Welcome to Audioscrobbler
Audioscrobbler builds a profile of your musical taste using a plugin for your media player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..). Plugins send the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server, which updates your musical profile with the new song. Every person with a plugin has their own page on this site which shows their listening statistics. The system automatically matches you to people with a similar music taste, and generates personalised recommendations.

as I explained to cassandra earlier, I was on a "listen to bands everyone talks about that I have absolutely no experiences hearing" kick.

so if you were looking at my recent trax, keep that in mind ! I was curious, not in da loev w/ them.

I really don't even have a "all my music" playlist anymore so the only times I listen to stuff on my computer is when I'm using the interweb to check out new bands. I love the idea of the thing, and I really wish there was some way I could hook it up to my actual CD player, since that's where I do 95% of my listening, but as it stands it really would not create an accurate portrait of my taste in music at all. =\

you could play the CDs through your computer, and have some software auto-fetch the associated song data from one of the databases automatically. assuming your cd player is in the same room as your computer.

or you could look into digitizing your music collection (which would serve more of a purpose than just this- it'd make things easier to backup and more portable as well)

also, they have plugins for beep and rhythmbox, so I'll install at the weekend for sure. planning to rip a lot of my CDs that I lost since I fucked the PC over, too. yup.
