Note: ever since the "complete score" leaked (which it is anything but complete), I'd been wanting to brave the minefield to put together my own complete score with the 25th Anniversary Burton/Elfman box being the main source but it was a rather daunting task to wade through them, especially more so that the complete score doesn't offer film versions of many cues ("Following Philipse" and "Love Lost" are two notable mentions). I also used the Bluray to rip the film version of the Introduction so at long last we finally now have it.

For this set there's these new cues: "Ichabod in Court" (film version doesn't exist on the complete score), "The Swallow/The Colly Flower" (source music from the complete score), "Argeers" (also source music), "Ichabod Investigates", "Autopsy" (the album version was truncated whereas this features the complete track from the complete score sequed into the point where the album version begins) and "Following Philipse" (film version doesn't exist on the complete score, upon reflection the film version may be tracked music from another scene but can't say for sure). "The Tree of Death" is closer to the film version now than the album version, it's actually a combo of the album and complete score with the film as my guidance.

As an added bonus, I've included several alternates from the complete score and the album versions of select cues. At times, the difference is minimal while others it's like hearing an entirely different piece of music. I never realized Elfman recorded so many versions of pretty much all of his cues for this score and there's still more out there. I decided to include the alternates that I did because they truly are a wonder to hear. To my surprise, the album contains the music as heard in the film (95% of the time, that's where the "complete" score comes in handy sometimes to complete a film version of a cue) whereas the "complete" score is largely alternate versions so I kept my usage of the "complete" score to an absolute minimum.

This is my favorite Elfman score and I worked super hard this morning to make sure this was done in time for Halloween, including a very lengthy quality-control session to make sure I won't have to come back to fix this so this SHOULD be the final edit I make. I did master in FLAC (lossless for the album source tracks and fake lossy for the MP3 complete score-sourced tracks) but for this initial release I'm uploading in VBR M4A since I'm short on time to upload the FLAC version but I will come back later to add a link to it here.

Without further adieu, HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Stay scared and ENJOY!

I was pretty tired when I edited this last night so when I upload my FLAC version, it'll have some additional tweaks and fixes that I missed when I uploaded the M4A version. Nothing MAJOR, just personal nitpicky stuff. You won't die without it, but I can't guarantee you won't lose your heads until then. ;)

It seems you have done a hard work.
I'll wait for the flac version. Reputation added.

I wonder if this work could be done for another great score by Elfman:
Scrooged (1988) Elfman & VA - complete? sessions? @FLAC lossless & lossy

I think this stuff deserves a serious study, ready to serve at Xmas.

FLAC link as promised: http://www.mediafire.com/file/stw3jm0djrl97l8/SHDEDEflac1.rar

Some new notes: due to the 192 MP3 bitrate of the "film version" of the Main Titles on the Burton/Elfman boxset, I took the liberty of reconstructing it from the sessions, available at 320 MP3. Fortunately, all the pieces I needed were in there. A critical note about the "film version" on this and the boxset editions: they are not true film versions, which is where it gets even more complicated. The version in the film is actually a unique mix that uses a combo of the sessions and official album with a few instances of unreleased music that is unfortunately unrippable from the Bluray due to SFX. I made an attempt to match the film version even without the missing pieces but I don't think it was good enough to include with this set. For those who may be curious, the version on my edition and the boxset uses both takes from the sessions as well as the extra insert for the epic middle section. I had to carefully stitch together bits and pieces of both takes as well as mix in the insert to match what was on the box set and it sounds far better to me now.

The same goes for all of the bonus cues on the box set version, with the exception of Autopsy/Phony Chase which is the only place to find that particular take. It's not the film version but that's okay since the film version features tracked music from "Church Battle". "Mysterious Figure" is a hybrid of the sessions and the boxset track due to the boxset being the only version to feature the film version of the ending; I included the alternate ending version as bonus material. "The Tree of Death" was also constructed almost exclusively from the sessions with the exception of 9:51-end which comes from the album (once again the only place for the necessary take). One note about "The Tree of Death", besides featuring an alternate ending the album version cuts out 0:56-1:10 which is included in my edit which DOES play in the film. Most listeners won't notice it but it baffled me why my edit is 35 seconds longer and that's one of the areas of extension. The other extension is an alternate build-up to the heads popping up in the tree which also plays in the film.

I also included a few more alternates for this new edition that I had missed before and brightened up the sound a little bit (with VERY LIGHT EQ) so THIS should be my final upload until I can talk SonicAdventure into helping me with the sound.

Hello everyone. I'm so thrilled to have made this dream many of you, including myself, have been waiting for come true. I'm not sure how many of you were old enough to have been in the theatre at the time but I was 11 when it came out and I remember going to see it with the family. We were the household that could pretty much watch whatever we want and even by 11 I had seen some pretty disturbing things and given that Tim Burton films are dark but have that extra layer of humor that doesn't bog you down too much with the atmosphere, I found that this film, like the score, completely immerses you in the full atmosphere and it's the darkest that Burton has shot to my knowledge. No matter what part of the film it is, whether it's action-packed, intimate or otherwise, in any scene you're constantly being treated to some sort of serious atmosphere. There are some comedic moments to punctuate the film itself but the score does not offer much in the way of levity in regards to the atmosphere. It starts right up and doesn't let go much for the score's 79 minute presentation. The way the themes are weaved into the score is breathtaking, especially when it's at full force. SonicAdventure refers to it as a wall of sound and he's not wrong but I like that kind of atonal stuff so for instance, cues like The Story... (track 4) are right up my alley. It starts as a low, nearly silent, build up to the big moment we've all been waiting the whole cue for and it comes in with a vengeance. That cue alone (time points 2:09-2:20 for instance) is how I based the volume levels of each cue for the set. I like to listen to scores at a consistent volume and heavy cues like that re-shape how I do my processes because I don't want that cue to be loud while the other cues don't pack the same power at a lower volume. It's a real technical nightmare but I think I've worked out most of the personal kinks I have with it as a whole. SonicAdventure and I have discussed "remastering" it but please don't get your hopes up until you hear more about it. We're both busy folk so it could be a hot minute before I come back around to this so I wanted to get my rant out and move forward to discuss the real meat and bones of this whole venture: my cue breakdown including what cues, takes and all that that I used, why I had to resort to lossy for some cues and other interesting little editorial tidbits that I can think of as I go along. I hope it's not too dull or confusing of a read for you. It's going to be rather long so I'm going to put it in the spoiler below so as not to fill up the page.

Track Listing and Cue Breakdown

1. Introduction (1m1, film version, Bluray and lossless album source) - this cue was rather easy to compile. Utilizing the DTS-HD track from the Bluray I was able to isolate the section I needed and seamlessly blended it in with the album version (which oddly offers film takes whereas the sessions offer very few film takes). It was 100% clean so no special treatment of that section was needed, just a little leveling to seamlessly integrate with the album material.

2. Ichabod in Court (1m2 v 1&2, 320 MP3 sessions source) - for this, I mixed both takes together (one under the other in my editor) from the sessions as they both had their own things that complemented the other and didn't create that odd ringy effect you can get when you do that. Unfortunately neither take of the sessions featured the film version of the ending and worse is that the cue isn't isolatable from the Bluray. It's okay because this cue in the film blends into the main titles which excludes that opening string tremolo from the main titles which by doing what I did, it still allowed me to keep the main titles on its own track. Which leads me to...

3. Main Titles (1m3 v1&2, 1m3Alt pu and 1m4 v2, 320 MP3 sessions source) - this is where I hit my first real snag. The "film version" of the main titles on the Burton/Elfman boxset was only available in 192 MP3 and what's worse is that it's not even the real film version! The film version is made undoable for me because there's a section in the opening moments that no version of the soundtrack has and it's not isolatable because of the SFX, that then blends into a section from the album then moves into 1m4 v2. The compromise I made was completely and painstakingly reconstructing the boxset "film version" from the sessions which miraculously was possible. 0:00-0:51 is from 1m3 v2, 0:51-1:45 from 1m3 v1, 1m3Alt pu inserted at 1:45 then fades into 1m3 v2 at 2:03, 1m4 v2 starts at 2:41 and runs to the end.

4. The Story... (1m6, lossless album source) - Burton/Elfman boxset source, offered the necessary film takes, nothing special to report...except that I LOVE this cue.

5. Masbath's Terrible Death (2m1, lossless album source) - Burton/Elfman boxset source, offered the necessary film takes, nothing special to report...except that this cue is AWESOME.

6. The Devil's Fire (2m3, 320 MP3 sessions) - only one take available, comparing it the film as best as I can reveals it's a (rare for the set) film take.

7. Young Masbath (2m4, 320 MP3 sessions) - only one take available, boxset version only offered 192 MP3 and this take matches that version albeit with a clean ending. The boxset album version crossfaded into a later part of Autopsy/Phony Chase so for the sake of quality and completion I stuck completely to the sessions for this cue and gave it a clean ending.

8. Autopsy/Phony Chase (2m5&6 v2, 320 MP3 & lossy album track) - 0:00-1:41 is from the sessions while the rest is from the lossy boxset album track which I chose because no matter which version you prefer the film still uses an insert from Church Battle for the action of the scene and to avoid repetition, I went with the album version because I favored that one the most.

9. Sweet Dreams (2m7, lossless album source) - only source of the film take.

10. A Gift/Following Philipse (3m1&2, lossless album source and 320 MP3 sessions) - 0:00-2:16 is from the album, the rest from the sessions. 3m2 is NOT the film version and unfortunately the film version isn't achievable without intrusive SFX. It blends well so I deal with it.

11. Philipse's Death (3m3 v3, 320 MP3 sessions) - the boxset version again was 192 MP3, the sessions miraculously offered the film take.

12. More Dreams (3m4, lossless album source) - the sessions and the album both had the film version so went with the album for quality purposes.

13. Into the Woods/The Witch (3m5, lossless album source) - boxset offered necessary film takes

14. Mysterious Figure (3m6, 320 MP3 sessions and lossy album track source) - sessions had necessary film take in higher quality from 0:00-0:47 while the lossy album track offers the rest of the film version.

15. The Tree of Death (4m1 Pts. 1, 2 & 3 (v2), 320 MP3 sessions and lossless album source) - the bulk of this is from the album but the album cuts around 35 seconds of material which I supplemented from the sessions. Session-based sections run from 0:56-1:55 (4m1 Pt. 1, missing extension from album which features in film) and 9:34-9:49 (4m1 Pt. 3 v2, film version), rest is lossless album sourced. Also fixed a couple of "click" anomalies between 7:36-7:39 which astoundingly appear on both albums AND the sessions, can't believe we all missed that for so long but it stook out like a sore thumb on repeat listenings for me so I had to fix it. Another EXCELLENT and POWERFUL action cue that shows Elfman's incredible range, and is now expanded to over 10 minutes!

16. Bad Dream/Tender Moment (5m1, lossless album source) - film take, nothing special to report, other than it's one of my favorite scenes from the film

17. Evil Eye (5m2&3, lossless album source) - film take

18. The Church Battle/Love Lost (5m4-6, lossless album source) - film takes, previously 2 cues but appended them together

19. The Windmill/The Chase (6m1-3, lossless album source) - film takes, also previously 2 cues but appended them together as well, this cue is interesting in that there's music from 3:58-6:18 that you won't find on the sessions.

20. The Final Confrontation/A New Day! (6m4&5, lossless album source) - film takes, yet again 2 cues that I appended together

21. End Credits (6m6, lossless album source) - album offers cleaner quality, sessions offer extended version but it repeats material and is saved for the bonus section of this playlist.

I'll eventually get around to detailing the bonus material but this will have to do for now. Have a nice day!
