Note: this is a score that I'd hoped would come around eventually and now that it has come, here is my deluxe edition of it. To start off, due to the inconsistent flow of the chronological score I have largely maintained the chronological presentation while re-arranging cues that need it for a better flow. It's nothing too dramatic, just swapping a cue or two here and there but the effect is a dramatically improved listening experience. Hopefully I made the right sequencing choices and that this satisfies everyone.
Unfortunately word on the street is that the original source that was posted in FLAC by gcyork is not genuine lossless so alas my edition is not true lossless either which is why I dubbed it flossless (fake lossless). I transcoded to lossless M4A as it is easier to import into iTunes. No other reason beyond that.
Quality-wise everything sounds pretty good EXCEPT for the "Guitar Suite" and "Just Married" cues. They actually sound like generations old recordings so not sure what happened there. Not much I can do so I left it mostly as is while cleaning up the peaks a little bit. I deleted the bonus insert for "Nrburgring 1976" and "Niki Drives in Italy (no vox)" as they seemed superfluous.
As for the score itself, it reminds me of Hans' experimental work for Black Hawk Down but a lot more thematic. There's also some Inception-esque vibes and effects (Mombasa Chase anyone?) in here plus a little bit of Days of Thunder. and even Sherlock Holmes. At 82 minutes, half the album flew by before I had realized it so while it's not action-packed from beginning to end, it is nicely padded as to where it doesn't feel as long as most of Zimmer's other sessions tend to. I could definitely see this on my replay list in the future.
One cue I really had a difficult time with was the cue "Hunt Goes to Hospital". I didn't want to delete it nor did I want to leave it by itself so against my initial reservations, I mixed it into the end of "Nrburgring Opening". It kind of works for me, even if it is a little jarring. It sounds like how I imagine it would be mixed in the movie but having not seen the film, I had to guess.
Without further adieu, enjoy!
