Herschel Burke Gilbert was one of the most prolific composers for television in the 1950s, although occasionally he composed scores for motion pictures. Gilbert provided the music for the 1956 American-Mexican co-production COMANCHE!, a western starring Dana Andrews, Kent Smith and Linda Cristal (her American film debut). A soundtrack LP of Gilbert’s score was released by Coral Records and included a main title song “A Man Is As Good As His Word” with lyrics by Alfred Perry, sung by The Lancers over the film’s credits. The song is heard instrumentally several times within the score. This download of Gilbert’s score was DSD archived from a � inch reel tape which features only the instrumental score. Although the LP was reissued very briefly by MCA Japan, I did not have access to that CD or the original LP for this remaster, so the vocal is missing. (I have heard it in the film, no great loss). The remaining symphonic score, without the vocal intrusions, is presented here in fairly decent sound, played on the soundtrack by the Mexico City Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer. COMANCHE! Is reminiscent of Gilbert’s western scores for the TV series “Zane Grey Theatre” and “The Rifleman”, which is to say that it among his best works. The tracks, originally recorded monaurally, have been remastered using the extraction process, which allows monaural recordings to play properly over the stereo two speaker and headphone systems in use today. I can only offer it in MP3 (320 kbps) at this time but the sound is surprisingly good in this format, especially if it is converted to wave for a CD by ITunes or another music software program.
