Well, what are your thoughts on the new upcoming Tomb Raider: Legend. I will officially admit, I am only hoping it will be good. I am honestly not sure this time around. After the worst in the series, Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness was released, I did not have a great deal of hope. However, this press release reveals there may in fact be some hope.

During their soul-searching mission, they unearthed past consumer surveys, conducted new research, re-read every game review, listened to lots of passionate pleas and opinions from gamers and re-played through every Tomb Raider product. Info via gamespot.

I don't know how to explain, everything began to gradually slip down after the second one, especially with the third installation, which I used to like until I realized I needed faqs to pass more than half of the levels. Not to mention the clumsy programming. I still remember a couple of times Lara jiggles in a stuck space.

I have yet to hear any development go through all that in any of the numerous previews or stories. The first step is they admitted their last game was shit. Its very possible they got it righ this time, especially because it was turned over to a different team. It does not gurantee the game's success, but if that statement holds true, it would be a far more ambitious than most games.

Every Tomb Raider game (for sony systems) was excellent except three and the angel of disappointment. part of the fun of a tomb raider game is trying to figure out what the fuck to do for three months (yeah, it took me that long in the last revelation--tr 4--to figure something out. i kept passing by a fucking ladder on a wall).

the angel of dissappointment was shit, so i'm glad they admitted that. what was with them introducing a new character that was a fucking male anyway? they didn't even make him look as good character-wise as lara. and the whole rpg element? ho-ly-shit.

the only way they could make a new tomb raider game that isnt exactly like the psx ones is to incorporate all of the great elements they had in those games but upgraded. such as new abilities, but not earned in a fucking rpg way for pete's sake. her gizmos should be more high-tech, she is a bazillionaire for crying out loud. if they bring back the fucking guy again i dont know if i will play the next game even though i love tr.

the story needs to be good since they decided to have a story after tr 3 (the worst in the series, imo. even moreso than taod).

i havent heard anything about this new game though other than the new model.

The new model looks HOT. That's all I can say.

I liked the upgrades, but it was just uninvolving, much like the rest of the game. If you go to tombraider.com and register (no strings) you can see some screenshots. At least it will have nice graphics, and while hot, her body figure isn't so fake as it used to be. Her boobs aren't triple Ds and only a ten inch waist.

I went to the site and looked at it. I despise what they have done to lara. she is wearing ridiculous clothes that she would never wear and her face just isn't a lara croft face. it just doesn't look right. with the technological aspect, i just hope they dont go too far and make it play like a tom clancy game or something. i play tomb raider games because i like tomb raider games; i dont play tom clancy games because i don't like them.

it looks like a tomb raider knock-off or something.

http://larasmansion.com/pics/tr7/larafront.jpgokay... how much have they paid Keira Knightley?! HOW MUCH, DAMMIT!!!
I quite liked TR2, although I did get kinda fed up with TR3, it was okay to play, just stupidly hard! I loved the last level in TR2, running around in the mansion sniping the flunkies from various points is fun!

The last installment was sort of average, not overly bad - but okay.
I wish the next one would remain true to the series -and be great again!

I have disliked Tomb Raider since it was released. I've played through 1-4 however just because on of my friends was playing through it and talked about it constantly.

To me, Tomb Raider is intirely too unresponsive and it feels like you are on a grid. If you go forward you'll be on this square, and if you jump back you'll move back two squares. It's entirely too precise, and doesn't allow for any margin of error or give you any options on how you want to do things.

The only way I will play the next Tomb Raider game is if they diverse completely off the path the series has made. I think they should make it more like Prince of Persia personally. That is the way an adventure game should be and actually fits Laura's character a lot more than jumping always in straight lines and always the same distance.

How so? The only thing that has changed from 1 - 4 (the ones I've played) are that they upped the graphics and added a one or two moves. Tomb Raider has hardly changed at all in my opinion.

I heard they changed some in Angel of Darkness, but I never was interested in the game so didn't check it out, and am pretty happy with that decision.

The Joker

I always like the fact of how precise it was, maybe it is artificial. I did think half of the jumps in Tomb Raider Raider III required so much precision you had to save every other jump. :(

The Angel of Darkness had to be hands down, the worst installment ever made. Never before had I played a game that froze on me. This game not only did once, I think it at least froze on me five times within the first level.

And Alice, what ridiculous clothes? Thats more or less what she has always worn. A tank top and short shorts. How the hell is it any different? They also got rid of her waist that was too small to be human and breasts that were so big I'm surprised she didn't knock people over.

i still think that tr 3 was the worst installment, since how that was the only one that i could not finish. angel of disappointment at least captivated my attention long enough for that.

her clothes are extremely un-lara croft. lara croft would NEVER wear that shirt. NEVER. it has sleeves that are too long and are baggy. that doesn't even look good in comparison to the rest of the shirt. and a shirt underneat her v-neck? NEVER. lara doesn't wear teenager clothes. she is a woman. the same can be said of her face--too teen. she doesnt have the lara croft darkness either that the story has led her to. where's the attitude? the change in her appearance in the angel of disappointment was good--it still fit the lara that i love. this new look is SHIT. S-H-I-T.

as for her waist and breasts: they arent drastically different. im not even sure the waist is different at all. they just made her look more real in general, so changed her body accordingly.

Now that you're done arguing over the aesthetics of the game, let's get back to the point of how awful it's going to be - the Tomb Raider Team have had no good ideas since Tomb Raider 2, but they know that the series is licence to print money to adolescents. Lara Croft perpetuates the ideology of women as objects to oogle, and the british stiff upper lip. Bo-ring.

Alice Wonderbra
04-17-2005, 07:08 PM
i disagree! tomb raider 4 (last revelation) was a really great game. this is when they added a good storyline and used that story to make lara croft a more well-rounded character. this installment started a storyline that went through the next game, chronicles, and the next after that, the angel of darkness. it incorporated new skills as well as new aspects of gameplay. the training session was pure genius in that game--rather than go to her mansion to train on your own, you were instead a teen version of herself and it fit in with the storyline.

chronicles didnt innovate or anything really, though the gameplay was again a bit different, but it also gave you more insight into who was lara croft by going through her life.

angel of darkness, though going down the wrong path, also added new elements to her character, as she finally descended into darkness as was started by the last revelation.

we all know that i am a feminist (which everyone should be imho--equality between the sexes isn't anything that should be frowned upon) i don't consider tomb raider as anything like that. sure, lara croft is supposed to be a hot woman or whatever, but it has never offended me. if i made a female character, i would want her to be attractive too.

mrmonkeyman
04-17-2005, 07:54 PM
Now let's not get me started on Feminism nowadays; not saying you're one of them, but a great deal of young girls who say they're feminists actually mean they want equality until it starts playing against them. So, essentially, they want the female version of the patriarchy. But that's reasonably irrelevant to this discussion.

Fuck it, I'm not in the mood to type anything relevant beyond that Tomb Raider is a series that through its success has spawned many, many bad games, and has furthered the cause for trial and error gaming; the very armpit of the gameplay experience. Nothing to do with skill - all about dying and trying again.

Alice Wonderbra
04-17-2005, 07:59 PM
I disagree (again)! tomb raider is a game in its own niche. once you get the hang of it, there is no more trial and error (except i make the game super hard on myself by never using medpacks and ammo, so if i lose a lot of life i reload it). i am very good at tomb raider games, whereas i know a lot of people cant get the hang of the control system (it is different in that you control it from her pov rather than yours).

Eh? You're saying that Tomb Raider is the only third person perspective game?

You do realise that that's completely wrong, right?

The control system is nothing that hasn't been seen/mimicked/done elsewhere far better. It's the same simple 3D platformer system combined with slight shooting elements that were pretty mediocre.

Fuck the whole "boohoo, I don't like her dress" and "objectifying women" bullshit arguements and lets talk about how the game will actually play.

Honestly, 3 was bad, but at least it didn't freeze on you.

MMM, yes they went downhill after 2 (most especially 3 and Angel of Darkness) but it you've read their statement, they look dead serious this time about fixing it. Especially when you go back and read the reviews of every Tomb Raider game ever made. It doesn't mean will make it, but the company is basically admitting they made a shit game and they are actually going to try this time.

And isn't skill rather correlated to trial and error? If say I'm play Soul Calibur and I keep losing, I have to keep trying until I learn a different pattern of attack or a more effective strategy.

Alice Wonderbra
04-20-2005, 12:59 AM

Have you noticed that her skin is darker in the second ( earlier image) too?

any way, I played TR1 and 2, but kinda lost interest in the series after the second game.

I thought some of the puzzle aspects of the first game were rather good ( getting the mummy to fall in the hole to open the door) and I enjoyed the more action based TR2, but after playing the demo of TR3 I decided that 1 and 2 were more than adequate for me, and so I never bothered.

I have to admit though, TR:L has piqued my interest

As a huge Tomb Raider fan I have to say of course !! and as I huge Tomb Raider fan I have to say that AOD wasn't good lol, but if it wasn't for AOD they probably never would have made Legend and would have continued with the Angel of Darkness storyline, so in a way it's good that AOD wasn't finished, but I'm very positive about the new game, I think it's going to be great !!
