As the nominees for The Golden Globes are announced, awards season has really begun. So I thought I would make a thread and ask what your choices are for an Academy Award nomination.

Mine are:
Alexandre Desplat - The Shape Of Water
Patrick Doyle - Murder On The Orient Express
Thomas Newman - Victoria & Abdul
John Williams - The Post
Rupert Gregson-Williams - Wonder Woman
Hans Zimmer - Dunkirk

Write your thoughts down below and I'll look if I can make a document and after de nominations I'll let you know who the winner should be according to your predictions.

Yeah... I think Desplat deserves an oscar, maybe even 2 because he's a great composer, but in 2015 Interstellar should haver won.

In 2015 Interstellar should have won.

Absolutely.

---------- Post added at 06:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:39 PM ----------

My hopes are:
Blade Runner 2049
Logan
War for the Planet of the Apes

I guess that Thomas Newman will get his usual nomination and that The Last Jedi could be a serious contender.

I haven't really watched / listened to many other "Oscar condender" scores, so I cannot really tell.

But as you said, I cannot really tell

I really didn't like the shape of water soundtrack but I think Desplat will win the Oscar. My wishes of course goes to Hans but if he didn't got it for interstellar will he get it for Dunkirk i can't judge.

It seems like I'm in the minority here but I really didn't like the War for the planet of the apes score at all, in fact it took me out of the movie which I also thought was pretty boring. I hope Dunkirk wins because it's a fantastic score that really supports the movie but I'd love to see Blade runner 2049, the post and shape of water get nominated because they're also very interesting scores.

BR may be my favorite score of the year, but it's not going to be a nominee. Just not in the same caliber as some other scores this year.

Dario Marianelli - Darkest Hour
Daniel Pemberton - King Arthur | Legend Of The Sword
Thomas Newman - Victoria & Abdul
Patrick Doyle - Murder On The Orient Express

This is more a wishful thinking than a prediction ... :)

1. Patrick Doyle - "Murder on the Orient Express" (This score was splendid!)
2. Alexandre Desplat - "The Shape of Water" (For me the most beautiful movie in a long time and Sally Hawkins' performance was phenomenal!)
3. Thomas Newman - "Victoria & Abdul"
4. Nitin Sawhney - "Breathe"
5. Dario Marianelli - "Darkest Hour"

This year, "Call Me by Your Name" undoubtedly had the best songs!
Although I love "Never Forget" by Michelle Pfeiffer too! <3

And here are a few honorable mentions:

Michael Giacchino - "Coco"
Alexandre Desplat - "Suburbicon"
Ramin Djawadi - "The Mountain Between Us"
Michael Giacchino - "The Book of Henry"
Alan Menken - "Beauty and the Beast"
Daniel Hart - "A Ghost Story"
Dario Marianelli - "Paddington 2"

I even liked Mark Mothersbaugh's "Thor: Ragnarok". At least partially.

That's fine. I thought that the movie was excellent and I loved that the music had a big part in many scenes, since most of the characters barely speak. And I also loved that Giacchino didn't use a "Star Trek style" for this one as with many of his recent big-budget films like Jurassic World, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes... War for the Planet of the Apes and Rogue One didn't, they felt different.

And I'm also in the minority as I say that I didn't like Dunkirk... nor as a film nor its score. But I can see its value. It's just that it didn't work that much with me.

As I predicted. He'll most likely win the Oscar as well. Though I don't even see Dunkirk being nominated. I think it's his weakest score from a Nolan film.

Yes Desplat will probably win the Oscar as well. I don't think it's Desplatd best work and there are many other desplat scores that deserve to win more than shape of water but it's definitively a good score. I would like to see Zimmer win because I thought Dunkirk worked so well in the movie and it's a really well made score but it'll never happen.

I think it's a real shame that this wonderful movie ("The Shape of Water") wasn't appreciated enough!
I still can't get over it. That's just not right. This award season was a total flop... :(
I really hope that this mistake will be fixed at the Oscars.

Well, I have seen "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" and liked it. However, it wasn't outstanding in any category.
It was just a good movie. Although I really like Frances McDormand, she was far from Sally Hawkins's performance.
Just like any other actress in this category actually.

Allison Janney and Gary Oldman were the only right decisions this year. At least for me.

After all, I'm very happy for del Toro and Desplat! My favorites are "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Coco avant Chanel"!
But he's always great. One of the most talented composers ever. :)

Interesting that John Williams' "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" appears to be snubbed from major awards...

Star Wars has only been nominated four times before with one win (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens), so a Star Wars film not getting nominated is nothing new. It's just that the competition was incredibly fierce this year. None of the prequel scores were nominated for major awards so the sequel trilogy is already winning there. It's just been a really close competition this year.

Dunkirk
Panthom Thread
The Shape of Water

I'm surprised to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi on there, considering the fandom and audience backlash saying how they're done with this franchise, etc. (critics loved it, but it was no where near as close as TFA's hype, especially if you put Rotten Tomatoes into the equation: TFA - 93 and TLJ - 90. Metacritic is a different ballgame: TFA has 81 and TLJ has 85. I personally loved "The Last Jedi", but to each their own.)

Looking back at the past nominations, I'm surprised the scores for the prequels didn't get nominations and those scores were really good, especially Revenge of the Sith.

I'm hoping for "The Shape Of Water" to win. Fantastic score by Desplat.

8 nominations for Dunkirk, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Score.
I'm genuinely happy that Nolan finally got his first Best Director nom, but I honestly think that each and every one of those nominations should have gotten to Blade Runner 2049 instead.
I mean, Best Original Score to Dunkirk? Which is sound design, climax, tension with some music arranged from Edward Elgar's works? Come on. If they wanted Zimmer for a nom, vote for Blade Runner.

DAKoftheOTA
01-23-2018, 03:58 PM
But was it even eligible considering it was 2 people and included Vangelis? I'm not surprised it didn't get nominated though, I didn't think it would. It's as much sound design as Dunkirk is. And I think the only reason Dunkirk got a nomination is the Nolan factor.

If Dunkirk is the score HZ wins his second Oscar for, I'll be disappointed. I don't love it as much as his other scores for Nolan films. It should've been 3 years ago for INTS.

Imperivm
01-23-2018, 04:23 PM
Blade Runner 2049 was eligible, I'm pretty sure about it. It's always sound design, but it has some "soul" to it.

I'd be extremely disappointed if Zimmer wins this one.

It should've been 3 years ago for INTS.

:this:

Tbh, I don't even get why Dunkirk is so "great" for some. Sure, Best Director and Editing are well deserved, but seriously this film was totally soul-less, dry, without empathy, without any intellectual idea behind it (thing that is present in every Nolan film).

And if emotion-less is what makes movies great, well, I'm definitely missing something. Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge is a far better movie.
