Isn't Maya... by itself... a 3D Model Designer? I don't think it really can create games by itself.

The only game things you can do with MAYA 6.5 is Game Enviroments and Character AI, but the AI is only reacting to the Game Enviroments.. SO you can't really make a game from it.

I respect your enthusiam, but like MogK said, Maya by itself can only develop 3D models - and to develop realistic 3D models, years of experience is required. Most game model designers have done 3 year college courses in multimedia design.

Also, like Sleep said, there is a lot more to developing a game than visuals. To actually program the game, you will require someone with a vast experience in a programming language. If you are developing for the PC, I suggest C++ - however, this is another language that requires years to master.

If you are really passionate about games development I suggest that you get into a course that will allow you to gain a degree and get a position in a game development company. In the long run, it will be much more satisfying.

Well, if you're really looking to create a 3D game by yourself (and i'm warning you, it will take a very long time, and there is no way to stay ahead of the development curve), all you really need is a 3D modelling suite (like MAYA) and an IDE (integrated development environment) to program in. If you are looking to program in DirectX - and if you're using 3D, it's pretty much your only choice - the best suite is Visual Studio .net 2003. (unless you're using 'other' means, in which 2005 is available... in beta form).

If you're looking for another 3D suite, 3D Studio MAX by Kinetix is used by most developers in the industry - MAYA is more for FMV. It is a lot easier to use MAX and intergrate it into programs.

I am currently using 3DSMAX (go to my gallery for pics) i find it the perfect tool to possibly get into the games industry. Raidenex is right, MAYA is used more for FMV, which personaly, i don`t want to do.

Also, i am thinking of getting into mods (half life 2 especially), i hear it`s a hot ticket into the games industry. Plus, you can import 3DSMAX into most mod builders.

thanks for the input guys i understand maya is a 3d model designer and i want to use maya to make the characters and cut scenes i am currently saving up for a university course but it is expensive!!!! i want something with a similar look to VII but with better models (models will be about grandia 2 style) this is far from a professional project and will be freely distributed. (possibly by bittorrent) i have done courses at college for graphic design and an animation course but those programs were a little old so yes university is a good idea .... anyhow i will keep at it
cheers

I'm C++ programmer. I've even made a small directx engine before. If I get all ambitious later this summer I might be up for something...maybe. I would want to create something entirely new rather than cloning though. I guess thats something to keep in mind.
