointed in it. Not for the musical content or the concept, but the execution. Simply put, many of the transitions are, to be polite, lazy. While I can hear the effort put into beat-matching a number of segues, very little effort seems to have gone into making them flow correctly. It's as if "DJ Caesar" spun up two tracks & just faded them into each other wherever they happened to line up, instead of following the 4-beat structure of each song. And then there's a handful of songs that literally come out of nowhere, and that just goes against the whole idea of a mixed album.
I decided to fix that. I broke out my copy of "Gundam Songs 145", then scoured the internets for lossless copies of the other songs, and re-compiled this collection into what I feel is much more in line with what it should have been from the start. I decided to keep the track order the same, which resulted in some fairly creative transitions if I say so myself. But, I'll also admit that some of my transitions are only marginally better than the original ones (and the last three tracks are lifted directly from the album, I don't know what possessed DJ Caesar to even try to link these together.)
Maybe you loved this album, maybe you were underwhelmed by it, maybe you've already deleted it. But here's an alternate take on it. And while I would've loved to have called this the "Newtype Edition", I think I've already let my ego run wild enough as it is, haha.

-JUNE UPDATE-
Since a 40-song limit still leaves out too many great Gundam songs, I decided to put together a companion album: Mobile Suit Gundam 40th Anniversary NEXT ANIME MIX. Like the original, it's comprised of 40 additional songs, many of them too good to ignore. Hell, maybe there's official plans for this already, I don't know. I don't seem to be on Sunrise's project consultation list. What I DO know is that it's a significantly better idea to arrange songs in relative BPM order when putting together a non-stop mix. I'm still trying to figure out what the game plan was behind the original album, probably something as unenthusiastic as my "custom" cover, haha.
