SPANISH AFFAIR is a 1957 Paramount film, starring Richard Kiley and Carmen Sevila. Filmed in Madrid, Spain, the Spanish language version was directed by Luis Marquina and the English language version was directed by Don Siegel, who had directed the sci-fi classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” a year earlier. The colourful musical score was written by Daniele Amfitheatrof, a Russian born composer who was nominated for an Academy Award in 1946 for Disney’s Song of the South. A soundtrack LP was released on Decca Records UK and on Dot Records in the US. Both LPs have been long out of print and have not seen reissue in any format since their deletion. A DSD archived Decca LP in reasonably good condition was the source of this download and the original monaural sound has been improved using the extraction process which allows a more realistic perspective from typical 2 speaker/ headphone systems today. Daniele Amfitheatrof was a seriously neglected composer who worked for all of the major studios during Hollywood’s Golden Age and his score for SPANISH AFFAIR, although less than 30 minutes, is a delight and includes a lovely song, “The Flaming Rose”, sung by Carmen Sevila. Because of the short running time of this album the download files are in the superior CD quality wave format.

The LP used for the transfer was a Decca UK pressed LP (HA-D-2079). Non-classical releases (pop, soundtracks, Rolling Stones, Rock, etc) were put by Decca on the London label worldwide. Because Decca Records USA (now MCA) at the time was not part of the Decca Record Group UK, classical albums were also released in the USA on the London label until the 1990s when the companies merged. In the case of SPANISH AFFAIR, the soundtrack was on the Decca UK owned London label (HA-D-2079) in the UK & Europe/Asia except for the USA where it was released on the Paramount Pictures owned Dot & Seeco labels (DLP3078). By the way, there was no separate release of the soundtrack for the Spanish language version of the film "Aventura Para Dos", because the identical Amfitheatrof score was used except for the song "The Flaming Rose", which, of course, was sung in Spanish. The Spanish language version song was re-recorded by Carmen Sevilla and put out on a 45 EP (Philips 421.212) in Spain, which sometimes shows up for sale on Ebay. If anybody on this forum has a copy of it they would like to share, I would be most grateful.
