Note: About 25-30% of the albums posted are no longer available.
There will be no re-ups! So, get the music while it's still "in place". ;)

This thread will be devoted to the music of British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams,
on account of his popularity among film music lovers. I am going to focus on single
releases rather than "boxed" editions, so inevitably there will be multiple overlaps.
To save time, I am not going to introduce the individual albums, you can google
information on these works and albums on your own. All albums are in FLAC
format, my own rips, and come with artwork & booklet whenever possible.

The Film Music of Ralph Vaughan Williams - Thread 213622
The Complete Symphonies (Bryden Thomson cycle, LSO) - http://forums.ffshrine.org/showthread.php?t=211365&highlight=

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) left a varied oeuvre that includes orchestral works, songs, operas, and various
choral compositions. While primarily drawing on the rich tradition of English folksong and hymnody, Vaughan Williams produced
well-loved works that fit into larger European traditions and gained worldwide popularity.

Vaughan Williams, who lost his father early in life, was cared for by his mother. Related, through his mother, to both Charles
Darwin and the Wedgwoods of pottery fame, he grew up without financial worries. He studied history and music at Trinity College,
Cambridge, and finished up at the Royal College of Music, where he worked with Parry, Wood, and Stanford. In 1897, the year
he married Adeline Fisher, Vaughan Williams traveled to Berlin to study with Max Bruch, also seeking Maurice Ravel as a teacher
several years later, despite the fact that the French composer was three years his junior. In 1903, he started collecting English
folksongs; certain characteristics of English folk music, particularly its modal tonalities, in many ways informed his approach to
composition. Vaughan Williams further developed his style while working as editor of the English Hymnal, which was completed
in 1906. His work on the English Hymnal went beyond editing, for he contributed several new hymn tunes, most notably the
Sine nomine, the tune for the hymn For All the Saints. The composer's interest in and knowledge of traditional English music
is reflected in his song cycle On Wenlock Edge (1909), based on selections from A.E. Housman's immensely popular volume
of poetry A Shropshire Lad. In his Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, composed in 1910, Vaughan Williams introduced
antiphonal effects within the context of modal tonality, juxtaposing consonant, but unrelated, triads. Composed in 1914,
his Symphony No. 2, "A London Symphony" brings to life, with great charm, the sounds of London from dawn to dusk.
That year, Vaughan Williams also wrote his pastoral The Lark Ascending, for violin and orchestra. When World War I broke
out, the 41-year-old composer enlisted as an orderly in the medical corps, becoming famous for organizing choral singing
and other entertainment in the trenches. He was commissioned from the ranks, ending his war service as an artillery officer.
The war interrupted the composer's work but did not, it seems, disrupt the inner continuity of his creative development.
The Symphony No. 3 ("Pastoral"), composed in 1922, conjures up a familiar world, effectively incorporating folksong
motives into sonorities created by sequential chords. While critics detected pessimistic moods and themes in the later
symphonies, ascribing a shift to a darker vision to the composer's alleged general pessimism about the world,
Vaughan Williams refused to attach any programmatic content to these works. However, the composer created
a convincing musical description of a desolate world in his Symphony No. 7 "Sinfonia Antarctica" (1952), which was
inspired by the request to write the music for the film Scott of the Antarctic. In addition to his symphonies,
Vaughan Williams composed highly acclaimed religious music, as well as works inspired by English spiritual literature,
culminating in his 1951 opera The Pilgrim's Progress, based on the spiritual classic by John Bunyan. An artist of
extraordinary creative energy, Vaughan Williams continued composing with undiminished powers until his death at 87.

Vaughan Williams was one of my early introductions to classical music and remains dominant in my collection- but damn- some of this music is totally NEW to me! Bravo for this collection.

(ps. The version represented here of The Oxford Elegy remains THE finest recording of the work I have ever heard).

Unless I'm much mistaken, I've now covered all the recorded works of Ralph Vaughan Williams, each at least once (and several many times over). There's also one complete symphony cycle (LSO, Bryden Thomson), that I posted here: http://forums.ffshrine.org/showthread.php?t=211365&highlight= - as well as his film music, here: http://forums.ffshrine.org/showthread.php?t=213622&highlight= .

Now, I could leave it at that, or post some more alternative versions of his concert works, i.e. IF you'd be interested!

This an amazing and startling thread. First it features so many of the masterpieces composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams and making it an excellent introduction to classical music and second, being a collector of his work for many decades, much represented here is new to my ancient ears. I must admit to surprise by so many recordings of his 4th Symphony- never my favorite and even the composer admitted he was not sure he liked it but it was 'what he intended it to be' (I paraphrase). All should take advantage of the generous offerings of so many recordings. RVW is responsible for making this world a more beautiful place.

What he said was this: "I don't know whether I like it, but it's what I meant." - Maybe he himself was shocked by the harshness of his own creation. RVW always denied any programmatic influences in his symphonies, but apart from the obviously programmatic "Sinfonia Antartica" I think the dread of his 4th was at least partially influenced by the tension and impending doom of the inter-war years, and the 6th by the devastation and hitherto-unknown horrors of WWII - despite the humorous passages in each work.

You've got the Boult, but I didn't notice the Hickox, which I've ripped to flac and the lyrics &c can be downloaded from Chandos. I've listened several times to both and consider each has a vital insight into RVW's crowning work.

"The Bacchae", "Electra", "Iphigenia in Tauris"

In 1911, Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote music for three plays by Euripides The Bacchae, Electra
and Iphigenia in Tauris then newly translated into English verse. Isadora Duncan had danced for the composer and
asked him to write music for her to dance to within The Bacchae, and he also worked with the translator, Gilbert Murray.
A planned production of Iphigenia in Tauris did not come off, but there was a public performance of the music alone in
May 1912. It was described at the time as being music of undeniable beauty and Gilbert Murray wrote that the music
was set in my judgement extraordinarily well. The mezzo soprano soloist, Heather Lowe in her recording debut, sometimes
sings and sometimes recites the words of the choruses, accompanied by female voices (and additional soloists) from
Joyful Company of Singers and by Britten Sinfonia conducted by Alan Tongue.

It's been brought to my attention that a certain member of this forum (who uses at least two, possibly more aliases) has been sharing my music - again - on a private tracker and claimed it to be his own.

So, no more shares in this thread and no more FLAC shares in the future either.

What's a private tracker? And isn't this just the typical result of posting? My posts of the two rare Rosza suites was gobbled up, augmented, and reposted, if I remember correctly.
It would be nice to get credit (seeing I paid big bucks years ago to have these discs remastered from LP) but in the long run they are NOT MY PROPERTY. The most you can hope is to receive a thank
you... I always hope to see a response to the music and that hardly ever, ever happens. It frustrates me, a little, that I am filling the needs of forum members who NEVER SHARE A THING. They
are listed as long time members with hardly a handful of posts.

Not that my attitude is standard, I just decided early on to learn how to post music as a courtesy to those who have shared.

You provided a wonderful array of Vaughan William masterpieces. I have not tired of listening to the solo piano collection you posted. I always wondered about RVW and the piano, adoring his double piano concerto
played by Vronsky & Babin, conducted by Adrian Boult. So I once more thank you for the piano collection.

One shares for the pleasure of sharing. Again I wish there was more output from this, though I appreciate being thanked. We can't expect the work to be forever entitled to ourselves. So thank you for
your great effort and opening so many ears. That is the most I can offer to balance your distress of people with bad manners and do not share the source of the material they have collected.

A private tracker is a tracker that you must be invited to.

I wouldn't mind so much if at least the people sharing the music further had the decency to mark their "forwarded posts" as "Not my rip." - which is customary on FFS, too.

"Folk Song Arrangements" (& others)

I Love my Love is a collection of remastered 78 rpm recordings of folk songs, drawn from recordings made
between 1919 and 1947. It focuses on folk songs of classical beauty, presented in generally straightforward
arrangements, collected in the early years of the 20th century. There is a depth of humanity in these songs
that connects us to a not-so-distant past. The stories and sentiments they describe, of love, war, courtship,
separation and the vagaries of the seasons, can make us smile, empathise and, sometimes, still move us to tears.

In parallel with the collection and revival of folk song at the beginning of the 20th century, there was a revival
in Tudor music, as a result of which E H Fellowes completed 36 volumes of The English Madrigal School in 1913,
and finally got it published in 1924. Steuart Wilson and Cuthbert Kelly founded The English Singers to sing this
repertoire, and they adopted the quasi-Elizabethan practice of sitting round a table to sing. Clearly, they were
happy to extend their repertoire to folk song, and the first ten tracks on our new recording find them singing
folk song settings by Vaughan Williams. The next three tracks feature Steuart Wilson himself, with Gerald Moore.
Further settings by Vaughan Williams appear in various guises, with some beautiful arrangements by other composers.
All true RVW lovers will want to hear Mary Lewis in Im to be married on a Tuesday morning.
