Greetings,

So as not to get lost in the BR soundtrack threads, I've made a dedicated thread for this. Worked on over a three year period, this is my reconstruction of the Blade Runner score as it was used in the Final Cut, without dialogue or sound effects. At the end of 2017 I released a beta version of this project, titled the 35th Anniversary Edition. After more work to improve the edits, I present to you the final version, the 2019 Edition. This is every cue as heard in the movie, essentially an isolated score version of the film, including a number of cues that have been unavailable in complete or correct form.

I could not have accomplished this without generous help from DC and Calidoran, both of whom provided me with the raw material for much of this work. Especially useful were the surround channels from half a dozen international blu-ray releases of the film, from which I was able to extract music that hasn't been available previously. DC also graciously offered to master the audio, to give it a little extra polish.

I also want to express my gratitude to everyone who made compilations of this music before me. Your work provided me with a guide, without which I would have been lost.

I started on this project out of curiosity and it slowly became an obsession, and along the way I believe I have corrected several errors featured on previous bootlegs. The cue typically referred to as "Roy Enters the Bradbury," for instance, actually corresponds to the scene "Show Me What You're Made Of." The actual cue for "Roy Enters The Bradbury" is a reprise of "Pris Meets JF Sebastian" without the overlay of Ogi No Mato. The Japanese tracks, thanks to DC, are now correctly identified, and I've placed them where they appear in the film.

As a bonus, I've compiled two discs of full length, alternate and unused tracks, and there's a pdf of notes on the tracks where clarification is needed.

Thanks to everyone for your patience. I know some of you have been waiting a long time for this project. I hope you enjoy it.

DISC 1
01. Main Titles/Prologue/Los Angeles November 2019

3. Would You Come After Me?/I Dreamt Music (Workprint)
4. Love Theme (clean start without piano - the standard version)
5. The Prodigal Son Brings Death (longer edit)
6. Rachaels Song (Vangelis engineer Raine Hilson has said that this track was originally composed for the scene where Roy finds Pris; it has nothing to do with Rachael)

8. Wounded Animals [Deckard and Roys Duel] (full length version)
9. Rachael Sleeps [Unveiled Twinkling Space] (full length version)

11. Would You Come After Me? (full length version)
12. I Dreamt Music (piano only - Workprint)
13. I Dreamt Music [Desolation Path] (Workprint - full length version)

The last three tracks there are the individual parts used to create the Workprint version of track 3, disc 4, which uses an edit of "Desolation Path" (later replaced by the Love Theme)

Damask Rose doesn't appear in the film. It's one of those "inspired by" tracks that Vangelis released with his Blade Runner Trilogy set.

I believe it was the Hungarian version that had the cleanest of those channels. I tried a number of ways to get rid of that but this was unfortunately the best I could do. If I'm ever able to improve on this, I will offer a patch for this track.

I'm working on that, yes. It's become a rather long essay (about 30 pages so far) plus appendices. One appendix is the Q&A that Raine Hilson did on google groups in 2010, rearranged so that it reads more smoothly, like a proper interview. I haven't edited the content, mind you, just the order so that it makes sense. Another section is an examination of the Workprint music, including identification of some of those library cues, and the differences between the Theatrical Cut and the Director's Cut/Final Cut. And the cue-by-cue walk through as well as an overview of the score and Ridley Scott and Terry Rawlings' roles in fitting it to the film. As with all my projects, it's grown far beyond what I had originally planned! I'm considering selling it as a small e-book on Amazon.com for a low price, like $2.00, but I'm still thinking about that.

Thanks so very much for this exceptional release. Your work is superb; the release sounds crisp and fantastic overall.

A couple of technical questions, if you are able to answer.

Were all of these tracks kept as lossless as possible, ie, no lossy compression intermediaries along the way to encoding the final FLACs?

In particular I see in the notes that tracks 9 and 13 on the bonus disc are sourced from LPs and "digitally declicked." What were your original sources for these tracks? .FLACs and / or lossless .wavs captured directly by you from the original LPs? Unknown? Lossy, or lossless? What program did you use to "declick"? Some quality loss is inevitable in "declicking." Is it possible for you to provide alternate *unprocessed* versons of these tracks -- the raw 16-bit PCM captures instead?

Hi Billy Bob,

Every track was worked on using lossless files, and the material I pulled from Blu-ray was 24/48 downrezzed for final files to 16/44 (without dithering). Only track 9 was sourced from LP, a file that DC sent me, which is "out there," as they say. I used ClickRepair, which is the least intrusive program I've found for declicking vinyl -- it allows you to listen to what's being removed and adjust your settings accordingly. I always use a very low setting and manually removed some clicks in order to preserve the sound quality of the track. I up-rezzed the file so as not to lose any bits in the processing. I'd like to do a rip of that LP myself one day in hi-rez, but I haven't found a copy yet. The CD, unfortunately, is poorly mastered and wasn't suitable to use for this project.

Thanks very much for your detailed reply! It is obvious that you paid very close attention to collating all the tracks in the highest possible quality. My mind is at ease -- this release is truly the new definitive BLADE RUNNER soundtrack release. It seems you've spared no fine detail or cut any corners in the technical department; for that I'm immensely grateful.

I shall have to try ClickRepair. The only time I fooled with "click repair" / declicking was YEARS ago with Youngglove's Cool Edit script. The results were mediocre, and that was supposedly 'the best" back in the day. So, I never messed with declicking after that, but if anything has changed for the better in the 10+-year interim, perhaps ClickRepair is worth a try and declicking is up for reassessment.

I used 'ClickRepair' couple of times recently, and it always went flawlessly. There's a small loss of quality (mostly the lower frequencies), yes, but you get a clean track in return. And as SlvrHmrm said, play with the settings, you'll be amazed what it can do.

I'm happy to announce that, as an extra bonus and with the help of DC and Jabberwocky711, I'm preparing a set of the complete Workprint cues, including ALL of the source cues appearing from "Deckard Enters the Bradbury" to the end of the film. There are quite a few differences in the score prior to that, too. Look for that release soon!

Quick question; A while back ago I heard this track where the scene where Deckard is viewing an image, talking about "stop, pull back, enhance" etc, is mixed with another song.
I think it was the opening track from the OST, but it could be something else..

Here is the scene in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHepKd38pr0

Has anyone here heard the same track? I would be grateful if someone could help me find this track. It's got a really great mood to it!

I finally had a chance to listen to this and I am sad to report that I was very disappointed in this episode of the Art of the Score podcast. They usually nail it, but they here they make a number of errors based on faulty information that's been circulating too long. I wish I'd sent them my reconstruction of the score before they did this. I could have helped steer them clear of some of the mistakes.

You're right, not as insightful as they usually are :-(
Perhaps it not being a traditional score made it harder to breakdown, they did seem a little scared of it.
Not saying I'd have done any better by any means :-)
Perhaps you should still send them your reconstruction & notes.

Not too bad... though it didn't nail it right on some occasions as SH pointed out. There are things that only come out having to mess on a daily basic with the actual hardware... and that's why those type of sounds are hard to be heard now... Thanks for pointing the episode to the forum! ;)

The musician did an admirable job attempting to recreate the opening theme, but I think they just needed more time to research. As you say, we've had years at this, so I have to give them some credit for even trying!

Now we're talking. :)

"Chidori no Kyoku" "Ogi no Mato" and "Hana no Tabi"... so B5historyman might got it right on Chidori no Kyoku all along... but the bits about that discussion went lost with the previous thread unfortunately.

That they messed with japanese music we know too well... what they have been sampling and editing we don't. We guessed right on some occasions though.

If that comes from the original editing done on the workprint the workflow might point us to the right directions.
And it could be that they simply used another obscure folk record to fill in the soundscapes.

Translation of "Hana no Tabi" could be "Every Flower"... but getting further info on that from this side of the ocean is a bit tricky... could you please point us to the review you were mentioning?

I'm glad with your responses.

at first, this is the link that i found the title "Hana no Tabi"
this 2nd review. off course with language japanese...

https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E7%94%9F%E7%94%B0%E6%B5%81%E7%AE%8F%E6%9B%B2%E5%9 0%8D%E6%9B%B2%E9%9B%86-%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC%E3%81%AE%E9%9F%B3%E6%A5%BD%E3%8 3%BB%E6%A5%BD%E5%99%A8/dp/B00005F35H

and i have no ideas, who is this man, why he know this, and why he wrote this here...
this is the CD about traditional japanese KOTO music.

and "Hana no Tabi" (花の旅)means like "journey of flower"
i found almost nothing about this song with language english.
but only this (german?) page. track 5

We do not know if "Chidori no Kyoku" was supervised by Vangelis.
Nor we know if "Hana no Tabi" was recorded with japanese musician at Nemo Studios.
We can only speculate on that.
The facts remain with the sound editors I'm afraid.

Anyways the obscure track is tooooo short :(

This is a short excerpt of "Hana no Tabi (https://www.komuso.com/audio/16%20---%20Track%204.mp3)" as performed by The International Shakuhachi Society on the "Sokyoku Jiuta Taikei 16 (https://www.komuso.com/albums/albums.pl?album=1206&lang=6)" album on Victor - VICG 40125.

I think it might be it. Go and fetch that record now... not sure about the version on the cd... :(

Enjoying your investigation!
Is it the piece of music used in "Deckard Enters The Bradbury (with overlay of “Hito-me”- Japanese Traditional Music, actual title unknown)" you're trying to identify?

The 60 discs boxset might be our only chance perhaps...

They must have used some japanese folk music vinyl recorded before 1982 and available at the time... go guess... but at least we are on the right track. :)

Yes. We are. :)

It might be quite an impossible task most likely... but at least we were able to nail down some of the remaining nails about the soundtrack! :)

I saw earlier that film editor Terry Rawlings passed away today. In addition to his important contributions to Blade Runner, Rawlings edited Alien and Chariots of Fire, for which he received an Oscar nomination.

Oh my. :(

In the opening of the sci-fi classic Blade Runner (1982), Rawlings receives a "supervising editor" credit. "I was the only editor, and the reason I had to have that [credit] was I wasn't a member of the American union then," he
recalled (https://vimeo.com/45239409) in a 2012 interview.

"To work over in America was very difficult, because of union problems, and I had to work on the film in a little hotel place because I wasn't allowed at Warner Bros. to cut it there."

The studio hired Marsha Nakashima as a cover, and she received an "editor" credit at the end of the movie.

Blade Runner is notorious for its multiple versions and changes requested by studio executives after the film underperformed upon its debut.

"When it was first taken to America, it was with no commentary, and it ended with them [Harrison Ford and Sean Young] going through the doors. And when we ran it over there, people were saying, 'We don't understand it.' Nobody understood it to start with, it was so ahead of its time," explained Rawlings.

A solution was to introduce the now-famous Ford voiceover, and the film's ending was changed to a happier, more upbeat finale using aerial footage shot from The Shining.

The voiceover was eventually removed in subsequent rereleases after a screening error in a Santa Monica cinema showed the original cut one night.

"I think it's great when the door closes," Rawlings said. "You make up your own mind. They're not going off holding hands in a car, which was dreadful."

I'm very grateful to everyone for their interest in this project. I hope you're all enjoying it!

I'm trying to identify the instrument used to make the harp-like flourishes heard in the "Los Angeles 2019" cue and other places in the score, and it's been suggested that it's a santour or a santouri. Do we have any confirmation of this from any interviews or photos from the time?

Looking around on youtube I see examples of the instrument played in the traditional way with the small mallets, but not strummed as Vangelis would have done for Blade Runner. It does sound very similar, however.
