~OVERVIEW

Ahh my beloved Diablo II. At the time of writing, the game is nearly 20 years old...and it is very much still alive and kicking! I never imagined I would have something to upload to the FFS forum, but I'm glad to have this chance to contribute something, and that something being nothing less than the Diablo 2/LoD soundtrack with my own twist. This project was a true labor of love, taking me countless hours to research and piece together the necessary info. and files to make this the comprehensive beast that it is. Yes this was a labor of love, but it was borne out of confusion. Confusion over the disparities between what's heard in the game, what's heard in the official soundtracks, and the very naming of the tracks. Most fans of the music are probably aware of what I'm talking about, but if not, here is a quick rundown. The official D2 soundtrack released by Blizzard was a sorry mess, featuring shortened versions of tracks and leaving out whole songs altogether. This is entirely unsatisfactory for such a popular and beloved game. This is where I step in and finally put an end to this gaping, open wound- with this, the most comprehensive, complete, and informative expanded version of the Diablo II soundtrack ever compiled!

~Why is it ULTIMATE?

I'm well aware that this soundtrack has seen a number of uploads here at FFS and beyond, with most of them being rips of the various official albums or from the game's files, with Doublehex's release being the foremost. However, every release I've ever looked at was always missing something. ULTIMATE corrects this. It features all of the core tracks in full length, all alternate version tracks, all of Matt Uelmen's liner notes (embedded), detailed ID3 tag info., all cinematic tracks, album cover, all the cue tracks, plus over 20 bonus tracks! The bonus tracks include a variety of things, including the famous outtakes and a few others that are sure to surprise. AND, the cherry on top is that I've included a slew of some of the most memorable sound effects from the game. I'm sure many of you'll get a kick from these. Set 'em as your cell's ringtone!

~ALBUM BREAKDOWN

The core album is arranged in chronological order from when they are heard in the game, starting with the opening cinematic and ending with the LoD end-game cinematic. This is followed by the bonus tracks, 21 in all. To round it off, I tacked on the sound effect files at the end. The cover is amateur work for sure, but it gets the job done. Anyways, it's the music that counts! ;) This album is ideally played through programs like Winamp which allow for viewing of metadata, or more specifically, id3 tags. I mentioned that this project took me many hours of research to put together - the comment section in the tag info. of each file is where it mostly went, which is to say I've supplied a lot of reading material while you listen! There you'll find my own personal notes that provide relevant information for each track, including the liner notes written by Matt Uelmen himself which tell the story of each track. It can be convoluted and redundant at times, but I sought to explain everything I came to understand about this soundtrack. I certainly hope my efforts shine through.

~TECHNICALITIES

The saying "beggars can't be choosers" applies quite well to this release, as I had to work with what was available, which wasn't much. By that I mean the album is limited to lossy/MP3 format. [B]Sorry, no lossless/FLAC release for this album! The core tracks are sourced from the game's install files. These files were in 22050 Hz compressed WAV format and were converted to MP3. 160 Kbps MP3 was the maximum allowed bitrate for a 22050 Hz WAV file. The cinematic tracks were also sourced from the game's install files, converted from BIK video format to 192 MP3. Luckily, these were able to go to 44100 Hz sample rate. As for the bonus tracks, the first 9 selections and the two concept tracks were sourced from the official soundtracks, so 320 MP3 conversions from uncompressed WAV was possible. The outtakes were only available online as is, so 192 MP3 was the best I could find. All the others were also only available online, so a 192 MP3 clean sweep was in order. Whew! I'm glad that's over. ...

~FINAL WORD

I put this album together over the lingering feeling that this game STILL hadn't received a cohesive and robust soundtrack release. At long last that is no longer true. Please download, listen, and share! This soundtrack is timeless!

https://k2s.cc/file/e36f9e1685c53

(The album is compressed into a RAR file which requires WinRAR or a similar program to unpack it. It's 303 MB that unpacks to 310 MB total. File is up on Keep2Share, just click on the slow speed download and wait for the link to show up. THERE IS NO PASSWORD.)*

* I'll do my best to keep the link up as long as possible, but for those of you reading this in the future when the link is probably long dead, try using Soulseek. I'm on it a lot so just type up the name of the album and hopefully it'll come up!

Very impressive work. I already downloaded the "Complete Soundtrack" which consists of 52 tracks and is ~2h45m and is located here: Thread 91651

Is there any reason I should download your version over this one here beyond the SFX? Also a MEGA link would be much appreciated over the slow server it is currently uploaded to.

Edit: Also here is a quick mock up of your cover I did in Photoshop with better resolution and way better text =P

Well thanks dude. So what you have linked there is Doublehex's release which bears no difference to my release as far as the core tracks go, but mine includes the embedded liner notes from the composer plus any additional information. Aside from that, this release features some alternate version tracks and some other extras in addition to the SFX, like I wrote in the description. So basically it's a more complete version. So you'd prefer a MEGA upload? Here you go:

You're too cool for re-making the cover! (With the Diablo font no less!) Thing is, I made the cover small and low resolution on purpose so that it could be embedded into the MP3 files without blowing up the file sizes, plus the forum let me upload an image to a maximum of 150 KB or something. But I will change the front cover on the post itself if I can. Cheers!

So about what it says on that left side of the disc... Your going to ignore that part right, for science? Also where did you acquire that? It is incredible!

Unfortunately, this CD does not differ from the disk in the D2:LoD

Ahh okay that's good to know. Congrats on getting that in your collection!

Interesting. Looks like a prototype or bootleg version. Maybe something Blizzard produced in small numbers for employees only?
