Description:

Beginning in 2014, an ongoing series of concerts of composer Akira Ifukube's music were organized in honor of the composer's 100th birthday. The first three concerts focused on Akira Ifukube's film music career, featuring suites from the composer's well known film scores, as well as obscure scores. These three concerts were all performed in 2014, with CD albums of the concerts released between 2014 and 2015. An additional 'Best of' album was released in 2016. It compiled the best suites from the three concerts, including a suite from the third concert that never made it on the third concert's CD release.

Also in 2016, a fourth concert was organized and performed. A CD release of the concert was released on May 31, 2017 (Akira Ifukube's 103rd birthday). It featured "Homage to Akira Ifukube", "Rhythmic Games for Children" (1949), Suite "Ivan and the Pony" (a suite assembled from the score to artist Seiji Fujishiro's shadow puppet play "The Humpbacked Pony" (1953/1975)) and selections from the score to "Gauche the Cellist" (1953). The album is available in another thread.

On April 30, 2017, a fifth concert was performed. This is the CD release of the concert, which was released on May 24, 2018. It features suites from three documentaries ("PR Film" Suite), "Daimajin" (1966), "King Kong Escapes" (1967), "Destroy All Monsters" (1968) and "Akira Ifukube 100th Anniversary" Suite, a collection of Ifukube's music that was used in "Shin Godzilla" (2016). As for the "PR Film" Suite, I was only able to find information on "Vitamin B1". It's full title roughly translates to "Advancing Vitamin B1". The film was produced by Nichiei Science Films and released on April 4, 1957.

It's interesting to hear just how much he influenced contemporary late 20th century composers. There's a section in that suite starting at about 4:20 that is identical to a short melodramatic touch in cheek cue towards the end of 'Batman Returns' where the Penguin is being dragged into the water by all the little penguins.

Most surprising is how young he was when he composed the music for the 'National Forestry' trilogy and that he started composing exclusively only because he couldn't continue as a forest ranger due to an injury.

I never noticed that! I'll keep my ears open when I next see the film.

Ifukube loved nature all his life, and it showed when he scored "Kushiro Marshland" in 1993. I actually read something somewhere where Ifukube stated that he loved scoring documentary films. He definitely scored a lot of them.

It wouldn't have been possible for Anno to gain inspiration from this suite as the concert was performed in 2017. The 100th Anniversary is based on the Ifukube selections in "Shin Godzilla" though. In fact, that's what was stated in the concert poster/flyer.
