Nanook of the North
[Robert Flaherty, 1922)

This film - which can justifiably be called the first docudrama in the history of the film - tells the story of an Eskimo family in the Hudson Bay. Nanook, his wife Nyla and their children lead a dogged struggle against hunger and the elements, without the help of modern technology or any form of comfort.

With financial sponsoring from the French fur company Revillon, the director, Robert Flaherty, was able to spend almost two years with the Eskimos shooting this film. ln spite of the grim conditions and the fact that he only had a single camera at his disposai it was a cinematographic sucees
from beginning to end, in part because of the close ties between Flaherty and the Eskimos.Although it is now over seventy years old (1922), the film has lost none of its documentary value, its humour, nor its tension.

To mark its celebration of a century of cinematography, the Filmhuis Mechelen commissioned Andr Goudbeek (1946) to compose music for this docudrama. Andr Goudbeek, alto-saxophone, bass-clarinet and bandoneon, was leader of the Full Moon Trio from 1969 to 1976. He was one of the cofounders of WIM [Workgroup Improvising Musicians) in 1972, and he has continued to work regularly since with Fred van Hove and Ivo Vander Borght. From 1977 he gained European recognition with the saxophone duo Tchicai- Goudbeek.

After a short period in 1981-82, working with the Brotherhood of Breath, led by the South African pianist Chris McGregor, he was a permanent member, from '82 until the end of '93, of the Outch Willem Breuker Kollektief. He is regarded as one of the leading saxophonists in the new European improvised music scene.
To perform the music for the film, he has brought together several highlytalented Flemish musicians to form the quartet NaNOOK: Bart Maris (1965), an inventive trumpeter with a rich range of sonorities; Kris Ouerinckx (1968),a subtle and lightening-quick drummer, and the very young pianist, Remko
Oevroede (1973) who plays such an integral part in this quartet.
