Ok I am currently playing FF9 and I have some questions. I am on disk 3. I just started it a little while ago. I just got that ship thingy and I am on like level 28 for Zidane. But you know how Steiner and Freya leave you for a long time, well Steiner is only level 19 and Freya is level 16. Any advice on how to catch them up. Oh and tell me if I am on a low level.

That's what always happens with me. Since both Steiner and Freya are at lower levels, they'll level up to the same level as Zidane pretty quick, since it takes more exp to level at high levels than low ones.

As for the level you're at, I think you're at the same level as I usually am. Maybe try leveling up abit more, though, so you're prepared for whatever happens if it's your first time through.

Each character has a support ability called 'Level Up', which raises the amount of EXP gained after battle, so it would be prudent to equip them with that ability (or have them learn it ASAP if they haven't already done so), but not Zidane, essentially meaning in such a situation he would gain less EXP than the others, until they are more even matched in level and experience.

Also, at the end of the game, you are not required to have to have Zidane in your party, so you can spend your time levelling everyone up in the final dungeon anyway if the former method is too unsuitable, and you don't mind waiting to do so.

Also, I'm not too sure about what level you should be at that point in the game, but really, as long as you're around level 45 by the final dungeon, then you shouldn't hae too many problems.

Ok thanks guys. My Steiner caught up but I decided not to use Freya. I didn't really like the way she fought anyways. I am just going to stick with Zidane, Dagger, Vivi, and Steiner. Don't ask why, I don't really like the other characters. I felt like there part is useless. Oh and I just got the airship and I have Zidane on level 41. I hope I am doing ok.

Grand Dragons can be found on the grassy ledge above Gizamaluke's Grotto on the Mist Continent (you can actually access the ledge by foot from the Grotto in dsic 1 when you're heading to Burmecia), or you can land the airship on the ledge. Grand Dragons are tough, but if you have protection against lightning, then they're a breeze (as they use powerful Thundaga spells).

You can also encounter them on the grass outside the entrance to Daguerreo (the hidden town south of the Forgotten Continent), but you can only access that town and area by airship or flying chocobo. Plus, the encounter rate for them is much less than above Gizamaluke's Grotto (most of the time you'll just encounter Gimme Cats instead).

Another good location to level up is on disc 4, is on Vile Island, the small isalnd between the Forgotten and Outer Continents. You can only land the airship here on disc 4, as the Hilda Garde 3 airship on disc 3 can only land on grassy areas, which this island lacks. The only monsters you encounter here are small lamb like creatures called Yans. But don't let their cute looks fool you. THEY... WILL... HURT....YOU!!!! No bull.

They will proceed to nuke your party with Meteor, often two or three times in a row. Plus, their tendency to use Virus, plus their Sneeze attack which knocks a character completely out of battle, means they can be somewhat unreliable for levelling at times. However, when everything works out, they give insane EXP and AP, so it is another option for those bored levelling in the final dungeon or on Grand Dragons.

my advice stop going and train them, you have some hard fights up ahead. I'm at the near end of disc 3 three and Zidane is level 43, and i'm still training, you go after Kuja, so i'm stop and train for a while. But train anywhere that you can buy items and has good enemies.

Go to a island west of the forgotten continent. It as only a qu marsh there. You can go there right after you get the ship... You'll encounter grand dragons often... I was at level 27 with zidane and a half hour after I was at level 39...

If you want certain people to level up faster you can kill off other party members, if you only have two alive (or virused) at the end of a battle the others will get twice as much EXP.

a good tip is to learn lv 5 death by getting Quina to eat a zombie whale (on the beach near esto gaza) then grand dragons are easy as pie. Of course you will need quina for all this.

for the sake of the thread: yes..just find good camping area like the grand dragons or any other mid lvl area and go at it for a while..

about Vile island..another thing..not involving lvling up per say..is the subject of those characters that appear in forests and the transition from field to battle includes a peaceful melody versus the regular random encounter one..anyone know the order in which to encounter these characters..like the ghoul/ghost forget it's name..around treno..give it an ore and it gives back considerable ap..a ladybug by Conde Petie..or by the conde petie mountain pass entrance by Ifa tree..because when i went to Vile island my first encounter was with one of those ap boosting characters but asked if met the 'others' first and then escaped..oh and mandragora's up by treno are a good comparison to those bastardly sheep....which might be a good place to lvl too..from 30-40..

That's because the 'friendly monsters' are actually part of a special quest.

MAYBE SPOILERS AHEAD

Give the monsters their items that each one asks for (the friendly Yan is actually the last one you have to speak to), and completing the quest will actually make the optional boss battle against Ozma (in Chocobo Air Garden) a hell of a lot easier (it makes it so you can attack Ozma with physical attacks, which otherwise can't reach it).

But, as you don't have to fight Ozma makes the quest pointless apart from the AP gain.
