Known as �Speed Racer� in the USA, �Mach GoGoGo� started as a comic book and became a popular 52-episode animated series on Japanese TV in the late 60s (with music by Nobu Koshibe). The TV series was re-booted in 1997 as the 34-episode Mach GoGoGo - Restart with music by Michiru Oshima. The stories would also become various video games and the basis for the 2008 live-action �Speed Racer� film in the US.
The stories are not only about the excitement of the racetrack, but the manufacture and testing of the cars, and the various family dramas facing the drivers. Cars and gadgetry are important too---the series Director said he was greatly influenced by the early James Bond films. Being aimed at restless, young kids, Oshima�s music for the 1997 series has its share of raucous action cues, but a lot more too: a sporty march, some cool jazz, even a soft-shoe for clarinet & orchestra. Some tracks remind me of the theme music for a 1980s TV game show, or the jazzy interlude of a TV Talk-show, or the funky theme music for an early TV cop-show. Not sure if that is good or bad. But each track has more than one musical sequence, so if you don�t like how a track starts, keep listening as it will turn into something else. The solo piano of track 7, for example, will eventually give way to a pretty pastoral tune for orchestra. A true potpourri.
