Though not exactly the kind of picture that one would choose as a spirit-raiser, Scott of the Antarctic is nonetheless
a moving and thoroughly captivating account of the ill-fated and tragic attempt by Captain Robert Falcon Scott to head the
first team to reach the South Pole. It's a story filled with human drama, not leas because Scott and his men fail in their quest
and pay for this failure with their lives. Indeed, there's so much potentially fascinating material here that it would be hard to
NOT make a decent film from it, but director Charles Frend and writers Mary Hayley Bell, Walter Meade and Ivor Montagu have
done far more than that. They have crafted a gripping, rending tale that demands the viewer's attention, even when it is
recounting the tediousness of parts of the journey. Indeed, so well have the creators done their job that it's hard to tear
one's eyes away from the screen at all. The writers have done an especially fine job with the dialogue, much of it taken
from Scott's actual journal, which manages to delineate character and maintain personality without falling into excessive
speechifying or archness. Scott is portrayed to a fare-thee-well by the tremendous John Mills, who work here is unimpeachable.
Gorgeous if bleak cinematography is an invaluable part of the film's success.

Ralph Vaughan Williams' music for the movie Scott of the Antarctic (1948) has manifested itself in its most familiar
form as the source for the composer's Symphony No. 7 "Sinfonia Antartica." The latter is arguably the most distinguished piece
of concert music derived from a film score this side of Prokofiev's two classics of the subgenre, Alexander Nevsky and Lieutenant
Kije. Interest in Vaughan Williams' music transcends the symphony, however, and the result was the 2002 premiere of the suite
Scott of the Antarctic edited by Stephen Hogger. The 41-minute suite is distinct from the symphony, containing as it does extensive
passages of music that have never been played before. Vaughan Williams began composing long before a script was finished and
most of his music was completed before a single frame of film had been shot. As with the composer's earlier feature film score
for The Loves of Joanna Godden (1946), it fell to the movie's music director, conductor Ernest Irving, to make the music fit the
finished film. In the end, less than half of what Vaughan Williams had written was used in the movie, and while some of the
excised material was retrieved in the symphony, this suite reveals a large, astoundingly impressive body of music that had been
waiting 55 years to be heard. While there are many passages and snippets of music that will be familiar to fans of the "Sinfonia
Antartica," even many of these are startlingly different in impact, heard in the musical setting for which they were conceived
rather than adapted. Once listeners get past the solo soprano part in the "Sculpture Scene," for example, which is one of the
most memorable elements of the symphony, there is a wonderfully dark and haunting instrumental section that is entirely new.
Similarly, "Ship's Departure" presents a wholly new, thoroughly authentic piece of Edwardian musical sentimentality intended
to accompany the departure of the doomed expedition. Most striking are the 16 minutes of music comprising the composer's
depiction of Scott's encounter with the glacier. Amid scattered elements that later turn up in the symphony are glorious
stretches of bolder music depicting struggle, the irresistible forces, hauntingly beautiful and forbidding landscapes of the
Antarctic, and descent into tragedy. The suite also restores the composer's intended tragic finale, which was altered in
keeping with the producers' wish to cast the movie's end in an optimistic tone.
