Final Fantasy Rumble 5.0--now with fancy numbers! [Archive]

It's that time of year again! I bring you the fifth annual Final Fantasy Music Rumble.

This is a Final Fantasy music knock-out game.

128 songs from the main Final Fantasy series (1-15) will be randomly paired head-to-head. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to pick a winner in each pairing.

* I will be posting the match-ups in groups of 8 every few days, but all brackets (A-H) will remain open until r2, so feel free to go back and vote if you missed one.

* The first round will remain open at least until 7 people vote.

* 8 tracks made the cut for the first time this year. There will be two new representatives each from Final Fantasy 1 and 15, and one a piece from 3, 4, 11, and 13. 19 established tracks that failed to qualify last year will be making a return. That makes 27 total entries in this year's rumble that did not appear in 2017.

* Tracks will be listed with their cumulative total votes through 2017.

* There is absolutely no standard criteria for voting.

* In the event of a tie, the statistical underdog always wins.

* New this year: Given the large turnout last year, some software issues on Dragonmount, and my aim to keep this a primarily FFShrine-based game, I will not be accepting off-site votes this year. Instead, I will extend invitations for people to come here and participate.

* New this year: Stats! Stats stats and more stats! I converted my game spreadsheets to a database over the last year because after five years this was just becoming too bulky to run through excel. Besides making the game a heck of a lot easier to run, this also had the side-effect of allowing me to generate just about any game-related statistic you can think of really easily. I will be sharing a lot of these, but not until the 2018 game is complete!

* New this year: DO NOT edit vote changes into your original posts. Make a new post. Due to the way I am counting these now, a change will very likely be overlooked if you edit it in.

If you're curious, last year's winner was Final Fantasy VII - Still More Fighting.
It beat Final Fantasy VII - One-Winged Angel 7-4 in the finals.
The semi-finalists were Final Fantasy VI - The Mines of Narshe and Final Fantasy X - The Sight of Spira.
The Dreaful Fight (FF4), Liberi Fatali (FF8), Freya's Theme (FF9), and Song of Memories (FF9) made it to the quarterfinals.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I'm automatically logged out after every session. I still get a bunch of malware no matter what device I use. It's frustrating.

I have to say, this is some crazy rumble so far...

Airship against Fierce Battle? i mean what are you talking about? I love airship cause it reminds me of the ff9 airship track (the invincible)

but man... so difficult. Intriguingly, i love listening to fierce battle on repeat.

I won't say it's as good as the decisive battle, but man...

ff7 fan boy is coming out of me too lol

The ff15 tracks are good. I just find it quite intriguing that there's an obvious difference based on the fact you aren't entering towns, or even meeting people to a degree, and a track for every mood associated with gameplay. None of those thematic tracks which defined the early games. I'll post my tracks here when i have heard them.

Kind of inevitable with FFShrine's current issues, but getting new participants to register here for this game was impossible, and the site I had been allowing off-site voting on in previous years is also broken in its own way, and there's a lot of interest in this on the new forum I took it to instead, so expect a lot of off-site votes this year. Wasn't quite my intention, but that's how it worked out. The qualification round is still going to be exclusive to the Shrine so long as we still exist here. ;)

Cool. I could blow this up into a 50+ participant thing pretty easily, I think, but I like keeping it smallish because the more players the more everything is just going to normalize into the same dozen classic tracks winning everything always. Vamo Alla Flamenco vs Ronfaure in a final was epic.

So basically I was aiming for 10ish this year but am expecting something more like 15-20 depending on how many people who expressed interest actually show up. We'll see what happens; round 1's still open for most of May and I've got 11 voters so far.

I would love to see this continue, but I don't want to see this continue on reddit. I know I was the one who mentioned it before. There's so many people that it would just devolve into the same top songs. I like our group here, we keep it fun. The only thing I could see, would be to making a closed group in reddit. That way it's still just us, and a few chosen others, without the malware.

I've never used KH Insider, but I know it's big on music, so that's worth looking into.

Video Game Forums (http://www.vgf.com) has a music subforum (not exclusively for games) and I've played some Mafia with them, seems like a fairly decent crew.

Eyes on FF (http://home.eyesonff.com) still exists. I got randomly invited into their Discord server like a year ago and have been lurking around; the place seems fairly active.

My main forum community has nothing to do with video games, but a bunch of nerds camp out there so their "Other Games" subforum is always in play haha

I think there are a lot of options.

Could be fun searching around to find one that fits.

Disappointing bracket for me in so far as I didn't really get to put much thought into it. The last two pairings were the only ones I had to sit on for a minute. Mostly these are tracks I love paired against ones I dislike, or at least there's no contest head-to-head.

:o That's awesome if it's true. I'm not going to throw more confusion into the mix at this point but I'll definitely get the votes to come here next year if it's still working right.

Off-site voting has trickled down to 1 dude anyway; I'm guessing a lot of people forgot about it because I haven't been trying to sell it and one or two will pop in when all the Round 1 groups are posted to close out. So it's working out to about the same amount of voters as previous years and I like that.

Red Wings ~~a few weeks ago, this would have been a tough call. In replaying FF4, the one big thing that stuck out to me musically was the situational usage of this tune. It might start out as the theme to the Red Wings fleet, but throughout the game it progresses into this sort of anthem of resolute determination. When bad shit happens and the characters want to give up but press on anyway, cue the Red Wings anthem.

Round 1 is complete! 11 out of the remaining 64 contenders are advancing for their first time, and 3 of them are new to the game entirely, so that's something. The top 15 got decimated again (7 advancing to 8 eliminated), which I for one enjoy seeing. Dancing Mad has finally passed on its throne at the top of the board to Still More Fighting, and nothing can change that because it was eliminated by 55th-ranked Skycity of Bhujerba. Wow, didn't see that coming. To put it in context, Dancing Mad had never previously been eliminated before the 4th round. With Vamo Alla Flamenco also losing (to Home Sweet Home), two out of four past champions remain in Bombing Mission and Still More Fighting.

There were a number of huge upsets. 8th-ranked One-Winged Angel got decisively beaten down by 143rd-ranked Kingdom Baron. I guess we all heard our fill of it last year. I don't know if it's an upset so much as a really hot new addition to the line-up, but 10th-ranked Main Theme (FF4) lost to new FF15 arrival Valse di Fantastica. FF15's 134th-ranked Magna Insomnia also managed to knock out 17th-ranked Prelude in a not-remotely-close outcome. And while numerically it might not be a huge upset, I was really startled to see 83rd-ranked Eternal Wind lose to 163rd-ranked The Day Will Come. This track had previously amassed 1 total vote ever across four years.

Don't worry though; the top 12 eliminated tracks bypass the qualification round, so you'll be seeing Dancing Mad, Vamo Alla Flamenco, The Dreadful Fight, One-Winged Angel, Main Theme (FF4), Valley of the Fallen Star, Phantom Train, Aerith's Theme, Prelude, Song of Memories, Awakened Forest, and The Mines of Narshe again next year.

Oh yeah, there were some pretty decisive victories too. Still More Fighting handed The Spy an embarrassing 12-0 loss. Clash on the Big Bridge, The Place I'll Return to Someday, and Troian Beauty all went 8-0 against Main Theme (FF2), Battle Scene (FF2), and Steel Reason respectively. There were so many 7+ to 1 wins that I'm not going to bother listing them. On the whole we had a lot of blowouts and a lot of ties, without much in between.

Despite FF2's horrible performance, it remains alive. The same can't be said for FF1. It becomes the only game besides, heh, FF2, to be eliminated in the first round twice.

All-Time Round 1 Performance Stats

2018 saw FF4 overtake FF7 to reclaim the position of most popular all-time. FF9 had the highest vote percentage this year, making it, oddly enough, the only game to ever earn that title twice. The most unusual turnout was FF11 taking 3rd place. It had previously never done better than 6th. FF2 did remarkably poorly again. With 22.2% of votes in its favor, it has managed the worst record three years in a row and the third worst performance all-time.

Valse di Fantastica ~~damn, something about On Windy Meadows being the first track of this round really made me fall in love with it. Just has this strong kicking off an adventure vibe. Unfortunately for it, Valse di Fantastica is breathtaking.
Tower of Bab-il ~~couldn't have paired two more different tracks here. Both are great in very different ways. Came in expecting to vote Wailers but Tower of Bab-il ultimately won out.
Fighting Fate ~~The Four Warriors of Dawn is great, but I feel like there's no contest here.
Final Battle ~~not a big fan of either tbh
Eruyt Village ~~ok back to brutally difficult match-ups heh

Valse di Fantastica - favorite FFXV song. Kind of reminds me of some of Yuki Kajiura's stuff. The other one is nice though.

Within the Giant ~The real test of this bracket for me. Two powerful tracks accustomed to going deep. I think Within the Giant holds up better over extended play, but it's pretty close.
Chateau d'Oraguille ~I mean, Still More Fighting just won so that helps ease the decision.
Anxiety ~this is one of those tracks that really took the full five years to grow on me
The Castle ~Fight 2 is has been kind of the opposite for me. I still enjoy it, but maybe not as much as I used to. The Castle is great.
Tower of Mages ~Not my favorite NES era track by a long shot, but it's nice. i don't think I vote either of these tracks past the second round in most scenarios.
Prologue ~any other year I think I vote FF9 here, but I just played 4 and I'm really feeling the power of those SNES orchestral tunes.

Sealed Away (FF5, 14) i was surprised on this one, i think i identified with this theme a lot in ff5. kind of being the cid and mid theme.

The Place I'll Return to Someday (FF9, 50) now this deserves an explanation hah. I love prologue's versatility. I had no idea that they could use the same song for so many thematic story passages. However, the place i'll return to someday literally captures the essence of the game for me. I loved this song from the first time that I heard it hah. that first day when I went into the game shop and saw the game lol. Truly crazy song for this game's story.

Heaven's Tower ~Legitimately still can't feel any connection to Liberi Fatali. God knows I keep trying lol
J-E-N-O-V-A ~rip Starlight Celebration, you're one of my favorite soft peaceful FF tunes but J-E-N-O-V-A is just too good.
Clash on the Big Bridge ~This is the worst decision of the round. Ugh. I think Skycity of Bhujerba is the most underappreciated song in this game. But Clash was my favorite FF tune as a kid, and a lot of that nostalgia resurfaced when I replayed the game last month. It's probably the FF track I'm most excited about this year. It or Red Wings. Gotta go here.
The Extreme ~I could maybe swap here. I dunno, need to revisit it in a day or two. The Extreme has more direct appeal, but Empire Gestahl sets such a vivid mood...

Another fun thing about this game is that nothing stops us from continuing to grow it.

I don't want to ever permanently remove tracks. Everything in here was hand picked by someone and it's not like we have hundreds of participants. I also want to maintain some sort of buffer where the top ranked tracks to lose in the first round don't have to do the qualification gig. We've already seen the #1 and #2 seeds rand each other in the first round. A potential scenario where one of them is eliminated before the game even starts is lame.

So what I think I'm going to do is add a second tier to the qualifications to accommodate future additions (and I might expand this in future years to allow more qualification byes, I dunno). For now, I'm going to make the lowest ranking tracks that have been available to be voted all five years tough out two rounds in the qualifications, and next year I'll expand that to include the 2006 additions.

Got something you want to add? Let's hear it. Since I'm adding a 16th FF8 track, one new song from 4, 6 and 7 is fair game too.

Round 2 is complete!

Final Fantasy 3 has been eliminated, joining FF1 in the losers' circle. In a somewhat atypical twist, all other games are still alive moving into the round of 32. One first-timer is still alive in Valse di Fantastica (FF15). The two past winners that were not eliminated in the first round--Bombing Mission and Still More Fighting--both won decisively against pretty tough competition. Is this the making of a repeat winner? That's up to you.

Upsets... There weren't many drastic ones really. 163rd-ranked The Day Will Come beating anyone is an upset, though its round 2 competitor was a lower rank than round 1. 43rd-ranked Home Sweet Home came in at a good place, but continues to impress with wins over 4th-ranked Vamo Alla Flamenco and 9th-ranked Opening Theme. Random.org isn't cutting it any breaks for round 3, as you'll see soon enough.

By the numbers, the biggest upset was Magna Insomnia (134th) beating Ronfaure (24th), but given it only appeared for the first time last year, the point gap might be misleading. That 110 gap was followed by Illusionary World beating Troops March On (83 point difference) and Melancholia beating Eruyt Village (69 point difference). I suppose the biggest story of the game so far is FF15 is doing pretty dang well.

Round 3 is complete!

Once again, the historically dominant tracks are holding strong. 134th-ranked Illusionary World beating 20th-ranked Find Your Way was the only upset outside of the FF15 entries. We did have a really close call though. 2015 champion Bombing Mission barely squeaked by 5-4 against FF11's Anxiety on a last minute vote. The Castle dominated Tower of Mages 9-0, and The Decisive Battle nearly accomplished the same over Kingdom Baron, 8-1. FFs 2, 12, 13, and 14 all join the losers circle.

But the big story of this year is panning out to be Final Fantasy 15. With three tracks alive going into the round of 16, it's keeping pace with FF9 as the most successful game of 2018 so far.

Round 4 coming up probably as soon as the Uruguay KSA match ends. :)

Dark Messenger ~~Listened to Magna Insomnia first and thought "yeah I'm always voting here", put on Dark Messenger just to keep it honest and �\_(ツ)_/� . I haven't been a huge Dark Messenger fan over the years, but I'm really feeling it this run.
Devil's Lab ~~Happy to see one of the FF6 zone themes going deep again. Uematsu managed to give the dungeons in this game so much unique flavor. I think FF6 might be the best in the series at that.
Still More Fighting ~~Probably the closest I've come to voting Liberi Fatali. Love this tune, but I'm not keen on voting recent champions. Still just can't get into Liberi Fatali for the life of me though. Maybe that will change when I replay the game. I'm getting there. Should be wrapping up FF6 this week.
Freya's Theme ~~Felt kind of easy. To Zanarkand doesn't move me as much as it used to. Not sure why, used to vote for it all the time.
Illusionary World ~~This track being alive is the biggest surprise of the tournament, and I'm not complaining.
The Castle ~~Ouch

Round 4:

Dark Messenger (FF9, 87) - One of the Top 3 FF9 tracks verses...FF15. Yeah, not hard at all.

Devil's Lab (FF6, 64) - FF7's is probably the better track, but FF6's just kind of sticks with you.

Still More Fighting (FF7, 124) - This was hard, my love of FF8 barely lost toe the more musically enjoyable track.

To Zanarkand (FF10, 78) - No contest, this is one of the best FF opening songs.

Illusionary World (FF4, 18) - Again. FF15 just can't complete with nostalgia.

The Castle (FF8, 74) - FF8 sticks with you more, plus FF9's track has a better version out there.

Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 71) - I love airship tracks, but FF5's is one of the best battle songs in the SERIES.

The Decisive Battle (FF6, 74) - Kind of hard...but nostalgia won out.

The titles are dropping like flies now. FF4, FF6, FF10, and FF11 have all been eliminated. Five out of 15 games live on, including two entries from the newest installment. (Given how post-11 releases have consistently struggled here, that's quite a feat.)

There won't be any big upsets moving forward. Every remaining track enjoyed top 25 status coming into this year save the relatively untested FF15 entries. But my new book keeping system does make it easy to compare previous years. Two of the round of 16 pairings have happened before. In 2014, Clash on the Big Bridge knocked out Airship at this stage 7-1. This year it won 7-2. I guess not much has changed there. The Castle, on the other hand, lost to The Place I'll Return to Someday in the third round of 2015 2-4. This year it won 6-3. All of the quarter final pairings are meeting for the first time, though in a few cases probably not the last.

And lastly, two previous champions are still alive! None had achieved a run this deep after winning since Dancing Mad in 2015.

Final Fantasy 2018 Final

Freya's Theme (FF9) had a statistically easy run of the tournament (average opponent rank of 65.6), but it dominated everything below its 13th place slot coming in, and it achieved back-to-back entries into the quarter-finals. After knocking out unranked Stand Your Ground and 128th-ranked Daughter of the Great Summoner 7-1 and 7-2 respectively, it made its strength as a contender this year known by pulling off another 7-2 performance against 43rd-ranked Home Sweet Home (which had just beaten the tracks in 4th and 9th place.) 12th-ranked To Zanarkand finally managed to swing some votes, forcing a 5-4 close call, but 7-2 dominance returned in the quarter-finals to put an end to 143rd-ranked Melancholia's surprisingly deep run. The big test came in the semi-finals. Last year's winner and 2nd all-time Still More Fighting was on track to sweep the tournament again. It had knocked out Freya's Theme 6-4 last year, and historical voting records heavily favored it among the active participants this year. (More new stats at my disposal. Yay.) Freya's Theme unexpectedly pulled through 5-4, and here we are.

Dark Messenger (FF9) faced a statistically tougher field, though still well within the normal range, averaging a rank of 52.3. A perennial contender, it came into this year ranked 6th all-time and tied Still More Fighting as the only other entry with three quarter-final appearances. After easy wins against 88th-ranked Cursed Earth and 61st-ranked Succession of Witches 7-1 and 6-2 respectively, it ran up against 5th-ranked The Extreme for the first time ever and walked away the clear winner, 5-3. Mirroring Freya's Theme, it delivered a 7-2 pummeling on an FF15 upstart, eliminating 134th-ranked Magna Insomnia. 2015 champion and 3rd all-time Bombing Mission fell 6-3 in the quarter-finals. It took 23rd-ranked Clash on the Big Bridge in the semis to finally put up a serious challenge, and Dark Messenger squeaked by 5-4, bringing about an arguably long overdue first appearance in the final match.

In our second single-game final, Freya's Theme knocks out Dark Messenger 6-3 to become the 2018 champion.

Freya's Theme was also this year's point leader with 44, moving it from 13th place to 4th. With 1108 total votes cast, this was the second biggest turnout we've had.

Dark Messenger, Clash on the Big Bridge, and Still More Fighting somehow all managed to tie for the second most votes this year, with 39. They've each got a slot in the top 10 to show for it.

Still More Fighting has finally dethroned Dancing Mad to become the only other track to hold the title of most votes all time. And with a 30 vote cushion, that might stand for a while.
